Centenary Match

Apologies, I must remember in future to type all posts as if I've never read anyone's posts on this board beforehand, and to stick strictly to the title of the thread...

Come on, are you seriously suggesting that you've never noticed that Napster has a mild tendency to post the occasional message along the lines of "I know something you don't know"... or that, even if you haven't, the rest of us are prohibited from making a mildly light-hearted comment about it...?

* * *

Back to the thread... Pompey at home, midweek, to celebrate the centenary. G-reat. They've really pulled all the stops out there to arrange a big, glamourous tie.

If this is true, it really is a real dissapointment for us fans...

It's not every day the team you support makes it to 100 years old is it.

Poor, real poor SUFC.

Very disappointing. Seems a bit half-arsed to me, I can't see too many bothering to turn up for an opponent from the lower half of the Premiership.

Perhaps the event crept up on them and they didn't have time to get any other (decent) teams to play us...

Stop complaining.

I'm sure RM et all have done the best they can.

How many big clubs are going to send a first XI to play Southend United (That's right, Southend United, not Real Madrid, Juventus or Brazil) a couple of weeks after their major stars have just returned from the World cup.

Back to back promotions, league one champions and people still see fit to throw they toys out of the pram at any opportunity.

Fully agree - A totally crap nothing friendly....

Makes some people on here look a bit daft after claiming they had insiders that said we had top european oppostion coming over.

I agree.

There's more than one team going to be playing in these firendlies you know. I'm sure most of the biggest clubs will have some promotional money spinning tour of some exotic country planned. They're not going to care if it's our centenary or not.

There are positives - if Pompy sign delassandro - wouldn't mind seeing him play. (although that looks like a dead duck) but there is still Mendes and possibly Stilan Petrov. Ok it isn't messers Henry, Rooney or Gerrard but its something

It's not just the opposition that's the issue here, it's also the timing. What's the point in holding a centenary match in midweek? Midweek attendances are always considerably less than they would be on a weekend - unless the match is really important or the opposition something special.

I'd be surprised if the attendance for the Pompey game breaks the 3,500 mark.

Well maybe if the club had accepted the help of the Trust 2 years ago, we wouldnt be in this position.

oops.gif
The trust do a fantastic job but unless any members are best mates with G14 chairmen I doubt they could have got anyone bigger than Portsmouth.

Sorry but I don't buy that. Plenty of smaller clubs arrange testimonials and friendlies with top-half premier league teams, even in the off-season.

You just need to give them a bit of notice.

Got to agree that this is truely devaluing IMHO the 100 years celebration of Southend United. I dont understand people saying well we arent Real or Brazil. No we are not however it is a momentous occasion to reach 100 years and im just extremley suprised that out of the top teams in the World we couldnt bag 1?

We have every bloody right to peeved off about this. The club have known about this centenary match for nie on two years now. The centenary of any club is special and for us this year it's extra special.

My question is why Portsmouth? What's so special about a mediocre Premshyte team with one or two well know faces in the squad? With enough planning and foresight it wouldn't have been to much to ask of the club to push the boat out and do whatever it takes to ensure a big club and a full house at Roots Hall and give the club the kind of celebration it deserves.

I can see this one backfireing on the club big time. It wouldn't happen to have anything to do with G King and his links to Harry Rednapp would it by chance?

Foresight, planning and money = completely sold out Roots Hall on a Saturday and celebrations by its supporters ...... Portsmouth on a Wednesday evening = possibly 6,000+ bums on seats and a nasty taste left in the mouths of many.

They've known they might have to do something for a lot longer...

I know. That was a conservative estimate
wink.gif
which makes the whole scenario even more difficult to swallow.

come on you lot. It's clear the big boys think we're not worthy of their first team for our centenary. Sad but true. If the club ask the question and everyone says no, what can they do. Blame the other clubs. And say well done Pompey. At least they agreed.

I did have a minor trawl to see what other clubs were founded in 1906. I thought Brechin City weren't much of a draw but Torino might have been worth a punt.

ok, there is some merit in the argument for saying that perhaps a 'big' club wouldn't have sent their first team down but ... and this is just my opinion ... even if it had cost 50k - 60k to perhaps get the Bermudan nation squad over here I for one would have been more than happy for the club to have shelled out that kinda dosh for what is a very special occasion for the club (£1.5 million made on season tickets alone so far). It would have certainly filled Roots Hall to capacity (something I seriously doubt will happen now) and just perhaps we would have seen The Goat back at The Hall for one last occasion.
IF.... this rumour, and it hasn't been officially announced yet, is true I think the club have seriously underestimated what exactly the Centenary means to the supporters of our beloved Southend United and the club in general.

The Club havn't made many mistakes in the last 5 years but this could be one they may live to regret. We shall see!

With all due respect, I suspect more likely is the club left it a bit too late and other teams they asked already had plans in place...

Still doesn't answer the question why SUFC haven't had the guts to announce it on the OS. They must have known at the time that the Pompey game was the centenary game, so why not say it ten and there?

Because of the known backlash from supporters maybe?
