I also think that RM does not sack managers lightly, it took 2 relegations before he sacked tilly. He has also backed PS when it came to replacing the injured players, e.g. Reeves in for Tomlin, Lavery and Mayor both in and Lund in for Timlin, so Ron has given the support to PS.
I worry about Phil Brown being mentioned as I feel there is better out there and Ron would have been better off sticking with Sturrock.

Watched 2 out of the last 3 home games.
Before I hear any of our players bemoan the sacking , I hope they are man enough to look at themselves first.
Not saying it was all about those last 3 games , but if we had won all 3 , I'm sure this sacking would not have happened now.
I'm not having a go at the fact we picked up one point from 9 ( although that is reason enough ) , but at the totally 'gutless' displays of several players.
So as you wave Luggy off with a tear in your eye , think hard about your own efforts in recent weeks.

I for one am delighted that Ron has made the brave decision to get rid of PS.
As Ron said he had been backed with players and was not delivering on his promises.
I now feel with a new man at the helm we can still make a run for the paly offs. I never felt this could happen under PS.
I do not agree however that PS should lead us out at Wembley, this does not seem possible to me.
I don't think it will work and also feel he himself would not want to do it.

Your thread title suggested three questions but you didn't go on to talk about the new manager, so I'll suggest the following. For me, there are 4 crucial calls that Ron Martin is making:

1) The decision to part company with Sturrock
2) The timing of the decision
3) The appointment of Phil Brown (if that's what is happening)
4) Sturrock leading the team out at Wembley

I'll set my stall out by saying I'm a huge fan of Paul Sturrock as a man and a manager. I'll also say I don't have a great deal of kind words for Ron Martin - I occasionally respect him and what he is trying to do but think he has fatal flaws in his stewardship of this club.

With that said, I think he has at least 3 of the calls above correct, and maybe even all four.

1) The decision to part company with Sturrock
Paul has done amazingly well and I argued the case only a couple of days ago for the injuries being a crucial blow to our campaign and an almost acceptable excuse for this season's failure. I also however accept the views of the many others who have seen us fail to push on from last year and who feel a change is needed. While I still have a lot of time for Paul Sturrock and what he has done for this club, it has been getting harder and harder to argue a case for keeping him at the expense of not letting someone else come in to pick up the reigns. We're certainly not out of the mix yet and a fresh impetus may be just what's required right now.

2) The timing of the decision
If the decision is to be made, it HAS to be now and Wembley can't be a factor in our thinking behind the timing. Not only are we, right now, deep in a slump in form, but action at this time gives us a potential opportunity to turn things around THIS season as well as think about planning for next. Some have argued that Sturrock deserves to take us to Wembley - I agree, he does, but our goal has never been to win a Cup Final but to get out of this League. If I had the choice, like many I believe, it's all about promotion. The JPT trophy offers a great experience but the trophy itself just is a nice-to-have. Therefore, if we're mixing it up, we need to mix it up NOW.

3) The appointment of Phil Brown (if that's what is happening)
For me, the jury will be out until he comes in and shows me what he's made of. I'm a big fan of 'characters' which often means there are very few people in football (and life really) that I actually dislike. Sadly, Phil Brown is one of them - not that he'll care, I'm sure. However, if he comes to this club, he'll have a clean slate and I'll be looking for the positive aspects of his personality and approach before I focus on any negatives. What have you got Phil?

4) Sturrock leading the team out at Wembley
For me, this says a lot about Ron Martin AND his relationship with the club and Paul Sturrock. It would be easier to cast Paul adrift and focus on the future. Treating the Wembley game as a one-off, separate from our campaign could actually be a stroke of genius. Something like this has never been done before (to my knowledge) but I love the possibilities it offers. The new manager and the team can focus on promotion while Wembley can be seen as something of a day out. Who knows, the team might even pull themselves together to 'do it for Sturrock' on the day. Whatever happens, I reckon 30-odd thousand shrimpers will be singing his name to the rafters. Not everyone will agree with this but, if Paul and the new manager are open to the idea, I think it's fantastic and I love being part of a club that's allowing for a bit of sentiment and thinking a little outside the box.

As the only aim was promotion had we won those three games but still not got us up he should still have gone. He didnt loose his job over three games he lost it over three months as we have been **** since Christmas and something had to be done.

You now have your wish :winking:

Thoughts on Brown?

I'm not sure the words are in question but surely the timing?

Its insensitive but agree that it makes sense to give a new man 6/7 games to see the players live and assess what he needs. If not the players come in the first day of the season and the new man has to make judgements based on trainng and friendlys at Witham.

Wouldnt be my choice if correct but I dont like the results or the football under Sturrock so short of being relegated which I cant see I dont see it can get much worse.

I think anyone who was at Roots Hall when he took over will never forget the stunned silence as we tried to remember who the players he had signed were on the pitch, and the agony of the first few months as we got to know them and the positions they played. When I look back over 48 yrs of supporting this club I would rate PS ACHIEVEMENT of turning this around and not sending us out of the football league as probably the greatest in that time.To think we missed promotion by a floodlight failure ,and this season by the worst injury crisis in my memory would suggest Sturrock has not failed ,but has been so unlucky.Leading the team out at Wembley should be the least he deserves

Yeah I agree. Hopefully he can at least give us that 'new manager boost' and maybe provide a catalyst for the play offs, but who knows. Bit uneasy about having someone who hasn't had a job since 2011 and is probably best known for giving his players a bollocking in front of a packed stadium at half time.
