Penalties

Thank you. Do these include penalty shoot-outs and if so do you have the figures for just "real" penalties. What competitions are included ? If the keeper saves it and the taker buries the rebound, is that a score or a miss ? Curious, where did you get the records of missed penalties for, say, early 50s.
The stats do include shoot-outs, The figures for "real" penalties are below.

If a keeper saves the penalty, it goes down as a miss (penalty save) even if the rebound is scored.

The info comes from going through the original match reports published in the Southend Standard. If you go to the library (Forum), you can now download pages from the microfilm copies of the newspapers onto your own memory stick.

Announce Dave Cusack

Indeed it is and it started after ANG snatched the ball from Demi up at Scunthorpe….. Those that said he scored so it doesn’t matter don’t know anything about taking pens.
I personally don't see the relevance, given the change of management and players since then, not to mention that ANG scored. I'm not sure whether Demi was number one anyway despite having a very good record, and he'd missed his previous one.

Funnily enough, however, I realised something very similar had actually happened to me back in 1988 when I lived in Peterborough. It was at under 11s level and I was the designated penalty taker but just I as gathered the ball our manager told me to give it to his son. His son missed and as you can guess I was a more than a bit miffed.

But two decades later, when ANG pinched the ball from Demi, he scored. Were his team-mates angry with him? No, they rushed to celebrate with him. I'm not suggesting that I approved of this but the fact is he scored. Simple as that.

The other thing is, this sort of thing happens regularly so it wasn't unique to us. Richarlison, then of Everton, pinched the ball from his team-mate because he wanted a hat-trick. Can't remember whether it worked or not. Jordan Henderson did the same for England in a friendly and it was saved.

Thing is, what constitutes a good penalty anyway? Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi don't have particularly great records from the spot despite being world class players and the Netherlands have a very poor record in penalty shoot-outs despite having some extremely gifted footballers.

If the keeper guessed right on every penalty, how far would the percentage of successful penalties drop? Like several others on here, I was designated as first choice for three separate teams and my overall record was something like 12 out of 15. However, of the successful penalties, three sent keepers the wrong way but weren't actually struck that well. Had they guessed right, they'd probably have saved them.

Two other examples: Stuart Pearce's second penalty against Germany in Euro 96 would have been saved had the keeper guessed right (his words, not mine!) yet Barry Davies described it as being brilliant; and our own Freddy against Northampton in the play-off semi looked cool but would have been gobbled it up had he guessed right. He took an almost identical penalty several years later and it was awful because the keeper guessed right.

The cliche is that penalties are a lottery, especially in shoot-outs, but maybe it's truer than one might think.

Thank you again. A more meaningful table of things that are actually part of the matches.
You didn't answer the bit about which competitions although I'd guess League, FA Cup, League Cup, League Trophy in its various guises and Anglo- Italian ?

Mick, yes indeed you are correct. All games deemed as first class, which does include the Anglo-Italian Cup (one penalty from Mike Marsh).

Eddie Firmani was often seen at the Pier bowling alley when ten pin bowling was all the rage in the 1960's.
And possibly the only Blues’ player to get name checked in an internationally acclaimed film. He was mentioned in “Buster” when Buster Edwards found out that Charlton had drawn 2-2 and was told Firmani had scored both goals. Not a lot of people know that 😜
