Dale farm evictions "may breach human rights"

Yes, but he didn't actually own the "casino" money he was playing around with. The Dale Farm residents do own the land they're being evicted from.

Not sure what the link to the UBS fraud is Barna? If he had used his own money no crime would've been committed and as for one rule for the rich - if found guilty I reckon he will be going to jail - how would that differ if he was poor?

I think that UBS are reaping what they've sown here, trusting all that money to an African. Did he write to them promising a share of a big inheritance?

This is the view from the horse's mouth(so to speak).Probably won't be in the Echo though.

....and of course we can rely on this being the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

I'm not wading back through 30 odd pages and 500+ posts, but how the heck were these people given access to utilities? I'm also baffled by the expression "cultural sites" - if that's what they want they can easily return to their roots in the Emerald Isle.

The link was obviously the amount of money involved.Do you really think 18 million pounds of taxpayer's money is a price worth paying?Isn't the punishment supposed to fit the "crime?"I agree that the UBS rogue trader will probably end up in jail but do the Dale Farm residents really deserve to be made homeless?

Having just watched it, hats off to the leader of the council. The travellers didnt really do themselves any favours and would have probably alienated themselves even further from normal society. Once again, where are the men?

A lot of them are not meant to be living at Dale Farm. The Wives on Dale Farm can get maximum benefit and tax credits that way, and the men can claim at their other dwellings, as they are meant to be at a different address, and they can use One of their many names they have.
The many names thing is a well known tool for benefit fraud, especially where they have to declare any properties or land they own. It's also used to avoid too many driving points on a license, and to get around any driving ban.

Can't see any one with the balls to investigate the travellers. For example, you or I would have the fraud investigators camped outside our house to see who is living there, if suspected of claiming for a single person, when maybe a partner is living at the address and bringing in money. They are hardly going to go on Dale Farm and do this. So yes, they are above the law, and all you tax payers are paying for it.

I believe the correct pc term is "culturally appropriate sites." :winking:

Yes it is. Otherwise you are more or less saying anyone can build anything they want wherever they want to, and if you actually lived in this country your opinion may be more valued.

Am I right in thinking that council doesn't actually have to provided alternative accommodation anymore? It changed a while a go I think. Also, someone made a good point on the radio. They are not travellers, they don't travel, yet say they can't go. Also, proper true gypsies have those wooden huts and travel by horse and cart, these don't.

On the Channel 4 programme last night, apparently the council had offered one family a 4 bedroom house but they couldnt live there as it would be like a prison.

How are these travellers being made homeless, they live in caravans with which they used to travel back in the day when they were travellers.
And yes in my very humble opinion kick them off dale farm out of essex and out of Britain.

Wasn't that obvious. They are not being made homeless, they have been offered alternative housing and many actually own other properties in the UK and overseas. The crime here is that they have ignored a court order - if the punishment is to have the court order imposed - then yes the punishment does fit the crime.

There are many things I'd rather my taxes not go towards but this is not one of them. It is worth every single penny.

Traveller defines their ethnic group, it does not describe their current living arrangement... For example being English means you are of English heritage not that you live in England.

I wonder what the Dale Farm community cost us in benefit fraud in comparison to say, the settled community of Basildon District?

I also wonder what the total devaluation of property in Crays Hill is? For example the guy who got arrested as he lives backing on and got aggressive... I think he said his place had dropped from £400k to £100k. Would the total be near to £18m?

Just asking...
