Coronavirus (Non-Politics)

China ups it's figures by 50% but no one knows how much ours will go up by when non hospital deaths are added on.
And there are the uncountable add ones, for example NO bowel cancer surgery has taken place in 3 weeks at Southend so some treatable, life saving, operations aren't happening and some of those persons will die, almost direct covid related but will never be in the figures.

As the Health Secretary it does lay at his door. He makes public announcements about what his department is going to do, then he is responsible for making it happen. That's the whole point in having someone in charge - oversee, big picture, take responsibility, make it happen.

And there’s a global shortage of PPE but listening to the BBC you’d think it was only this country. Also, our stats are comparable with many other countries including France but it appears our national broadcaster only feels the need to compare stats with S Korea and Germany.
By all means hold government to account but this feels like petty point scoring. BBC even interviewing NHS workers who have been shown to be Labour activists - how is this in anyway balanced reporting?

A bit like the unamed NHS director who wanted to phone Barbour and Burberry to ask them for PPE, but just had to go through the BBC for the number. Lets just have a little think about that.

Yes, I think we will have a better understanding of the impact by comparing total 2020 deaths to 2019 and 2018 - only then will we know if it has been truly horrific or relatively well controlled.

239 confirmed cases in Southend hospital now,
116 deaths, directly contributed to Covid 19 in Southend hospital.

Condolences, and prayers go out to every one of their families and friends, and there are bound to be some shrimpers in that total

BBC News site:

The number of coronavirus victims in Britain's care homes could be as high as 7,500, five times more than the official estimate, the sector's main charity has warned.

"Without testing, it is very difficult to give an absolute figure," Martin Green, chief executive of Care England, told The Daily Telegraph.

"However, if we look at some of the death rates since April 1 and compare them with previous years' rates, we estimate a figure of about 7,500 people may have died as a result of Covid-19."

Some of the posts on here are drifting close to the political no go area. Please bear this in mind when posting. 'Politicals' will end up being deleted which is a total waste of both a poster's and mods time.

Thanks everybody and keep safe. RHB

I would have thought that it's very difficult to comment on the handling of the situation in the UK (and elsewhere) without making what could be described by some as a "political" comment.

Be braced for a bıg jump Monday/Tuesday/early next week when the deaths from the outside community, care homes, home deaths, etc., are to be added in for the first time; up until now it has only been deaths confirmed by tests and inpatients of hospitals that have counted.
I believe these deaths to be added in will also be retrospective, so since the counting began...
It could be a big increase so the media will, no doubt, have a headline feeding frenzy.

Hospital admissions levelling out now which means deaths should start to fall. Another three weeks of restrictions should get the NHS in the clear which was the whole point.
Will the virus have burnt out by then? Seems unlikely, I expect some form of restriction for months yet. However, I think further restrictions will mainly apply to elderly and those in high risk groups, the rest of us largely back to work etc. Going to be a long hard summer for many but I do see signs of positivity.

Hospitals will have Palative care wards set up in many instances this week so the oldies, and others, who have covid and are not going to recover/unsuitable for treatment due to underlying conditions can be moved from homes etc and their end of life care communally overseen.
It may allow more relatives to spend time with them and lower risk to other BUT is a HELL of a happening and another dimension to this nightmare situation.

Whilst I agree there are still some that will use it as an excuse to push their own political agendas. We review each post and obviously we are mindful of the current situation. If you feel someone’s post is political and you’ve had one similar deleted use the report button. We are human and don’t sit on here 24/7 and do occasionally have a few that slip through the net.

We do not target individuals we look at the post not the poster.

I don’t know how many times I’ve had to say this but we do this for free. In our own spare time and do it to make this place as enjoyable as possible. Remember it’s a Southend United forum and the owners have decided to allow other discussions. Politics and any discussion was removed because some (not all) couldn’t play nice! These are the rules please be considerate and also stop with the snide digs! If you have an issue with a decision or someone’s post please do talk to us via PM or the report button.

On the first graph, I don't understand the sharp drop off from 350 days onwards? Then massive increase first week of January...assume something to do with reporting over Christmas?

Yes, if you die on Christmas day it should still be recorded as that date even if the paperwork is not done until January

yes it's a reporting lag - there can often be a spike in deaths in period between Christmas and New Year and that will only show a week or two later. On average, just under half of all deaths occur in a hospital (and that will be lower I expect over Christmas because fewer elective surgeries) and so the deaths occurring at home/care homes/hospices take a few days to filter through the system, and it's slower when people are on holiday.

A Harold Shipman style doctor or nurse could really fill their warped fantasies in this climate.

What about people 'dying' in their own homes and removed by Firefighters etc.

There is a great doc on Shipman and a decent film 'Doctor Death' which is well worth a watch....You probably have some time on your hands.

I have sadly lost a few of my elderly patients and I know most of the local homes are running with vacancies.
There has been a paper from NHS England and PHE highlighting that some of these beds in local care homes are to be used for people ready to be discharged from hospital who are still positive and will basically go from there into the home for convalescing (for want of a better word),
I know some local homes are freaked out about taking these patients
