Penalties

You have to look over a reasonable period and its still 9 out of 11. And before those two misses after he was the regular penalty taker it was 9 from 9.

If you can't take penalties just because you miss a couple then that rules out Powell who has missed his last two and the only other available player who has scored for us from the spot in a competitive game is Clifford with 1.

So then its looking at the records of new signings that are are available to play? That I haven't looked at admittedly.

Penalties are something I would look much more at recent form for. It’s like a boxer before and after they’ve been knocked out for the first time.

Chris Wreh looks like he should be a good penalty taker. I don’t suppose anyone knows his record from the spot?

Let’s attempt a thread to chronicle our fortunes from the penalty spot.

From memory aided with a quick google search the last few years it’s been:

2020-21

Humphrys v W*** H** Mickey Mouse Cup ❌
Demetriou v Exeter (H) ✅
Olayinka v Boreham Wood (A) FA Cup pen shoot out ✅
Rush v Boreham Wood (A) FA Cup pen shoot out ❌

Nathaniel-George Boreham Wood (A) FA Cup pen shoot out ✅
Demetriou Boreham Wood (A) FA Cup pen shoot out ❌
Nathaniel-George v Scunthorpe (A) ✅
Akinola v Carlisle (H) ❌
Rush v Newport (H) ❌

2021-22

Murphy v Dover (H) ✅
Dalby v Chesterfield (A) FA Cup ❌
Murphy v Dorking (H) FA Trophy ❌
Dalby v Kings Lynn (H) ✅
Dalby v Chesterfield (A) ✅
Dalby v Grimsby (H) ✅
Dalby v Notts Co (H) ❌
Cardwell v Barnet (A) ✅
Demetriou v Wealdstone (H) ❌
Powell v Weymouth (H) ❌

2022-23

Powell ❌

If I’ve missed any (pun not intended) add them below.

And if any one has records further back that would be great as well.

From the current squad we have two with 100% records both surnames start with C and are injured so maybe from this extensive and scientific survey it should be Jaden Crowhurst on spot kick duty (I’d have had Wreh on penalty duties).
Wow u really do have to much time on your hands lol good work.

Most recently I guess you will want. At Banbury Stevens was the normal penalty taker- Wreh did take one...he missed...

So, overall in the last decade, including shoot-outs, we’ve taken 97 penalties, scoring 66 (just over two-thirds) with 31 unsuccessful.

Of the regular penalty-takers (8+ penalties) in that time, Demetriou’s 9/11 is by far the best success-rate. Cox scored 5/8 and Corr 6/10.
Eight out of eight for Demetriou here—another reason to welcome him back in the team for Saturday.

I think Demi is the start point 9/11 (and a run of 9/9). Then you say who do we have that is better and playing/not injured. Thats the challenge...

Amazing stuff but Graham Bressington’s stat makes me sad.

I’ve never heard of Frank Burns.

 It's really interesting, I don't remember Clohessy taking them for us!

Think Mike Marsh was probably the best penalty taker I can remember. Probably helped that he didn’t feel pressure playing for Southend.

I can remember Mike Marsh scoring a pen against Port Vale on a cold Tuesday evening in ‘95…. My first game.

For that reason alone, Marsh will always be one of my favourite penalty takers.

Talking Yesterday with a mate I played a lot of local football with. I Reckon i must have a similar penalty record as Alan Moody.

I definitely missed 4. Two during a match and two in shootouts. Including having the 5th one saved in a final at Eastwood bury lane. It was to win the game. My embarrassment was rescued when another poster on here scored our 7th to win the cup…… Funny thing is i had scored our goal during the 90 and he had scored their goal with an Oggy….. I still felt bad in the bar after. Back then i would have died if we had lost😎

I was going to mention Dave Cusack. I loved the way he took penalties. Adam Barrett and Cian Bolger did pretty much the same thing at Wembley. The difference was the Dave Cusack hit the ball twice as hard...or so it seemed. I feared for any goalkeeper that got in the way, it would have left them out injured for the rest of the season.

However, I distinctly remember seeing him miss a penalty when he didn't hit it as hard as he could, and tried to place it. I was sitting in the East Blacks (except they were benches and not black then!) and he missed in front of the South bank (before the flats and stand were built). He tried to place it to the goalkeeper's right and put it wide. However, the ref said the 'keeper moved so it had to be re-taken. This time DC reverted to type and smashed it. This time the 'keeper really didn't move, the ball was too quick for him!

Thank you. Do these include penalty shoot-outs and if so do you have the figures for just "real" penalties. What competitions are included ? If the keeper saves it and the taker buries the rebound, is that a score or a miss ? Curious, where did you get the records of missed penalties for, say, early 50s.

I don't know about the stats, but when a penalty taker scores from the rebound they're usually considered goals from open play.
