John Terry and the 'unacceptability of racism'

Total waste IMO - waste of police time , waste of newspaper coverage , TV coverage , Money , they was never going to find him guilty as Ferdinands version had to many holes in it - it should of been dealt with by the FA IMO when it was still warm and not leave it 3 months and let it drag on for so long .

Not a massive Terry fan but he has been cleared , he's not a racist .

He was certainly cleared of being racist, doesnt prove he isnt though unless they have some sort of personality scanner.

All a load of fuss and nonsense to be honest. If he had used the N word it would have been different. He is a knob jockey though.

The judgement said :

[It may be worth mentioning here that the issue for this court to decide is not whether Mr Terry is a racist, in the broadest sense of the word. I have received a substantial volume of unchallenged evidence from witnesses, both in person and in writing, to confirm that he is not. I understand why Mr Terry wants to make this point. His reputation is at stake. Although I am grateful to all those witnesses who have taken the trouble to provide information on this point, it does not help me in reaching a verdict. It is not relevant to the issue I must decide]

Basically, Terry was very well advised.

Possibly, but it wasn't you that made the comment which seemed to imply that the verdict determined whether or not the trial was a waste of money.

undercovershrimper articulated my thoughts. A complete waste of time and money - whatever the verdict. An opinion I stated on the first page of this thread.

Interesting question though. If the prosecution spends money to prove guilt and the judge rules the defendant to be innocent, then perhaps the verdict DOES mean the trial is a waste of money?

If the verdict is taken as absolute proof of Terry's innocence (as it must be if the sanctity of law is to be upheld on the concept of innocent until proven guilty), you can argue that the prosecutors HAVE blown a huge stack of cash and wasted a huge amount of time pursuing an innocent person? This could only have been determined by the verdict.

Of course, if this was Scotland, a more satisfying verdict of "not proven" could have been given.

ps your logical fallacy is http://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/slippery-slope

There will be no need to have any more court cases if the CPS decides not to waste money on what it believes is a matter for prosecution, it's all a waste of money if defendants are found innocent.

It's not actually that simple. The CPS decided on the evidence it had to prosecute. And the judge in his ruling said the prosecution had a strong case. So, on the basis that guilt is "without reasonable doubt" he was found not guilty.

Why not make Anton Ferdiand stump up for the costs? Similar sort of thing to a frivlous appeal for a red card.

Perhaps I'm just getting old but to me the bizarre thing about this case is the fact that Terry and Ferdinand publically calling each other every obscenity known to man was not a problem until one (or both depending on which version you believe) placed the word 'black' in one of the string of obscenities they used.

Agreed regarding logical fallacy, just debating the question.

We can't have the CPS being judge and jury before the event but the resultant fact remains the same. The flaw is that you can only apply the thinking in hindsight.

Because 'racism' and use of the words 'black so and so' are crimes on a par with genocide.

Farcical that this ever went to court and wasting thousands of tax payers money over some spat on a football field in the heat of the moment..what has happened to this country and all this over the top bollocks over the slightest "step out of line" culture? We seem to be a bunch of wet wipes these days. They both were as bad as each other, how it got to court stage is pathetic IMO.

Both of them should have both been made to sit on the naughty step until they grew up. How embarrassing that these people earn such obscene sums of money then play out a spat of he said she said. Terry is a horrible human being (do I have to add allegedly or in my opinion or some old gumph!!), but it should never have come to court.

What a great example to our youngsters....

Terry is no better or worse than several others in and around the England team. I know it wasn't Ferdinand who brought the prosecution in the end, but surely he could have prevented it going this far.

I guess you're a closet Rangers fan then because that is what the majority of their supporters club voted for.

Frankie Boyle put it pretty succinctly when he said ''Every other Saturday one of Scotland's smaller towns will get to learn what life was like in the time of the vikings''

Total bollocks, you ask me. Just ban the thug for what would be the rest of his professional life and get on with it, I say.

That's harsh, he has been found not guilty of the charges and was arguably our player of the tournament during the Euros, and captain of the team that won the Champions League, all with this case hanging over him. He is still one of the country's best centre backs and I don't think he's a thug, although he does - as most players seem to - have an occasional rush of blood to the head. He's done nothing to be banned for, let alone saying he should be banned for the rest of his professional life. Joey Barton he ain't.
