Centenary Match

Stop complaining.

I can see this one backfireing on the club big time. It wouldn't happen to have anything to do with G King and his links to Harry Rednapp would it by chance?

Foresight, planning and money = completely sold out Roots Hall on a Saturday and celebrations by its supporters ...... Portsmouth on a Wednesday evening = possibly 6,000+ bums on seats and a nasty taste left in the mouths of many.

6000 is a bit optimistic.  I think we'll be really lucky to top 3000, even if it is the centenary match.  The only way of getting a bigger crowd is of they intend charging 1906 prices !!

Blimey 3 pages and it may turn out to be a mistake in The Echo, there is nothing confirmed on the OS. So until there is I suggest that folk calm down a bit.

The club have known about it for ages. Check the Trust's minutes - they formed a centenary committee with the club over 2 years ago. It was the Trust who tried to help the club out, it was the Trust who recognised the importance of the centenary.

The Trust had some good ideas for the Centenary, but at the end all we're left with, thanks to dithering by the club, is a poll on the OS and a meaningless pre-season friendly. Oh, and the inevitable merchandise, which will bear no resemblance to our kit 100 years ago, probably.

I'm not having a go for the sake of it, believe it or not. I just hate it when stuff has been in the pipeline for years, and nothing's done, especially for something so important.

I'll take Beaver's post as confirmation

Quote[/b] (D62SUBOY @ June 05 2006,15:04)]ok, there is some merit in the argument for saying that perhaps a 'big' club wouldn't have sent their first team down but ... and this is  just my opinion ... even if it had cost 50k - 60k to perhaps get the Bermudan nation squad over here I for one would have been more than happy for the club to have shelled out that kinda dosh for what is a very special occasion for the club (£1.5 million made on season tickets alone so far). It would have certainly filled Roots Hall to capacity (something I seriously doubt will happen now) and just perhaps we would have seen The Goat back at The Hall for one last occasion.
IF.... this rumour, and it hasn't been officially announced yet, is true I think the club have seriously underestimated what exactly the Centenary means to the supporters of our beloved Southend United and the club in general.

The Club havn't made many mistakes in the last 5 years but this could be one they may live to regret. We shall see!
I don't think reading it in the Echo constitutes a rumour, it even listed other centenary things like a book and maybe a ball ! (not a round one, one where you take a lady in a long dress and have a dance!)

This match has been something I have pestered the club and Trust members on for months. The club gave me two dates, both now seemingly wrong, and the two Trust members told me it was one of three Prem clubs or one European side on the shortlist.

It's the club silence that is most annoying .

Seriously, after all they are a football club and are far to busy to organise properly something this important

Abssolutely. They've had plenty of time, but achieved nothing (much). I think perhaps they think we find the centenary unimportant.

Myself, I was certainly expecting a bit more than just a friendly against Premiership relegation candidates on a Wednesday in front of 3,500 spectators...

With all due respect, I suspect more likely is the club left it a bit too late and other teams they asked already had plans in place...
and you evidence is?

To be fair, he did say, he "suspected" it is "more likely"..., that is an opinion, not expression of fact, you don't need evidence to have an opinion, although lack of (any) information from the club paints them in a bad light...

OOhh look at us.. Go back 3 seasons and we would have pi$$ed our pants to get Pompey in a midweek Carling Cup draw..
Lets wait n see what Pompey (if it even is them) roll into town with.. As opposed maybe to a West Ham youth Team or Tottenham XI ..

Past experience of SUFC's (dis)organisation abilities...

The retro kit last year, for example...

You see, you've suspected I'm a lawyer, yet there's no prima facie evidence

Christians do more than suspect there's a God, it's their raison d'etre. Yet there's no evidence.

Let's not quibble about semantics. The bottom line is, the club have ballsed up, and announced it quietly in the Echo in the hope no-one would read it there.

Well it's been 9 1/2 hours since this appeared on here and the debate and opinions began. Plenty of time for the club to have taken a gander and seen what was happening so I fully expect a hasitily put together announcement appearing on the OS within hours

If this turns out to be a total load of codswallop Im going to personally hunt down the Prodigal Son and nail gun his gonads to the nearest doorframe

I dont think its the team or the date as such that has got people riled, its the fact it wasn't exactly an unforseeable event was it? The club have had years to organise this, and the event of a friendly against Portsmouth on a Wednesday night appears, to me anyway, to be something arranged hastily...

I dont understand people saying well we arent Real or Brazil. No we are not however it is a momentous occasion to reach 100 years and im just extremley suprised that out of the top teams in the World we couldnt bag 1?
For us maybe, but no-one else could care less!

Spot on Paul, being a part of the trust committee I have seen just the amount of effort the trust has put in only to be let down by the club!

Quote[/b] (C'mon you Blues @ June 05 2006,15:00)]come on you lot. It's clear the big boys think we're not worthy of their first team for our centenary. Sad but true. If the club ask the question and everyone says no, what can they do. Blame the other clubs. And say well done Pompey. At least they agreed.
For our centenary? They wouldn't even put their 1st team out for a competitive match.

Personally I would feel that a centenary match would be more devalued by Man U sending their youth team than Portsmouth (if that's who it turns out to be) sending their 1st team.

Sorry but i disagree. It is the team, the date and especially the fact that the club, as you say, have had years to properly organise something befitting our clubs centenary celebrations.

As iv'e said before, with the right foresight, planning and commitment, both financially and work wise, I'm convinced the club could have done more to ensure we saw a big English club or a foreign equivilent down at the hall on a Staurday but as you say it does smack of a hasitily arranged fixture.

There are two other possible scenarios though.
1. The club found it impossible to convince any big club to grace The Hall with their precence and decided, with the Portsmouth friendly having already been arranged to lump the two together and try and save face. Hence the Wednesday night date etc.

2. There is something mutually beneficial to both clubs tied up in this that we know absolutely nothing about.

Either way the club have cocked up big time as far as I'm concerned
