You won't see many better than that! Glad he had a good game :)

Finally got around to watching FA cup highlights on ITV. Why oh why do I bother? We see Palace have a penalty saved, but all we get from our game is the goals and an oblique reference to Smith's goalkeeping. ITV are ****ing useless, always have been ****ing useless, and always will be!

My thoughts exactly.

Perhaps we ought to lobby for a DVD, as Smudge is doing himself... I'd love to see some of his saves again, they were really top drawer.

It's simple. The penalty save was up there with the best - well done. Overall he proved he is a good keeper. One of our better keepers over the years. But confidence is important and it's our job to make sure that we support our keeper come what may.
for a L2 side I believe Smudge will prove to be a very goofed signing indeed

I've got to say that for as much as Tuesday night made me proud to be a Southend fan, it's all quickly being un-done on this thread.

Why is it that some of our fans want to split hairs between good and great saves and go into specifics of ball trajectory and the like? At the end of the day Brentford had something like 29 shots on Tuesday night and we went home having lost 2-1. To the casual fan checking the paper the next day they'd think "ahh well that was close" which, if you were at the game, really wasn't the case.

Brentford absolutely battered us for most of the game, especially in the first half with 16 shots and 9 on target in the first period alone. Obviously their strikers could have done better with a few of their chances, and luck came into it but thats what goalkeeping is all about. As a keeper you're the last line of defence and have to pray the opposition don't hit that perfect shot and try your best to parry away into safety if given the chance. If Brentford had strikers that had put away every one of those chances then they'd be playing in the Champions League and not in a cup replay at home to Southend. Likewise for Smithy. It was a great performance but if he was pulling off Gordan Banks saves every week he wouldn't be with us.

I've said this before but there are, I believe, 3 types of player in League One/Two:

-Youngsters with good potential who could go on to a higher level
- League One/Two players who do a job for any club at that level but will unlikely play higher.
- Players who have played at a higher level but can no longer reach the consistency of their once great performances, usually due to age.

For me Smithy falls into the latter category. He's played for Nottingham Forest in their promotion year and for Middlesborough. For that reason there is clearly some ability there. The fact he's in League Two means he's probably not showing it consistently enough anymore. It is for this reason that Smithy divides our fans opinions so much because he's inconsistent. Take Darryl Flahavan who was a pretty consistent keeper. Flavs was a legend here but would never have been capable of playing higher than League One. He went to Palace, couldn't get past Speroni and has slowly worked his way back into the lower leagues.

With Smith I think you're gonna get some truly great games and some average ones as well and thats what will frustrate fans. But as I said, he's now a League Two keeper and the league is littered with players in a similar situation. But castrating him every time he makes a mistake and refusing to give praise when he does well is not gonna help the situation.

Support your team and back the players who play for it, FFS!!!

Ha! And you slated me for "tit for tat" red!!! Pot. Kettle!

To be honest Kay, I am sick to death of getting back red for no real reason other than I have given it to someone who's opinion I disagree strongly about. I have decided to join in with yours and others silly games. If you can't beat them, join them.

Moaning about rep?!

Pleased to see that Wiggy has remained in his box on this thread

Did somebody call?......for what it's worth Smith done exactly what we know he can, save shots. I am sure that he will be the same as always tomorrow, rooted to his line and frustrating the defense!

Why do I get the feeling the photographer works for the local rag and wanted to get those classic "just gone 1-0 down" face shots? His face after the save is priceless

Can't be bothered to read all the posts , so can someone just update me please.
Is Smith currently the worst goalie we've ever had or the best ? (*)

(*) I realise this may change by the time I get a reply.

He was temporarily the best, then his 'angles' problem became public knowledge. His left hand is currently in negotiations with Oprah Winfrey, and he remains rooted to his line whilst considering his future.

If the game is silly, be the bigger man and rise above it. Tit-for-tat rep says far more about the person doing it than the person receiving it. Do you want to be THAT person?

It's a dot on the internet! PERSPECTIVE!

You'll have to invest in BP I'm afraid. The save(which was indeed excellent)was in their highlights.

I stayed up for the FA Cup highlights too.A complete waste of time, as you say.

Cheers for that.
I don't want to appear foolish if I'm caught out on the wrong side of the debate.
