Manager Sacking and Appointment Thread

Hi ColEwe,

I for one always want a strong Col Ewe.
Love the banter! There is only one team in Essex though and try and guess who that is.
I take your point about trying to play like Man City.
We had the same issue with Molsley.
It can be done though, you need to come and watch us Shrimpers , last 2 games 8-0 , 6 Points.
We play incredible football starting at the back.
The Key is getting the right players in and having the correct Coaching Staff.
Unfortunately for you Kev, Benno and Ruby have Dark Blue Blood in their veins.
Good Luck in your search.Good win against Grimsby. You may have your man already. xx
Cheers Captain, Matty Etherington is the caretaker having stepped up from managing our under 21 squad, he will be in the frame but others will be considered as well, your former player Neil Harris who has recently left Gillingham is up there with several others. Your lads have done exceptionally well given the chaos that has been dragging your club down over recent years. I do feel you will still hit the play offs and possibly get back into the EFL if your form continues or dare I say improve. Meanwhile yes there is only one team in Essex in the EFL, guess who that is:Smile:

SUFC off course but you in the running for second place
, unless you get relegated/ As for dare you say improve , im firmly off the belief once this embargo is lifted , we will improve as we will add more players to the squad allowing some present players a well deserved rest to get over the niggles they carrying ,im also sure thet knowing we have such a good scouting system etc in place those recruits will be first class , equally as good if not better and good fits for the club .

You could have a really enjoyable season Stewart, you all deserve it after the ****e you have been through.

With our squad we should be nowhere near the bottom of the league, but Garnerball is never going to work in league two, we are not Man City! I do feel sorry for him in some ways, he wanted to play football the right way, but in league two you need to play more direct than he wanted to do.

Hmm. We play good football in the division below and Notts County, the only team who passed the ball better than we did last season, are doing ok in L2 this year (the occasional freak result aside). I’d say L2 was more physical but that doesn’t mean you have to play more direct, only you need to match their physicality and earn the right to play.

Hi ColEwe,
Now that we can get rid of Disaster Ron the Rat, 17th November. You watch us go. Could well be in EFL 2 next season, hopefully you can survive to continue our battles. Remember our last game together at your place, Pre-Season Friendly, you Struggled and only got the Draw with a Fluke John Akinde goal in injury time ! Good Luck to Both. We are on our way Back. 🥰:Footballer::LoyalSupporter:

Yes the game against Notts County down here was a hell of a match, open with lots of good football played, we did well to beat them 5-4, but then we lose to Forest Green 5-0, ho hum!

Not the only team, so did the best team to visit RH last season......Chesterfield.

I think the word direct conjures up images of hoof ball amongst many. I see it as making sure you shoot or cross when you have the chance. Long throws and crews that count etc.

As Kev has learnt his trade we have greatly improved by being more direct. Oli and GSM with two great goals on Tuesday from distance. Taylor making sure he delivered the cleared corner whilst Kensdale is still in the box for our first on Saturday. Or Noors put the game to bed stunner

For way to long we would pass in all those circumstances.......The stats on completion percentages final third have probably gone down but we put far more crosse into good areas. JB just needs to be more direct and we could easily make top 5.

Colchester United Chairman Robbie Cowling has issued the following statement regarding the Head Coach position.

Following a series of phone calls and email exchanges with one of the owners of Crawley Town, I have found myself in a position where I must request that Matty Etherington steps down from his Interim Head Coach role for tomorrow’s game against Accrington Stanley.

Crawley Town have alerted Colchester United to their concerns that Matty may be tempted to violate the contract he signed with Crawley when he initially accepted their managerial position in November 2022.

At 3.34pm today, (Friday 27th October), I received a call from Eben Smith, who informed me that Crawley believe Matty is still bound by their contract until May 2024. Consequently, if Matty manages any of Colchester's games, a buy-out fee would be owed to Crawley.

Personally I don’t agree with the Crawley position but given that we have less than twenty four hours before the game against Accrington, which is 250 miles away, I requested Crawley's permission for Matty to lead the team for this specific match while we seek legal counsel regarding the contract.

Unfortunately, this request was denied. As a result, Matty Etherington has been asked to step down, and Scott Marshall will now take charge of the game tomorrow.

Hopefully, we can seek the legal advice we need and sort the matter out with Crawley early next week.

Robbie Cowling

Surely if what Crawley is saying is true then it's too late for Etherington to step down now? He's already managed a Colchester game so shouldn't the buyout clause still be triggered even if he doesn't manager any more matches?

Luke Garrard at Boringwood has done a job for them for a few seasons, they have overachieved, had cup runs, recruited what they needed etc..
I would have thought he had the credentials to be on the list for struggling league clubs like Col Ewe or Gillspam?
