Promotion and relegation 2019/20 season

French football season 2019/20 has just been cancelled by the government, the first in Europe? No football until September. How they decide how to deal with the cancelled season should be interesting.

So the French have been forced to make a decision brought about by the government. It seems to me that FA PL and EFL will keep pushing the can down the road until their hand is forced. So come on Boris

Social distancing policy is the key, many of the general public, probably most of them, would be annoyed if social distancing did not apply to 22 players plus 3 officials but the rest of society had to toe the line.

Well I wouldn't be. If there was a strict and verifiable regime of testing (which was not distracting from needs elsewhere) which indicated that none of the participants (36 players, 4 officials, trainers and managers - plus a few ballboys) was carrying the infection then social distancing for these people would serve no purpose. We social distance because we don't know the status of those we are distancing from nor do they know ours.

Haven’t the government asked the EPL to start thinking about putting game son to lift the nation or something?

For the Bundesliga (and I prefer them as a source as the Germans patently know what their doing and honesty doesn't yet appear to have become alien to them) each game would involve about 300 people incl television staff . And it would take 20,000 tests to support the completion of their season.

Now also for the Prem they are also talking about specific allocated team hotels being put aside so teams can isolate thru the remainder of games (home teams one half, visiting teams taking the other half).

The EFL would obviously not need 300 people but people want the games televised and its fair to say many of the same people will be there so lets say 100-150 (don't forget in both cases there is no crowd so attendance is not a factor).

Each league in the Prem/EFL will need the same number of tests to complete their seasons as the Germans BL.

I think we can forget about EFL teams being able to afford to do on isolation what the Prem is planning. And if the Prem needs to do it how can the EFL not?

It is getting almost boring now the predictability of reality butting up against fantasy.

Personally I don't think even if the costs weren't crippling there is a hope of the EFL completing- I think the game plan is to stick together, desperately hope the Prem can complete (maybe at some significant reputational cost), protect the TV moneys, with the carrot that then the EFL will release the Prem money to the EFL teams with more money from the Prem to come if they preserve their income (wouldn't be surprised if Prem are saying to EFL we can only afford to help if our income is protected so keep on message).

No not the first, Belgium leagues did so but no we having second thoughts, and the Dutch did so last weekend
Yes I had that in my mind when typing that post. I think maybe that decision was taken independently by the dutch football authority whereas France is the first in Europe for the government (surely in consultation the football leagues) to cancel the season? Apparently the leagues are going to meet in May to sort out league positions, promotion, relegation and no doubt, qualification for Europe. Seeing how disciplined the french normally are, that shouldn't prove any problem then! :Hilarious:

Just 20,000? The number the Germans can achieve in about an hour!!!

Number of leagues gone or all but gone are going in only one direction- in tonight’s news the Chief Medical Officer at FIFA has said forget this season it can’t finish- start planning for next.

If they are waiting for the Gov to give clarity it will be death by a thousand cuts- more dither and delay. Not only are we two weeks behind other EU countries our situation is as bad or worse.

To use a familiar quote “nothing has changed”

Sorry @Mick, I don't see how that could work in reality.

Did anyone see the news from Col u yesterday....seems like the first signs of what will happen in the EFL. Cowling has acted early and announced due to the financial chaos at the moment 4 players who'd would have had new contracts offered and now being told they can go......one being Luke Prosser and also Frank (I can miss from an inch at Charlton) Nouble. Who would have thought our own financial clear out due to a disastrous season might actually work in our favour.
