Damien Scannel

Surely then if the Scannel deal goes through - that is Morgan shipped off back to Looooooton? Unless Tilly wants to start overloading on players for wing positions like up front?

i think even if the scannel deal fell through i still wouldn't want morgan, even for free. don't think he is league 1 class

Probably wrong on this but thought i heard it somewhere - don't we have an initial deal with Luton for Deano already from a couple weeks back? I've been full sure until now he would be ours in Jan...not sure how i feel about the lad yet - OK is my opinion so far

He was signed with a view to a permenant move so presumably he'll sign subject to him still wanting to move to us and us still wanting to keep him. I think he's done ok yesterday - when upfront he offers us something a bit different to the other strikers in the squad, that being pure pace. On the wing yesterday he did ok. He wasn't anythnig special but had we won (which we really should have done) then I don't think he'd be getting slaughtered.

Selected highlights from a match report of yesterday's Havant & Waterlooville v Eastleigh game:

*Southend-bound wing wizard came in for Ashan Holgate and played up front

*Eastleigh began on the front foot and almost made a stunning start after 30 seconds. Scannell chased a long ball forward and pressurised Neil Sharp into a hurried clearance

*Not long after putting Scriven under intense pressure in the Havant goal from three successive corners, Scannell had the best chance of the half on 24 minutes. Hann pounced on a slip by Jay Smith in his own half and played Scannell through. Scannell did the hard bit by rounding Scriven, but somehow fired wide of an open goal.

*Scannell lashed over from the edge of the box

*Eastleigh then went close to going ahead on the hour when, at full stretch, Scriven could only flick Hann's right-wing corner as far as Scannell six yards out. Scannell stabbed the ball goalwards and Eastleigh were getting ready to celebrate but Poate was in position on the post to hack the ball off the line. As Havant struggled to completely clear the ball, Scannell picked it up on the edge of the box and thumped an effort just wide a minute later.

From this weekend's Daily Echo sports paper, "The Pink":

DOSWELL: WE CAN'T STAND IN THE WAY

Eastleigh won't seem the same without the dancing feet of Damian Scannell in the second half of the season. But, on a personal note, Paul Doswell - the man who persuaded the talented striker on board at the Silverlake Stadium - is delighted that the 22-year-old's dream of breaking into the Football League is about to come true.

Speaking after Scannell had agreed a £5,000 move to Coca-Cola League One side Southend United this week, Doswell said: "I'm delighted for him. It's a bit of a personal one for me. I sold the club and Eastleigh's ambitions to Damian when he joined from Fisher in the summer and it was a big call when we made changes on the management side in September. Damian didn't enjoy his football when Phil Handford was here as coach and then David Hughes said he wasn't happy being manager and that led to Ian Baird coming in as boss.

"Damian has flourished under the new regime and it's credit to Bairdy that he started to show what he could do again. For six or seven games he was outstanding and that's when his agent started to tout his name about to a number of Football League clubs. We've had at least six scouts turning up for every home game ever since."

Those scouts include John Gorman from Southampton, but unfortunately for Saints-mad Doswell, the St Mary's man chose the wrong night.

"John Gorman came to our 0-0 draw against Thurrock," he said. "It was a bitterly cold night, the pitch was frozen and Damian did okay, but he wasn't great. I had a call back from Saints this week enquiring what the latest situation was with Damian, but the deal with Southend was done so quickly that it was too late.

"We were also in discussions with Nottingham Forest about him and they'd indicated that it might be acceptable to loan him back to us if they signed him. But once Southend had moved in, no one really got a chance to sit down and talk to him."

Although Scannell agreed terms with Southend this week, the move cannot be finalised until January 1 when the transfer window opens. His crowd-pleasing pace and trickery will be sorely missed at the Silverlake Stadium by fans, team-mates and management alike.

"From a football point of view, Bairdy, David Hughes (co-assistant manager) and myself are all really disappointed he's going," said Doswell. "We're sitting fourth in the Blue Square South and we're in the last 32 of the FA Trophy and you don't want to lose one of your main components. But, on the other hand, you should never stand in the way of people progressing. We've proved with Damian and Bradley Thomas, who left us to sign for Yeovil, that we're a club that allows players to move on.

"I speak to Damian most days and I know he's thoroughly enjoyed his time at Eastleigh and he's very appreciative of all we've done for him. Like Bairdy said, he's hit the post and the bar with other Football League clubs, but never quite found the target. This time he's found the back of the net and now he needs to score a hat-trick and get another move even higher."

If Scannell does climb onwards and upwards from Southend, Eastleigh have ensured they will reap the financial rewards by agreeing a 25 per cent sell-on clause with the Shrimpers.

"I'd love to see him playing at the top level," said Doswell. "He's conducted himself fantastically during his time with us and, likewise, we've been really good to him. We always knew it wouldn't be a long-term thing when we signed him because of how good a player he is. Some fans have accused us of being naïve for having a clause in his contract stating that if a bid of £5,000 came in for him he was free to go. But, if we hadn't agreed to that clause, we wouldn't have got the player. All power to our elbow for getting him here in the first place."

Although Baird had nothing to do with Scannell's signing, he has been quickly won over by the Croydon-based wideman. "Damian can go as high as he wants to as long as he is managed in the right way," he said. "Since I've been here, there have been no restrictions on him. I've just told him to go out and play."

Interesting. We lack pace badly so he should improve matters if just with that.

Am I right in thinking he's more left than right wing?

Let's hope he can be a replacement for Wayne Grey. We really miss his pace and should have kept I think. I don't think Morgan is right for us, poor final ball and just cannot shoot.

Only worry with Scannell is the step up. It's a big 'un, apparently MaDonald caused defenders all sorts of problems in non-league but he's finding it a lot harder this term - I'd stick with him though

In today's Southern Daily Echo, there is an interview with Damian Scannell, in which he thanks Eastleigh and their manager for helping him to achieve his dream of breaking into professional football. The article states that he has put pen to paper on a two-and-a-half year deal with us, which will be finalised once the transfer window opens next week.

Scannell said: "I am ecstatic about the move to Southend and I can't wait."

He credits Eastleigh manager Ian Baird for helping to make him a better player.

He talks about when he was at Fisher Athletic, a number of opportunities to move to a League club arose, but came to nothing: "Last year I was thrown about the place. I was on trial at Watford and was meant to go there and sign but then I went to Millwall, Wolves and Leeds, but things just kept falling through. I was actually travelling to Leeds to train and I fell ill. I was at Millwall for two months and was meant to sign on loan but it fell through. I was at Watford for a couple of weeks as well. Really and truthfully, it played with my head. That is why I came to Eastleigh to get away from it and obviously God and Eastleigh have helped me get where I am."

He then goes on to explain just why he chose Southend over Nottingham Forest:

"I spoke to the manager (Steve Tilson) and he said he is very interested in me starting. It is not all about money, it is about if you are going to play. He said that if I prove myself there are no politics and I will play, so what else can you ask for?"

Sounds like a lad with his feet on the ground and sounds as though he is hungry to suceed at this level , i have never seen him play but really do like what i have heard , i for one will have my fingers crossed that he does impress the same as i have done with charlie Mac , lets hope they both win the fans over and prove that Tilly does have a eye for talent in the lower leagues.

Yesterday clearly wasn't a good day all round for us. Our new winger was subbed in Eastleigh's game yesterday due to an injury and is unlikely to play for them at the weekend.
