The problem with that deal was it got leaked, thanks to Malpas not welcoming the attention from Southend. This then alerted Rangers & Celtic to getting a bargain and once they were in the frame we never stood a chance. However, as McDonald is close-mates with Stevie Hammell and had been down to Roots Hall a number of times, he was initially really up for signing I believe.

In hindsight, I'd have punted Eastwood out summer 2006 & got in 3 quality strikers (McDonald & O'Donovan would have been 2 of them) & not wasted time with guys like Harrold & Paynter either! This strategy would also have meant no Foran!

True, maybe I shouldn't have said "in hindsight" in my post, at the time I was one for advocating our best chance of staying up in the Championship was cashing in on Fred & spending that profit on 4 or 5 key players. I guess the only win we got from this not happening was picking up Macca for £30k. If Preston knew we'd got a couple of £m for Eastwood in summer 2006, they would no way have been as generous when they punted him on!
