Promotion and relegation 2019/20 season

there has been no mention of geographical splits in meetings i have been at, some clubs would strongly object. Sunderland in league 1 are a massive source of income for some clubs, while it is only one team they bring 2-3000 fans with them, Pompey also naming a large following. Teams would not want to miss out on those

Assuming that when grounds re-open to spectators, away fans aren't hit with big reductions in numbers allowed into an away end?.

SIX League One clubs have collectively voiced their opposition to ending the season after Rochdale chief executive David Bottomley said the campaign had to be stopped now and decided on a points-per-game basis.

There probably will be, but if either of those teams bring a third of what they usually bring it would still be a lot more than some other teams would bring in normal situations, and remember every other team will be restricted as well

Seems about right- your additional insight is alway interesting.

Individual divisions making different decisions opens up yet another route for the legals- if L1 finished and L2 didn't replacing a team in L1 who finished the season with one that didn't in L2 is yet another argument- already in Prem clubs like Norwich are saying no way could they be replaced by a club from Championship who didn't complete the season. After all the EFL's own competition rules say you can only be promoted at the end of the season when the last fixture has been completed..
If thats what the league rules state and seasonisnt finished then there can be no promotion or relegation, seems straight forward to me .

They’ve got Rotherham chairman on BBC News this morning. Have I got this right that they’re making a decision on what to do today?

Meeting starts at 09:30. EFL will defer to the clubs to vote imo. Everyone will vote for self interest, and Southend will be in a minority position.

That’s the hope, but i reckon its 50/50 if they do or not. Apart from the 6 who came out public ally yesterday there are 2 others who would lie to finish the season, there are a couple ion the fence too. Believe it has to be a 75/25 split so of the resolution is to cancel the season the need all but 6 clubs to vote that way otherwise it carries on

It’s obvious clubs that it benefits will vote PPG and clubs that null and void will benefit vote for that like ours.

The agenda

1. Chairman Update
2. Season 19/20 Matters
3. SCMP Update
4. Other Financial Matters
5. Any other matters Clubs wish to raise

So I would suggest zero chance of any decisions or real progress. Can already airborne in a down the road direction I suspect..

Anyone see Darragh McAnthony on The Football Show on Sky today, spoke (as always) passionately and with sense over the situation. He said they do not know how many votes anyone needs to carry a majority, that they have yet to be told what the costs would be if they had to repay TV money etc. He estimates not playing and paying back will be circa 800k but playing the games would limit those loses to around 300-400k and would mean no redundancies, they have not been told when the solidarity payments will be made, that Rick Parry stated to all clubs football season would continue and still maintains that.

He then had to leave to join the L1 meeting

It's ridiculous, everyone will vote for self interest, with perhaps the exception of those with nothing to lose (or win).

Those in the automatics and just outside the relegation zone who could still go down will vote to finish now and decide promotion and relegation on PPG.

Those in the playoffs with a chance to go up will vote to play on

Those in the relegation zone will vote to void the season with no promotion and relegation

Those who could go up through applying the weighted home and away PPG formula will vote that that's the fairest way to decide things.

AND ALL OF THEM WILL SAY THEIR VIEW IS IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE GAME OR IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST!

And given the majority of clubs and the EFL know carrying on is impossible it will just be a talking shop with no decisions as suggested by the agenda I think.

The EFL will at some point have to accept that there will be likely never a 75/25 majority for anything as all votes are driven by self interest. And a majority retrospectively changing the rules to penalise a small minority is legally fraught with danger.

The clubs through their behaviour are making voiding all but certain.. even the EFL must understand this

Don’t forget there is no single PPG- there at least two that will suit or not suit one club or another- so that vote is split

It blindingly obvious the right thing is to simply follow the competition rules as already written- the decision is then is binary- void/curtail or complete.

If the clubs vote void/curtail the only action upset clubs could have would be that the season was cancelled wrongly/ prematurely but their case would be weak given the background both medical and financial. The EFLs case is strong if they are upholding the competition rules.

In that case Bolton shouldn't have been relegated last season since their match against Brentford never happened (Brentford were awarded a 1-0 win to get around the rule).

Problem as always is all present their own version of the facts. He is attempting to suggest completing the season will halve losses.. yet a number of clubs are suggesting restarting will send them under. The idea that playing on behind closed doors, with all the testing and other costs, players off furlough, contract issues will cost less is, shall we say, somewhat “suspect” and self serving.. one mans sense is another’s madness..

Well it goes to two points- first it shows there has to be a result in order to register as completed, second if the fudge does not affect anyone negatively it’s a pretty safe solution as who would be the injured party.

I suspect awarding a result to all remaining games, say 1-0, 0-1 or 0-0 might not work so well/be quite so victimless

Sometimes there are more important issues than where will my football club finish in a league.
For safety sake, no more risks need to be taken.
PPG will never be acceptable to all, there always seems to be at least one club that has a good run in, and those just outside the current playoff spots will protest.
I know it massively suits us, but for safety sake Voiding the season is the sensible thing IMO.

Ps: I’ve had this virus and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.
