A 5-2 win for the Ladies today has lifted them back to the top of the Eastern Region Women’s Football League Division One South, although Blues were made to work hard for the three points by Lawford and were only truly secure during the final quarter-of-an-hour.

Hannah Smith had an early effort ruled out for offside and Ellie Nicholls and Chloe Woolaway both saw efforts saved before Lawford took the lead on 24 minutes, a forward springing the offside trap to hit Blues in transition and curling a superb finish into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

Southend hit back with two goals inside four minutes just before half-time, the first when Smith exhibited quick feet in the penalty area and found Vicky Kinsman, who forced her finish beneath the Lawford goalkeeper to equalise, and the second through left-back Lauren Johnson, who steered Kinsman’s initial header from a corner into the net.

Kinsman and Nicholls switched roles in the second period, with the latter pushed up from a previously more withdrawn role, but Blues laboured and some of the good patterns on play between Smith, Nicholls and Kinsman that had been a feature of the first half were missing.

The two best opportunities before the third goal came as Johnson made ground to meet right-wing centres in the penalty area, and although her first effort was wayward, the second required a fingertip save from the goalkeeper.

However, Woolaway doubled the advantage on 74 minutes when the Lawford goalkeeper’s clearance from besides the corner flag dropped to her, 35 yards out, and she showed good composure to control the ball before striking her finish into an unguarded net.

Danni Hindley powered home a header from a corner with 83 minutes played to make it 4-1, and Reyes Humbles completed the scoring ninety seconds later, latching onto a through-ball and beating the goalkeeper before locating the bottom left-hand corner. In-between, Lawford had bundled home a consolation.

There’s a break from league action next weekend as Watford Ladies Development of the Premier Division, last season’s Division One South champions, are the visitors to Garon Park.

Blues were beaten 5-0 this afternoon by Watford Ladies Devrlopment in a tough afternoon at Garon Park.

The first half-an-hour was even and Southend could count themselves unfortunate to find themselves 2-0 down at that point against opponents from the division above.

Watford took the lead when a forward beat the offside trap and rounded Molly Lee, who was unlucky to slip as she attempted to recover having forced the forward wide. The second goal arrived from a corner as a far post delivery was guided in.

Blues had probably enjoyed the better of the possession at that stage, and Vicky Kinsman’s aerial prowess was a threat from set-pieces, but Watford were more clinical in attack. The closest Southend came to scoring was a Danni Hindley header into the side-netting.

Blues were grateful to hear the half-time whistle with Watford piling on the pressure at the end of the first half, and it was clear the next goal would be massive. Amber Denton’s slide-rule pass released Hannah Smith early on in the second period, but her shot was directed straight at the goalkeeper.

Instead, the match was settled by three goals in four minutes around the hour mark. Lee got her hands to an attempted lob, but not enough to prevent the ball bouncing over the line, then a 30-yard free-kick flew in at the near post before a visiting forward was put clean through and located the bottom left-hand corner with her finish.

Watford could have added more goals in the final half-an-hour, hitting the crossbar twice together with a strong of saves from Lee as well as excellent defending by Beth Cooper and Denton.

Watford had been promoted as champions from Division One South last season, and this match showed the quality of the Premier Division as they attacked with pace, precision and moved forwards as a unit, creating overloads and making life difficult for Blues.

Next week sees a return to league action, away to Chelmsford City, before the next Garon Park fixture against Colchester United in the BBC Essex Women’s Cup Second Round on 17th November.

Thank you @Exiled Shrimper for the match report and as you say despite trying hard Watford are a league above so was a good test for the Ladies.

Blues Ladies were beaten 4-1 this afternoon away to Chelmsford City in the Eastern Region Women’s Football League Division One South, with Zoe Rushen’s hat-trick proving to be the difference between the two teams.

