FA Trophy fourth round draw - Southport (H)

Some names from the past in both squads. Danny Philliskirk playing for Southport, Luke Steele on the bench for Peterborough.
His dad, Tony, was a prolific goalscorer for several clubs in the 80s and 90s. Took up refereeing when he retired - got up to Northern Premier League standard.

Luke Steele, at the age of 40, is there as a co-manager rather than player.

Chris Balderstone was another who played both games professionally.
Trevor Bailey was a successful amateur footballer winning the FA Amateur Cup with Walthamsow in 1952 as well as turning out for Southend United reserves amongst other sides while playing cricket at international level.. Later a director of the club of course.

Attendance last night was 442. So don't expect hordes of away fans!

I was also surprised to see this gate , and a ex Football League Club , I believe our very own Mike Marsh played for them after us ( retired from football due to injury ( a £500,000 insurance Job ) but could still play in the non league ) and nearly won the promotion back to the Football league in the late 1990s with Southport.

Just goes to show, we don't want to be hanging around too long in the non - league structure, there's me hoping for 7000 crowd on Saturday at the Theater of Broken Dreams ( Roots Hall ) could be only be 700 in 20 years if we don't get back to the Football League ASAP

They average around 1,200 for league games.

I'd expect perhaps a couple of hundred from Southport. It's a big away day for them!

Tough time of year financially though, so fair play to the 2 or 200 of them that travel, first week of Jan. It's a long way. 250 miles or 5-6 hours each way.

Much more about this in the thread about footballing cricketers or cricketing footballers:

He lived on either Chadwick Avenue or King's Road. I phoned him once when I was a young kid.......the days when you could find famous Test cricketers' names in the telephone directory!😂

Southport look to have a very experienced manager and players. Former EFL manager Jim Bentley has done the rounds of Northern clubs. Well travelled forwards including Jamie Procter, Dior Angus and Danny Lloyd. We cannot take these too lightly as will be up for a big day out. Already testing the fanbase to see if they can fill a coach.

I can see them doing adults for £10/12 which tbh would be fair, would still attract a decentish crowd I reckon.
Yep I think there is a minimum price structure so £10 would be the cheapest probably be nearer £15 though.
Anything over 2k is a decent crowd in this competition.
