Am I misunderstanding something? The ball is to the right of him? He dives right yet puts his left arm across his body to reach the ball? Wouldnt he have more reach using his right arm that doesnt have to go across his body? Im going on what I can see in the pic thats all

He saved it thats pretty much all you need to know.

Yes he did and well done Smith but at the time I only had the picture to go on which I was I asked the question. I've now seen the video on page one and it doesn't look like the ball is going near the corner, probably between centre and the corner. Good save all the same and probably better than a save to the corner as it looks like Smith was going past the ball was at with his dive and so used his left hand to push it away when nearly past the ball. I think that makes it a better save as he is diving right and has to re-adjust and throw his left arm up to save.

It's the height that makes it such a good save. You very, very rarely see a penalty hit that high saved, particularly when it's not down the middle.

Fair enough, its unusual to see a penalty saved when the ball is that high which is what makes it so good.

Imagine diving to your right so that you are diving level with the ground. When you are level with the ground, your left arm is no longer on the left but UP while your right arm is no longer on the right but DOWN. If the ball went into the bottom right of the goal, a keeper would use their right arm. As it was above him and to the right, Smith made the only choice he could which was to use his left and pull off a spectacular save.

Interesting site and a good explanation rather than the ***** I had off everyone else for simply asking a question. Thank you

'Simply asking a question' is completely out of context. As someone who has continually been asking questions of the goalkeeper with a continued desire to demonstrate his failings (or flailings), why would anyone not see this question as intending to achieve the same when the save is absolutely, and demonstrably, beyond reproach or question?

Yes I agree. From the pic it wasnt clear but as I have already said, watching the video, it was probably a better save than a top corner save. He was committed to diving and its not always easy to change your movement when the ball isnt going where you are expecting it.

This is where you fall down. If you look at my posts since the game last night you will see I have praised Smith for his exploits last night on more than one occasion. I haven't criticized him at all.

As I stated at the time, I only had the pic to go by and it wasnt conclusive.

i hate all these people saying "oh i hope you get off his back now" all of you were probably on his back from the start

I don't see how anything I've written there falls down just because you've found it in your heart to not criticise the keeper following his performance that some are describing as the best goalkeeping display they've ever witnessed at a football game. That's very generous of you. With your ongoing campaign against the keeper in mind, the statement I made and question I've asked are entirely valid.

Not only did I not criticize him but I have actually praised him stating that he deserves the Man of the season award for his performance last night. Please do not confuse me with Wiggy. I will always give credit where credit is due to a player.

On what evidence? Widespread support for Smith and calls for people to get off his back have been fairly evident on SZ for the whole season - certainly before last night's game.

DWB,

Most games (emphasis on the word most) you do seem to go to great lengths to explain Smith's deficiencies and failings, with some really detailed commentary and observations about what keepers should be doing, where they should be standing, etc.

The fact that you even had to ask the question about the left hand/right side save kind of illustrates that your knowledge of goalkeeping isn't perhaps all that solid.
