George Moncur

That is a bonkers move, unless Orient are covering all of his wages surely that is additional financial burden on a team that is going to get relegated.

Had high hopes for George when he arrived but it just hasn’t worked out for him here. At least this way it frees up some wages to help towards some incomings.

He’s got obvious class but just never, ever looked remotely fit enough to be able to really affect a game. There’s got to be a system somewhere that will get more out of him but I’ve no idea what that is. Hopefully this is a sign that we’ve got some targets lined up.

I'd adapt him to a CDM holding role and let the younger midfielders do the all running. Just let him spray the ball about like a Jan Molby type player. Thing is, I don't think we have time to try him into a new role and mould them into a new system. So best to move him on, I suppose

I had hoped that his experience would rub off on the players around him, and he'd establish some running off the ball patterns for other players so he could sit in the middle and spray the ball around in a "molby esque" way.

you win some lose some, seeya george.

when he arrived he looked a class above. there were little things like not taking 5 touches to control, never missing an easy pass. but pretty soon he was down at the level of the other players.

we play a 1-2 in midfield, with 1 deep and 2 wide. so he'd find himself on the left, get in Bridge's way, get the ball on the left, jog square across the edge of the box and pass the ball sideways, often to someone coming back from offside. that was his signature move.

there's two tactical things. one he probably needed to be in a 10 position, not on the left of the 3. and we're at our best when we play high tempo pressing. Kendall is like a dog in a park and suits us well. Moncur would do one lung busting run per month, and nothing else.

but I can't ever remember a player who's played so many levels above (2nd tier!) come to us and look so out of his depth. if he carries on playing it looks like the celeb part-time circuit, Billericay under Tamplin would have been perfect for him

When GM first joined us I was pleased to hear the news as I thought a player with his pedigree had much to offer us and that he would surely prove to be an influential player at National League level.

There is a risk to signing older players as all of them, even the game's legends, eventually decline but the trajectory of their falling off is not always foreseeable. For some it is sharp while for others it is gradual. Some players are able to manage this and prolong their careers by reinventing themselves but it seems to me that the way we play did not offer many options for GM. I doubt if his lack of success with us was the fault of the management but more if a case of 'wrong place, wrong time'.

Decline can be arrested temporarily and it might be if GM goes elsewhere his new team will better accommodate his strengths than we were able to. I remain convinced it was the right decision to sign him at the time and unfortunate it did not work out for him or the club. He will not be the last players who signs for us who disappoints as that is football.

At all levels of the game players come and players go. It is a shame things did not work out the way GM and Blues fans hoped they would. I wish him nothing but the best for his future and hope he can go somewhere where can both enjoy his football and contribute to his new club.

Close to leaving - George Moncur looks set to depart Southend United (Image: Lucy Copsey)

By Chris Phillips@cjphillips1982Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher seems to have confirmed George Moncur will not be with the Shrimpers for the second half of the season.

Echosport understands Moncur is close to joining Ebbsfleet United.

And, when asked if the midfielder was close to moving on, Maher said: "Not yet no, not until it's done.

“George is a great guy but where he's at he wants to play football every week and he probably needs to for himself as well."

Moncur made 16 appearances while with the Shrimpers on loan from Leyton Orient but failed to hit the back of the net.

Can you (or @ShrimperStats) clarify what this is showing?

By touches if say Noor takes a touch to control it then passes backwards would that counts as two touches?

What’s the definition of progressive runs used here? If someone takes on the first man but loses the ball to the second does that count as a progressive run? What if they try and take on the first man but lose it does that count? If they beat the first man and the second does that count as one or two progressive runs?

Do you have one of these that includes wingbacks as well so we can see how Jack Bridge compares?

It’s showing that Moncur ranks fairly well compared to other midfielders with regards to the number of ‘progressive runs’ he makes and ‘touches in the penalty area’ he takes per match.

However only two metrics are used, and it fails to take into account any other relevant metrics, different team styles, role requirements etc.
