Sorry for the positive thought ( and I know it’s strictly verboten) but having seen the way we have galvanised the u23 to compete at L1 level with some shrewd signings I think we could surprise.
I think that we will do a lot better if we was to stay in league 1 next season if we start of with the players that we finished with.Yes but it does raise the question as to how the hell we're going to survive in L1 again next season?
If they do scrap relegation Boltons 12 point penalty would have been a waste of time.
Not so sure about that. If they are awarding promotion then the season has been played and thus the penalty would have been served. If they void the season then quite possibly that would have happened.I would imagine Bolton would have to start on -12pts again next season if and when this one is scrapped. Still they'd be in a better place to survive now if that is indeed the case....
Sunderland have to be in with a chance of failing FFPfor those worried that we'd just go down next season we also need to bear in mind that the other clubs in the division will need to do a similar sort of mass clearout as we did in January to keep their heads above water, there will be some big clubs that are going to struggle with no income for several months, suddenly Will Grigg on 15K a week seems a bit of a bad idea.
the next transfer window will shift the power to the clubs with players becoming increasingly desperate to remain as professional footballers

Yep£3m for him was just ludicrous in the first place!

We may not be chasing promotion, but equally will not be facing relegation.
Those u 23,s showed a lot of heart and wanted to play well for the club, they had the opportunity to play in a league that they would not normally have played in as yet, and they all took the bull by the horns and ran with it.
I was very impressed by the make shift team that we assembled at the end of the season, compared to the team we had in the first part of the season.
Certainly the U23's put in some great performances under Sol.Results however didn't really improve under his management.
I fear for our future if its in L1 next season, unless the Chairman's chequebook comes out in the summer and Sol gets at least one window to bring in the players he wants. That's s assuming that he doesn't walk anyway,of course.
There are two fundamental differences between our ability to make changes for next season versus last summer.
Firstly, many of our high earners in contract last summer are no longer in contract having been moved on in January. A few more will be gone in June. That gives us significantly more scope to build a much better balanced squad.
Secondly, as alluded to on this thread, other clubs will have many more challenges than before. Some will have lots of their squad in contract still and may have very little room to manoeuvre. Our clearout in January may well position us better than half of the teams in this division going into whenever we restart again.
He didn't spend in January because he felt we were already down and it'd be wiser spent in the summer rebuild. Many disagreed at the time but RM has got lucky with that call.It seems to me you're ignoring our Chairman's legendary reluctance to spend money at the appropriate time. His well documented refusual to spend the fundshe''d previously promised in the January window (combined with our results in December/January against the teams around us in the table) cost us any realistic chance we had of avoiding the drop by our own efforts.

He clearly is willing to spend decent money on the playing budget. So many of the wasters in the past 2 years have been on very good money and that's been much of the problem. That problem has now gone.
