Very much so! Some people seem unable to look beyond the player and see that perhaps they are just not suited to the chosen style. I reckon Harris would have banged more in had he been used properly. I really hope he just tells Benyon to get forward, lurk in/around the box, and pounce on anything and everything. Unfortunately I suspect we'll be seeing a lot of him 20 yards away from where he should be because he's been told to run the channels.

Yeah I've got these same fears but surely if we can see it then Sturrock will know this too. Which is why I said earlier in the thread perhaps we're changing out style a little for the remainder of the season or at least getting players on board for a Plan B?

I was hoping for a quick striker in the Theo Robinson mould. We tend to hit it long so if the oppositions centre halves are winning all the battles with our target man then we could hit it over the top for the said striker to run onto. Remember Dervite and Clark launching it forward for Robinson in our League One days.

That said Elliott Benyon has proven himself at this level before with Torquay and its very difficult to predict how we're gonna play in the coming months at this stage until the window closes and we know who's come and gone.

Seems like a good signing to me. And maybe (just maybe) it is the competition Harris needs to finally kick start his season.

Strikers are judged on goals...

This is what worries me. Our style of play just doesn't suit a 'fox in the box'. Our chosen strikers spend 80% of the time deep or in the channels. I've lost count of the amount of times a cross has been put into the mixer this season and neither of our strikers are anywhere near the six yard box to stab it into the net. They are instead watching what's going on from deep or from the channel.

Harris is a box man, and looking at the vid of his Stockport goals, Dicko also scored a large proportion of them through being in the six yard box when the ball came in. Sturrock expects his strikers to do a bit too much and, like Dicko and Harris, I suspect Benyon won't get the goals he's expected to if he's lost out in the channel when the ball goes into the box.

No way will this team or manager change it's "style" of play as far as I can see, which makes me wonder what a 5'9" "fox in the box" player will bring to the party. Maybe they tried to get a 3-team switch going as part of the Benson/Clarke deal with somebody like Grant as already mentioned & for whatever reason this was what we ended up with. Clarkey would fit in far better as a "big lump up front" if you ask me!

Plus, if he doesn't score within 3minutes against the Daggers he'll be the biggest donkey to have worn a blue shirt since Laurent/Harrold/Paynter [delete as appropriate]...

You're right. As soon as we make a signing they become the best player in league 2 without kicking a ball or been seen previously according to shrimperzone. Im holding judgement for 10 or so games in. Obviously hope the lad is what we are missing. Proved at Torquay he is very capable.

I didnt make this comment. I think blue79 hacked my account :winking:

In fact I think he is excatly the sort of player that does suit the style of play. From all accounts he is extremely hard working, closing down defenders, chasing etc. Just knows where the goal is as well. He'll run the channels, create space for others and chip in with a good few goals hopefully

75k I heard and 35k for Timilin...

Who's going then????................................or perhaps we're giving them shares in FF.

This is great news just for the fact that the club isn't resting on its laurels and is quickly trying to improve a squad which in my view isn't quite good enough for a top 3 finish and more importantly adding to a strikeforce which isn't up to the required standard.

I dont see why being 5:9 is a problem with our style of play, he can still run the channels and get on the end of knockdowns and more importantly score goals. The key is to find a targetman top play alongside him so I'm hoping that somehow Mohnsi can come back into the fold to fill that role.

It is also good that we have actually gone and bought someone for a fee nice and early in the window, dont think Sturrock has been able to spend any money so far and it has shown with the poor quality of strikers brought in barring Corr.

Of course the great unknown is whether Benyon is actually any good, he has performed in this division before which is encouraging and I would expect him to be better than what we currently have but you never know until they actually play a few games.

That's not a great unknown IMHO, Benyon is proven at this level and was very highly-rated up until his move from Torquay. Whether he will fit well into our style is another matter although I would say Sturrock is best placed to make a judgement on that and he clearly thinks he will or he wouldn't have signed him. Let's just give the guy TIME to make an impression, too many good strikers have been hounded out of this club.

Promising signing - hopefully he'll be key in firing us to promotion!
