Maher going nowhere says unhappy Ron

Very poor of Tilson to let Maher go if true..Many people on here think he is past his best, but I beg to differ....

Lots of people seem to think that if you are a box to box all energy all tackling player, then you are the man...

Why waste all that energy when you can let the ball do the work...Something that Maher is, and always will be good at. Passing the ball and letting the ball do the hard work, leaving Maher to concentrate on the game, the movement of the players etc etc. Not someone we now have at the club unfortunately!!!

You need to win the ball first, before you can let the ball do the talking.

Maher has always been more about ball retention than ball winning, so if Maher plays you need to balance him by playing a Pettefer or a Bentley out wide. That isn't to denigrate Maher's achievements, it is just an acknowledgement of strengths and styles. Incidentally, what I think marks Bailey out as an exceptional player is his reading of the game. He is so often in the right spot to snuff out trouble by using his footballing intelligence rather than his box to box energy.

Blimey. I'm stunned. You have to hand it to Tilly, though - he's ruthless when he feels he needs to be.

For some vintage displays against the Ewes, for being the metronome at the heart of our midfield, for the passing, the passion, the willingness to give his all for our club, we salute you, King Kev.

You will be missed.

:(

Matt

Ruthless my a r s e, same as the Hooper decision, just as you need him with Macca a shadow of his former self we release Maher. Tilson's timing never ceases to amaze me and as for you lot just making this into a good luck Kev thread instead of what is Tilson doing, well nothing suprises me on Rose tinted zone anymore!

It's a great testament to his ability that even in the League One winning squad which included Freddy, Prior, Goater, an on-form Flahavan and Gower, Kevin Maher was still perhaps the greatest influence on the way we played football..

The greatest influence ? Was that a positive ? IIRC Freddy had to come back into midfield to get the ball and almost single handed create an opening to get a shot in on numerous occassions because he didnt get that visionary throughball often enough ?

I also think it's no coincedence that since his departure from the first team squad we've been playing a hell of a lot more long balls than we used to. ..

We're a Long Ball side now then are we ? Our Midfielders are scoring a damn site lot of goals from balls that are allegedly being hoofed over their heads, arent they ?
Its the midfield this season that has brought us to the edge of the play-off zone, with their goals. Please dont suggest we would be even higher if we had a low scoring midfielder in place of one of them. Wasnt Mahers record 5 in a season or something ?

Technically speaking Bailey came in for Maher, surely, as Maher and Mac were IIRC the partnership prior to Baileys arrival. Bailey has been a revelation. I wouldnt want him replaced by Maher or anyone else. MacCormack has been playing like a man fearful of a match ban for a while now and maybe Maher could have filled his boots on occassion but I'm not sure his form was any better and early season games showed that Bailey and Maher just didnt gel as a unit.
I think the futures bright now.

I'm indifferent to Maher leaving, personally. I can remember how woeful he was during his first 5 years at the club and I'd hold my head in my hands. And I can remember times when he showed his true grit and was Mr SUFC and I was proud he wore the shirt. His petulence with refs and his "quick to blame others" attitude in the past few seasons have taken its toll on me though.

The rumoured loan to Gills is currently just that, rumoured but if he actually goes I wish him all the best. I personally think its unlikely he will return.
Maybe then we can get on with supporting a team for the future and stop dwelling on "should we have kept Bentley?" "should we re-sign Wayne Gray?"," Do we miss Maher?" etc., Football is forever changing and players will come and go. 10 years at a club is commendable for both parties concerned.
Thank You Maher and well done

One passing thought though. Have we EVER had a song about Maher ?

Something not right here.....

I like many others bought the Echo today with the words something along the line of "MAHER QUITS BLUES" on the front page. Now I'm sure that our good friends at the Echo are not the first to pick up on rumors and turn it into front page news??

I must admit I haven't got the paper as I left it at work but I can't recall any quotes from Tilly or King Kev in regards to this possible move maybe someone can confirm that for me? But if I was Kevin knowing that I might get a look in at Luton on Saturday I would take that chance with both hands!!

As I've said many times today I really hope if this story is true, that this doesn't come back and bite us in the ***!! We all know Bailey and McCormack are gonna pick up bookings, possible injuries, suspensions and with Maher in the squad we've got someone with valuable playoff experience. I have never questioned the management but I feel if we fail to reach the playoffs I gotta feeling that this thread will raise it ugly head once more?

Have to agree with you Wiggy,WTF is Tilson doing:confused:

Though very strange for the club not to have said something by now, maybe it was going to happen but someone has pulled the deal outta the water.

The thing that really grates me is that when Kev got his **** kicked out from the team it was after Tranmere at home, quite frankly there were far worse performances that day.

I'd still rather have Kev in the side in front of at least half that team that day.

For those who have said Kev needs a workhorse next to him in this thread i will have to disagree, you lot are a disgrace and truly know fcuk all about football if you really think that."Maher strolled around" i've read,if you don't like the bloke fair enough but don't talk absolute sh*t.

Well unfortunately, yes, we have become something of a long ball team. The usual routine is Clarke collects the ball from Darryl, passes around the back four for a few minutes before hitting a long, hopeful ball towards one of our strikers. Compare this to when Maher is in the team, absolutely demanding the ball of the defenders because he knew he was an infininately better passer than they were.

I think you're mistaken in equating goals from midfield with a passing team. The fact that Bailey and Mccormack have scored so many goals, predominately from about 20 yards out, does not mean that we are playing the slick, attractive passing game we were a couple of seasons back.

I take it everybody is choosing to ignore the Teamtalk story about the club denying the rumours that Kev has left then!

nothing on gills OS as yet regarding maher only stimo talking about the match at brighton on tuesday and simon royce due to sign a years extension on his contract

But maher not even mentioned - is the echo jumping the gun again ??

you never seem to amaze me with your comments i would rather have hooper out on loan playing everyweek gaining valuable match experience than just sitting on the sub bench at SUFC or plating the odd reserve match

like in his days at grays before he came to us he was warming the subs bench

Have you ever thought it may not be Tilson it may be Maher himself that wants to move away from the Hall as he has dropped down the pecking order

Or it could be Ron Martin wanting him out as he will be one of the top wage earners at the club who isn't getting a game? Whatever it is, in my opinion, its a real shame its ending like this (if this is it)

HE IS ONLY ON LOAN, HE HASN'T LEFT PERMANTLY...

If this is true, then he should get a few more games in and get him back to form, IF the move becomes permanent, then good luck to him, he has served us well, leading us to 3 cardiff finals, not to mention back to back promotions, a massive win over man utd and the 2 spurs cup matches.
