Promotion and relegation 2019/20 season

I was trying to figure out the 6 furloughed players based on the comment our high or highest earners. That would mean Oxley, Demetriou, Hyam, Milligan, Macca and eithe ManTom or Shaugnessy i guess. Not included Dieng as he signed a contract extension so presumably staying.

Not sure how many of those 6 are contracted next season (maybe Oxley?), how many would we want to keep, I do have a soft spot for Macca but now is the time to do what is right for th team and the club

Did anyone see the news from Col u yesterday....seems like the first signs of what will happen in the EFL. Cowling has acted early and announced due to the financial chaos at the moment 4 players who'd would have had new contracts offered and now being told they can go......one being Luke Prosser and also Frank (I can miss from an inch at Charlton) Nouble. Who would have thought our own financial clear out due to a disastrous season might actually work in our favour.

A not overly subtle (and nor should it be) reminder to the numpties at the EFL/PFA that at the end of June 1400 L1/L2 players are out of contract and most (certainly higher earners) will be unemployed unless they wake up.

Actually you would have thought 11 candidates as more senior pros (see below)
I suspect those 5 with contracts for next season (Oxley, Demetriou, Lennon, Ralph, Dieng) will have agreed and maybe one of others (on the basis we have offered a new contract that is all but done).

Those not furloughed are probably those who know they are going or who we are in negotiation with and who may or may not go. I would like us to keep White, Milligan, McLaughlin & O'Shaunessy but that will in part depend on what division we are in and £££. My guess is McLaughlin is the other one furloughed as I think Sol rates him and he will stay whether we are L1/L2 and probably he is not on anything prohibitive.

Mark Oxley - 2021
Jason Demetriou - 2021 (option until 2022)
Joe Shaughnessy - 2020 (option until 2021)
Harry Lennon - 2021
Nathan Ralph - 2021 (option until 2022)
John White - 2020 (option until 2021)
Mark Milligan 2020 (option until 2021)
Stephen McLaughlin - 2020
Sam Mantom - 2020 (option until 2021)
Timothee Dieng - 2021 (option taken)
Luke Hyam - 2020 (option until 2021)

Interesting to see where the official scientific advise is leading in Scotland re football- hard to see it being any different in England (that said Scotland seems to be getting increasingly unwilling to wait for UK decisions and so is moving first in various areas).

As this sorry season limps on because nobody is prepared to put it out of its misery, the latest is that the PFA are going to take a vote from 800 players whose contracts expire at the end of June to see if they will be prepared to also play in July for no extra wages (just the one months severance pay that they are entitled to if they haven't signed for somebody else).

Apparently if a significant number (as expected) say they won't play then the EFL has the problem that weakened sides will be fielded so making the whole thing a bit of a farce.

Irrespective of promotion and relegation issues, they really should just end it now and make plans for a restart in September when hopefully things will have died down a bit.

England Athletics have postponed all competition until at least the 1st July. With all other sports cancelling left right and centre I fail to see how football thinks it will be back in a few weeks....

McLaughlin have stepped up this year, guiding our kids and showing examples, like our performance against Bristol Rovers which is an real statement of what they can do on the pitch.

The reality is that everyone is waiting on official government guidance, it's fine and logical to plan for eventualities but it's all moot until the government decrees what's allowed

Just a thought.
But I'm willing to bet Boris is better focused on safety than he otherwise might have been.
He was cavalier about 'herd' immunity - and ended up in an ICU.
Can't see a return any earlier than beginning of June, and how fair would it be then?
Finish one season in whatever format, and start another immediately?
Not feasible, surely, and I don't just mean players out there for 11 months non-stop.

One option being spoken about is delaying the start of next season till mid to late September if needed, its a discussion and a very early stage. It isn’t a very popular option from what i have heard

What happens if one of the players contracts Covid, will all the rest of the team and staff have to self-isolate knowing that they might be infected? And the opposition? Two teams out for a week or two or can they still play if tested negative?

The whole premise is based on football being a very special case, very special, and hence things like social distancing and other rules don't apply. But fantasy will collide with reality- I suspect we are in the end game over the next couple of weeks and then focus will be on next season and what that looks like. All that waiting for a clear Gov statement does is consign the football world to more dither and delay. The season will end simply because it can't restart because the rules don't change..

I agree with the above. All the signs are that this season will not resume and next season will probably start much later in the year, if not next year. How can the authorities even begin to think that life will return to anything like normality in the foreseeable.

...... not the words I'd have chosen. :Winking:

The absolute stark reality is that for clubs at our level, this season is finished. It is not financially viable to pay players and play behind closed doors. That is the death knell for many clubs in the EFL.

The other reality is that we are probably looking at social distancing being in place will into the autumn and potentially until a vaccine is introduced (which may be in a year's time).

This leads me to believe that next season is also a non-starter.

Football, and sport in general, really need to get their heads around this possibility and work out how our clubs will be able to restart at the appropriate time.

I think it’s ridiculous they’re even considering restarting or continuing this season. There will be a massive knock on affect! They just need to cancel it and get everything in preparation to start next season. Gives players a chance to rest/recover and have a pre season in preparation for next season.

Look at the scum and the fact they’ve released a load of their players. It’s unfair on them to continue this season having had to do that.

Come on FA/PFA/EFL/EPL whoever is involved just end it and concentrate on getting the correct guidelines in place for next season! So our players/staff and hopefully fans can enjoy the great game in the Safest way possible.

This is a dogs dinner and the best thing would be for the FA to call the season off.
There are some very good points made above as to why this should happen but, there is no getting away from the fact that this team should be relegated.
Some of the players are not good enough and have let the fans down massively.
Whatever happens I hope for a complete clear out.

Agree 100%, how they do that needs to be sorted asap.

in relation to the prem, the idea as i have heard is to put all players, staff, officials and whoever up in hotels and they do not leave them, thus they are not coming into contact with anyone else (for me i see a flaw as in hotel staff but lets put that aside for now). They will use a limited number of grounds so games likely to be at neutral venues (St George’s park has even been mentioned) and behind closed doors. Please tell me I am not the only one that sees that this isnt possible.

As for hotel staff do they also then get tested prior? And then fall under the tests being carried out twice weekly to ensure everyone is safe, should point out that apparently the EPL will play for and source the tests themselves and not burden the government or health service with this.

That in itself begs the questions of they can get 20,000 to 30,000 testing kits just like that why cant the governments around thee world do so
