Jim Standen played for Arsenal, Luton and West Ham . He was part of the Worcestershire side that won the County Championship in the early Sixties., having joined them while at Arsenal. I am sure they were others at that time. Footballers had a natural break, allowing them to double up. Dennis Compton doubled up, played for Middlesex and Arsenal. And we played Southport in the league for the last time in 77-78 I think (?)
We had John Burridge in goal on loan from Villa and they had ex Villa 'keeper and Worcestershire wicketkeeper Jim Combes in goal for them. We won a really entertaining game 4-2 with Dave Smith playing a 4-2-4 formation.
We finished the season runners up to Watford, they got relegated from the Football League.
Well they have Matt Tootle in their ranks. He played against us for Crewe in the Football League Trophy final in 2013. Crewe won of course. Hopefully his Trophy wins are at an end should Peterborough Sports end up playing us.What/who are Peterborough Sports? It sounds like a leisure centre. I’m aware they’ve climbed up into NLN, but anyone know anything more about them?
I am not saying that. Can I just confirm you are saying you'd rather reach the Quarter Finals of the non league trophy to a decent FA cup run to the 3rd round?
Totally agreeI don't understand your response. I'm saying I would rather have soft draws v Step 4 in FA Cup games so we can get deeper in that and earn good money.
Instead we typically get away to teams higher than us in the FAQ4 and sadly for us a horribly tough R1 tie when we got through that this season.
Tamworth and Dagenham will have had 2 TV ties each in FA Cup this season soon. Borehamwood made R5 recently. We are due some of that luck. Feels like we used it all in the noughties.
Uniquely it was always good to welcome a nice team wearing gold /yellow shirts .was thinking the same , used to like Southport, Southend v Southport had a ring to it . saying the it will probably be Peterborough Sports who we have never played before .
Chris Balderstone was another who played both games professionally.Jim Standen played for Arsenal, Luton and West Ham . He was part of the Worcestershire side that won the County Championship in the early Sixties., having joined them while at Arsenal. I am sure they were others at that time. Footballers had a natural break, allowing them to double up. Dennis Compton doubled up, played for Middlesex and Arsenal.
There were quit a few eg Graham Cross , Leicestershire allrounder ,starred in the successful Leicester City of the early 60’s .He played in defence but ,sensationally for the time ,wore the number 10 shirt. Got crocked by Manure in the 1963 FA Cup final.Chris Balderstone was another who played both games professionally.
Until sometime in the 70's, there was an alleyway between the houses in Shakespeare Drive & the back of the West Stand, where you could walk down to get to the North Bank.If there were an entrance via Shakespeare Avenue, there would have to be a very long bridge or tunnel, passing over or under Fairfax Drive.

Dennis Compton, (I’m old)Chris Balderstone was another who played both games professionally.
