Promotion and relegation 2019/20 season

There is one thing that I cannot get my head around regarding Leagues 1 & 2 and the issue of relegation. I totally accept that we deserve to be relegated, but it has to fair. What I'm struggling to understand is that League 2 want to promote 3 teams, but rule out any relegation. It appears however that teams in League 1 won't escape relegation. How can it be a level playing field if you have one set of rules for one, and another set of rules for another. The idea of the teams bottom of League 1 being relegated, but the team bottom of League 2 not going down isn't right. It should be the same across the board.

The difference being that the conference is null and void ie no promotion to the football league, hence league 2 have agreed no relegation. League 1 is still active therefore teams will want to gain promotion from league 2. If that happens then places will need to be filled in league 2.

In short, the whole thing is a complete mess and the EFL are not following their own mandate. Either way, after the resolution of this season, a lot of rule changes will take place to make sure all eventualities are covered.

That’s exactly it the NL voided so the season never happened. However one team may come up to replace BUry i guess

League Two want promotion but no relegation.
Really? Imagine League One relegating three but allowing Stevenage to stay in the Football League.
It's getting complicated...

I think we should adopt the league 2 position - promotion but no relegation.

for the method of deciding promotion - (ppg, play offs, whatever) we vote for/with the clubs that vote for no relegation.

so if a club wants points per game system so they get promoted we vote for them IF they vote against relegation .... etc etc

I bet this going on all day everyday at the moment

So looks like the EFL have confirmed that their next board meeting will take place this Wednesday (20th) and only during this meeting are the EFL are set to put forward the different scenarios to all L1 sides for a potential vote will take place Friday.

Apparently because of all the threats from teams including those outside the playoff places, and the lack of agreement about how to end the season (which PPG to use, some moaning about Rotherham being very catchable in second and that only Coventry should be automatic, some demanding extended playoffs down to 10th place etc etc) those teams are starting to come together around completing the season as the only way forward...

Absolute chaos...needs apparently a simple majority to decide probably between play on or EFL version of PPG.

Don't discount a vote to carry on even though that will turn out to be virtually impossible..

Just to add a little more confusion. A day before League 2 agreed to end their season, the National League bosses said they were waiting on them to make a decision so they could decide on promotion/relegation in their league. This was a surprise because as you said, the NL was null and void. So, if their season was over, why were still discussing possible promotion/relegation?

FORMER Southend United boss Barry Fry believes League One clubs will not be asked to vote on any further scenarios until after an EFL board meeting scheduled for Wednesday.

Because if L2 relegate then that impacts what they do, as in they would need to send someone up

As yet the FA and EFL have not confirmed if they will agree to the voted proposal. The FA would prefer both promotion ad relegation from all divisions they have stated this Previously.

WIll be interesting, I also not the Scots have just needed their league as well with Celtic being champions, the Scottish cup is likely to be concluded by playing the games

A simple majority is quite easily to get with an odd number of teams involved in the division, it will be an interesting week for the 3 English divisions left, my feeling is nothing much will be decided for two of the divisions this week

I am not at all sure the National League has been confirmed as null and void (I know the term was been bandied around in some newspapers but that never made it so). They actually voted to end the season (no mention of null and void) with immediate effect but the rest was absolutely left open until the EFL position was finalised? So they could easily end up deciding by PPG with promotions.

I fear you may be right but the utter chaos and disarray to date means I would not be surprised if some time next week L1 votes to play on the basis that the majority can not be obtained for anything else. The consequences of that are difficult to imagine..

So if the 3 choices are as suggested
1. Season restarts behind closed doors
2. End early via PPG with 1,2 up and 3-6 play offs
3. End early via PPG with 1,2 up and extended play offs

Then none of these will get the 50%+ of votes. So will they have a first vote, then remove the option with lowest votes and have a choice of two?

No mention re relegations - although there appears to be a sentiment that Tranmere don't "deserve" to get relegated.

In a world where the competition rules no longer matter I assume absolutely any outcome is possible- especially when the EFL themselves have specifically ignored their own rule book.

I do not disagree, i will know more in someways later today. If they require a very simple majority to go one way or the other then it could be cased close dbut i Sisyphean a simple majority is say 2 or 3 rather than just 1, if any of that makes sense

So with lockdown measures now being slightly relaxed, it is not inconceivable that there may be a small spike in Covid infections.

With the time lag between being infected and symptoms showing being up to 2 weeks, I guess we will see if this has been an issue in about 4-5 weeks time, which puts us at the beginning of July.

All it needs is for 1 player to be tested positive and the whole squad goes into quarantine, probably also with any players from opposing teams that he has played against in the previous fortnight.

Although the players themselves are unlikely to suffer major effects, it's about their families, friends and anyone who has been into contact. The difference with this virus is the infection rate.

I honestly cannot see the season being completed.

I have to say that I think I’ve read all of them and there are more than a few interesting observations but nothing that seriously challenges/rivals my original proposition.
As it was back then,March 24th,it is still abundantly clear that meaningful football is not going to happen this season.
Games behind closed doors, neutral grounds—forget it! And the same goes for RELEGATION and most laughable of all PLAY-OFFS !
BUT I repeat : those teams who have played well enough to occupy a clear ascendancy at the very top of their leagues must be rewarded.I would now narrow my original list down slightly to just these 7 CLEAR leaders:-
Liverpool
Leeds and WBA
Coventry
Crewe and Swindon
Barrow

This gives us a perfectly manageable set-up for the new season 2020/21 (which we can hope will start in August):
Prem. 22 clubs
Champ 23
Lg 1. 24
Lg 2. 23
It wouldn’t be at all difficult to revert to 20/24/24/24 for the 2021/22 season if required.
