IMHO any talk of return to any kind of normality is fanciful in the extreme. This lockdown and strict social distancing is set to run for a long time yet. Science is the only sure fire way out of this. Saving lives takes precedence over education, surely?

The only way you will fully stop the need for social distancing is with a vaccine. Our lives won’t return to what they were prior to this unless that is achieved. There are surely limitations that can be put in place for the children to go back. It is an essential need and especially for those who are in a GCSE year. I really do feel for them and hope that this doesn’t affect their careers and life later on.

The queue is quite long but there are less people in the shop. Probably 20/25 minutes from the top off the car park

How is the Range essential shopping !!!
FFS we need to stay in and ensure all are safe
Drives me crazy reading these comments, jobs about the house can wait a few weeks, typical macho man attitude, absolutely astounded that Range can open unless it’s an essential purchase, Russian roulette game standing in a queue nowadays

Ah ok, but they still have much stricter restrictions than us. Their children aren’t allowed outside of their own house/garden. That has not been relaxed! Their punishments for breaking the lockdown rules is far better than our pathetic fines.

The way we police in the UK is very very different to the continent. It makes me laugh when I hear some of the rubbish levelled at our police and our freedoms which are rightly cherished.

This is an extract from their web site which doesn't make it right but does make it legal.

Following on from Monday evening’s announcement that all non-essential stores are to close, we’ve had confirmation from Trading Standards that we can remain open during this period of uncertainty for the communities that we serve. We are a value retailer and understand that a lot of our customers rely on us to provide essential items like food and groceries, pet food and veterinary items, non-prescription items, toilet rolls, cleaning products and all at the value prices that they need right now.

Yep it's not so much the year 11 and 13 as they will not be going back to school even if restrictions are lifted.
It's the year 10 and 12 children that will really be impacted by longer closures.

Right....any shop any shop can sell those and therefore stay open?

How long can a full lockdown last before the damage to the economy is too great, and more people die through poverty from a crashed economy than covid itself?

I'm sure that's the big question for Government at the moment.

I predict another full lockdown for 3 weeks then a gradual re-opening of shops, construction, etc like we've seen in Italy, Spain etc. if the curve continues to flatten.

Please note that in Spain there has been no re-opening of anything other than essential shops ( eg, supermarkets, baker's,chemist's) as there has this week in Italy as with children's clothes shops, for example. The current lockdown here has already been extended until 26 April and will almost certainly be extended for another fortnight,at least, after that.It is true, however, that public construction sites and some small factories were re-opened at the beginning of this week.

Oh don’t get me wrong I agree with you, their methods can be a little over the top. They’re dodgy and corrupt as anything but people are adhering to the rules there because their fines are serious money.

£30 fine if you pay within 14 days is just pathetic! And doesn’t exactly put off the idiots of our country. If anything they take the attitude of “**** it if I get caught it’s only £30”.

That's correct but may well be changed soon. After all people are allowed out to exercise their pets!

Fines can accumulate quite quickly after a first offence, eventually leading to imprisonment.

The economy takes precedence over absolutely everything and a lockdown won’t be in force for months, of that I'm sure. Schools and non essential workers will be back as soon as possible. As long as the NHS are within capacity and can cope, restrictions will start easing.

Interesting clarification today in police guidance....

Part of the guidance spells out that it is acceptable to buy luxury items while shopping, and that driving somewhere to exercise is acceptable as long as "far more time" is spent walking than driving .

Will please some and enrage others no doubt.

Interesting indeed. 50% of the Borough say could drive to the seafront, park in side roads and then all walk at the same time along one of the Esplanades.

Nope, it doesn’t take precedence.
It will eventually. It always does. Some tough calls for the Government over the next few weeks.
Edited to say : it’s not my view that it should, the health and safety of a population should always come first. Of course if lockdown continues, with the resulting unemployment, poverty, mental health issues etc. the damage could be even worse.

Allow me to explain.....

I have a wall hung toilet, one of those that is bolted to a frame through the tiles with a hidden system. The system developed a leak and slowly weakened the plasterboard behind the tiles. As the you sit on the toilet the weight is cantilivered onto the bottom tiles. They eventually and suddenly cracked and forced through the plasterboard, leaving me unable to use the toilet.

To fix it i had to remove toilet, all the wet board and then dry out the wooden frame we built around the metal one in order to take the plasterboard.

This time I made a better job, extra horizontal support just where the bottom of the toilet hits the wall. Marine ply instead of plasterboard and a nice little cash job to replace about 1meter of tiles ( kept some spare in the shed) for a certain Stuart Wyles who does my tiling. Many of the old school on here will know him.....He was chased and arrested for invading the pitch at home to Watford, i think it was, in about 1978. It wasn't intentional, he thought it was the final whistle when the ref had just given a foul with seconds to go.....The police had a good laugh about it and let him go.....Dont worry he works on his own and was in a room on his own and cut the tiles outside on his own in my garden.

Toilet back on but it won't go quite as tight. Not wanting to overt tighten the awkward and temperamental fittings (if they snapped it would be a disaster) i decided a beed of clear mastic around the whole toilet shape would make it nice and tight to the wall.....If anyone has other ideas please feel free to comment.

Now the problem is I don't have any mastic so the range is the best option for me. So that was one reason for my reckless shopping trip.

Reason 2..... My mother has a low red blood cell count, linked to a lack of iron and other things. She is 85 and has dementia......Getting her to take medicine and tablets is very difficult even if you border on force she will spit it out. About 20 months ago she needed 2 quarts of blood in a transfusion. The head man dealing with her, I nick named him Shaft, as he was a no nonsense, my kind of Docter and also black. Said if the tablets etc don't work the come back for another transfusion.

My mother is now struggling with her cardiovascular and feels the cold even indoors in this weather. She should be having another transfusion but e don't want to risk a hospital stay at the moment. Nor do we want to tie up vital NHS staff.....Its a tough one to decide both options put her at risk but we are also thinking of others who are in an even more serious situation than our mum.

When i went round to their house with supplies yesterday, I went down the side ally and sat in the garden, not just 2 but more like 8 meters away. I got her to come out in the sun, she still had to wear a jacket but she warmed up and it did her good. I noticed how dated and rubbish the garden furniture is. They are not mean to people but like many from that generation they wont throw things out if they are not broke, even thought he umbrella is.

So whilst I was in the range I thought I would buy some decent reclining chairs and new table so that 2 elderly people can enjoy a much needed visits from their family. Its a real struggle for my step dad so if people stay longer thats a good thing.

You see their time in a chair is more vital than anyones walk and my time on the throne, although could be deemed a luxury is much more fun than a bucket.

The moral of the story is....Be careful all you self appointed curtain twitchers because you have no idea about other peoples lives......You don't know how important 12 hours drying time on a beed of mastic is to some of us.

I raise a tinny to all you shrimpers whatever your sacrifice.
