Promotion and relegation 2019/20 season

Predictably the lawyers are now getting hold of this and the idea somehow there can be promotions and relegations based on some arbitrary retrospective basis not covered by the competition rules.

James Severn, an expert on sports law and partner at Penningtons Manches Cooper, has told Sportsmail: "League One is really interesting with only three points between second and eighth.
"Any club missing out in such a scenario may consider a claim in damages or seek an injunction prohibiting the League from taking a decision to promote or relegate clubs."

Of course they can - because the competition rules say clearly no promotions and relegations until the end of the season which is specifically defined as the completion of the final fixture.

So the EFL’s whole approach must either be on the basis they don’t understand their own rules or they are hoping that clubs will just accept the view of the majority and no EFL club across the three divisions will take this anywhere near a judge..
i could be wrong but I also believe that is the legal company that are also advising a prominent league one club to push for a solution that assists them

complete mess, glad i have today off and not working lol

I would assume that the EFL are seeking agreement to vary the rules during this season due to extenuating circumstances, if they don't then surely the season has to be voided without the competition being completed - therefore no promotions or relegations.

I can see the merits of them agreeing a system for how the league should be decided should such things happen again, but not to apply them during the current season.

They would be better spending their time coming up with plans for how to organise the next season given a proportion of it is likely to have to be played behind closed doors. If there is to be no promotion or relegation then they could even come up with a provisional fixture list to allow for a staggering of games for TV purposes.

very ambiguous too, it's not stating it can start then, more that it can't start before then - I am not deliberately being contrary - just has a huge effect on what I do works wise and thought something additional had been said. Thanks guys

Nope agree ambiguous, just top level could start behind closed doors 1st June.

Government has stated top level sport could restart behind closed doors form the 1st of June

Well actually they said:

No professional sport, even behind closed doors, will be staged in England until 1 June at the earliest

So dependent on the filter you are looking through this will be: great we could start playing from June 1 (let's call them the fantasists) or alternatively it will be no sooner than June at the very earliest, if all goes perfectly, and with exactly all the same restrictions as before (in other words to the realists to coin a phrase "nothing has changed") :-)

The danger is that, although nothing has changed, it will be latched upon as another reason to dither and delay, with all the associated damage, whilst not having any meaningful effect on the inevitable outcome.

Spot on Mr Kent, was hopping that the Government would force the powers to make a decision.,but regrettably not.Can see this dragging on for longer than it needs to be.

ROTHERHAM United chairman Tony Stewart expects a decision to be made on the fate of the League One and League Two seasons by Thursday and would be "amazed" if they are not cancelled.

And don't forget we have a wonderful new concept to juggle with- after the FA to the Prem they could void the season the option of "curtailing" it has appeared for the first time in their deliberations...no explanation of what the difference is.

As it stands, we have nine games left - and only one midweek, which would have been Easter Monday at Rochdale.
Therefore, the longer the dithering the better the chance of a null and void season.

Anything past a June 6 restart leaves only seven weeks before the end of July with everyone agreeing it ain't gonna go beyond then - not enough unless teams are forced to play two a week.
One can see a raft of objections to that.

The EFL would face another thud of legal papers hitting their desk if they insisted on PPG.
In theory, 2020-21 would be delayed while those legal objections took hold.

Am slowly, slowly I should emphasise, thinking we will avoid the drop.

The plan was to play them in a 56 day period if the season was to restart, not sure of that included the playoffs. But a lot has changed since that was first suggested a month or more ago

I'd guess curtailing is bringing the season to an end but keeping the matches, appearances, goals scored etc on record. The matches happened and I think this is preferable to pretending they didn't happen. Doesn't in itself solve any of the pertinent outstanding issues though.

Looks like dither and delay is still alive a kicking. I had thought tomorrow/Thurs there would be a decision on L1/L2.

Looks like there is an EFL board meeting tomorrow, Parry meeting Gov Thurs, and L2 at least have meeting scheduled with EFL board now noon Friday to discuss season/ get update (no mention of firm decision or a vote). Seems the EFL are desperate not to make decisions and keep kicking the can down the road.

Even if they make decision say next week now on the season, that wont be the means of ending it which will follow after that..
