Obviously the people of Richmond Park don't want a Hard Brexit, or even a Brexit at all. Well done Sarah Olney, a great victory and one in the eye for the religious zealot Teresa May. Only downside is she won't now call an early GE.
Tactical voting at its best to get rid of racist Zac. I was up till 2.30 just to see his reaction. Vanity election and the mirror is now shattered.

Great win for the LIb Dems in Richmond.I hope Labour will now back a rainbow coalition against the Tories before the next G/E to include the Lib Dems,SNP and the Greens.

You are right to point out, of course that in order to do anything in the next GE Labour will need at least 3 other parties to ally with to get anywhere.

No doubt there is comfort for Labour supporters that Timmy Farron has already had talks with....Tony Blair.

Richmond Park was Lib/Dem before Goldsmith won it in 2010. I know that Richmond was a bit of a Liberal enclave as my aunt used to live there and it was always (at least it seemed to me) to be Liberal. You can never read too much into bye elections. Personally Farron's behaviour since the referendum has lead me to the view that the Lib/Dems have to take the Dem off their name. And as you might remember I voted and argued for Remain on these boards.

To be fair she was up against Zac Goldsmith who came across as a complete idiot in the London mayor election to the point even his own sister criticised his campaign, I wouldn't read too much into this past 'people don't like Goldsmith anymore'.

How is Theresa may a religous zealot?

I'd like to think she'd be a bit more prudent in regards to something so serious rather than listen to the voices in her head from her imaginary friends. I'd don't even consult the Rainbow Unicorns when I'm wondering what to have in my sandwiches.

The article you reference only says that she is guided in her decisions by christian beliefs...not that she is a zealot.

So the question still stands....how is Theresa May a Zealot?

You may disagree but she's bringing her religion into politics which in my eyes makes her a zealot.

I haven't said I disagree...in order to do that I need to understand what makes Theresa May a Zealot in your eyes.

Which if I understand you correctly, is allowing her Christian faith to guide her decisions....out of interest is Angela Merkel from the Christian Democrats also a Zealot?

.

I have no idea. Has she ever said that she uses her faith to make decisions that would impact on the population of her country?

Her party is the Christian democrats....which of course means that Christian values influence decision making and what they actually stand for.

From Merkel herself the following quote....

Faith and religion are the basis on which I and many others see the sacred dignity of the human being. We see ourselves as the creation of God, and this guides our political actions. My faith in God makes many political decisions easier.”

So in short yes like May she uses her faith to help her political decision making....thus adding another ''zealot''.

fair play to the LibDem comments here - gunning for the Tories and not highlighting the low Labour vote. They are well aware that they benefited from tactical voting and that friendly fire would bite them next time.

As far as I'm aware, this idea has only been widely championed by the Greens (who of course have the most to gain from it).

Obviously, support from SNP and the Lib Dem MP's will be critical if Labour is to regain power.

I've voted for the Lib Dems once before (in 1997) and would be happy to vote Green,if say, I lived in Brighton
or anywhere else they had a realistic chance of gaining a seat.

Such a progressive alliance of the centre left against the Tories (and UKIP, who supported Goldsmith in Richmond) makes sense to me.

It only makes sense because none of those parties has a cat in hells chance by themselves.

As Nye Bevan famously said in a 1947 speech:-"No amount of cajolery, and no attempts at ethical or social seduction, can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred for the Tory Party. So far as I am concerned they are lower than vermin."

I agree.

This sort of post shows exactly what you really stand for.

Would you say the same thing about black people or muslims. Remember your 'horseshoe' effect.

And there in lies the reason you will go to your grave a disappointed, bitter and resentful human being because, thankfully, the far left socialist ideals you and your ilk stand for and so admire are consigned to the political scrapheap and have been for many a year. As I said to you many months ago on another thread you're brand of communism/socialism/Marxism (whatever you want to call it) is dead, and thankfully so.

I'm quite happy to go to my grave as a socialist.