Southend were much the better side during the opening 20 minutes, but were made to pay for their early profligacy in front of goal when Rushen gave the Clarets the lead with a clinical finish into the left-hand portion of the net after being picked out by an excellent reverse pass.

By that time, Ellie Nicholls had struck the post for Blues, whilst Vicky Kinsman chipped over at the near post from a corner and Hannah Smith also dragged an effort across the face of goal.

Having moved into the ascendancy, Chelmsford settled into the game as the first half progressed, and they could have extended their lead with a header over from a corner. Excellent defending by Jordan Castle, Amber Denton and Lauren Johnson kept the deficit at a single goal.

The match then swung back in Southend’s direction late in the first half as Kinsman equalised after an attempted clearance dropped at her feet 25 yards from goal and she superbly lobbed the goalkeeper.

Blues could even have moved in front ahead of the half-time whistle when Ellie Wood was sent clear during stoppage time and she beat the goalkeeper to the ball, only to steer her finish the wrong side of the right-hand post.

In truth, Southend failed to match their first half performance after the break, lacking any attacking fluency and in need of fresh legs with only one substitute available. Kinsman nodded a corner into the goalkeeper’s gloves and also fired over, but the visitors were stung by three unanswered goals.

The first two came from Rushen, who has spent the majority of her career at Tiers 3 and 4 of the women’s game with Billericay Town. The first was another clinical finish, driving the ball past Molly Lee from ten yards out, whilst the third was an opportunistic effort from close-range as the ball ricocheted around following a corner. Chelmsford added a late fourth with an attacker brilliantly getting the better of Johnson before firing home from the edge of the penalty area.

Next week Blues host Colchester United at Garon Park in the Second Round of the BBC Essex Women’s Cup.

Blues were knocked out of the BBC Essex Women’s Cup following a 3-2 defeat to Colchester United this afternoon.

Southend made a disastrous start when the U’s took the lead just 23 seconds into the game through Emily Ager, who rolled the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the net from Ruby Greenleaf’s well-weighted pass in behind the Blues defence.

Greenleaf scored the second herself after a lofted through-ball was deflected into her path and she curled the ball superbly beyond Caitlin Spenner in the Southend goal.

Things were looking pretty bleak for Blues, who also saw Chloe Woolaway suffer a knee injury and have to be taken off the field in a wheelchair, whilst Spenner made an excellent double-save to keep the hosts in contention, pushing out an initial effort from distance before responding quickly to smother the follow-up.

Like last weekend, Southend made their own move just before the break. Beth Cooper had previously gone closest with a shot across the face of goal from the left-hand side, but Blues halved the deficit on 43 minutes when Jordan Castle directed Ellie Nicholls’ header inside the left-hand upright.

Then, during nine minutes of stoppage time, Southend equalised through Cooper at the end of an excellent team move. Vicky Kinsman located Reyes Humbles to her right inside the penalty area and she switched the focus of play to Cooper on the opposite side and she tapped home as Blues almost literally walked the ball into the net.

However, again like last weekend, the momentum was lost during the half-time interval and Colchester were quickly out of the blocks. Lauren Johnson made a last-ditch clearance after Spenner had over-committed, whilst Spenner did well to deny Greenleaf.

Colchester’s winner arrived from the penalty spot when Spenner was adjudged to have brought down Greenleaf and the young custodian was unfortunate that, having guessed the direction of the spot-kick correctly, Cassie Craddock-Ball’s penalty was aimed right into the corner of the net.

There was no lack of effort from Blues as they tried to take the tie to extra time, but there was a lack of clear-cut chances and the visitors had the better opportunities to score, with Castle making a superb challenge in the area to dispossess Greenleaf and Spenner saving well from substitute Ella Cahill.

The result means Blues drop in to the Essex Women’s Trophy, a competition they won in 2022/23. Next week they host Whittlesea Athletic in the Eastern Region Women’s Football League Plate.

Was just gonna post this - was a blessing really as April is working today so would have missed it
