Centenary Match

Quote[/b] (Maisie Shrimper @ June 06 2006,11:00)]i know this is a southend fourm, i was just pointing out it was a wee bit sad to spend £500 on a friendly coming back from the US
, i missed notts forest last season as i was on holiday as parents had booked it before fixture list released, maybe i should of flown back to watch it,
Just had another read during lunch, Maisie I have never said I was going to the US and I am not spending £500 to come back to watch a friendly.

Please read through the posts and then make your judgements. What should I be spending my money on?

As a person with more money than sense myself , I find it hard to understand why people comment on others who may want to do things that others don't , such as spending shed-loads of money flying round the world to watch a football match.
I have been known to spend money on completely frivolous things , such as this web-site !

As Mr McNasty says spend your cash how you like, but you did say £500.

But money well spent many would argue!

How was your holiday anyway McNasty?

After 3 weeks of laying about surrounded by half-naked ladies I was just about ready to come home.
If any of you go to Kos , go to Restaurant Kostas in Kardamena and ask waiter Andreas who is the best team in the world . He could reply "Southend United".

Ken. You've been doing that for over 50 years! Not just 3 weeks.

I alerted Mediterranean Whale Watch!

I would like to offer my appolgises to P S over misreading a post, but you did say £500, which is why i had a dig, i misread us, for US lol - was thinking thats a distance!

Regardless of where you go on holiday, I find it sad that someone cant take a holiday without thinking about football (nevermind flying home to watch a match!) Is the family that bad?

If this centenary means as much to the fans as this thread seems to claim it does then we'll sell out whoever we play. If we can only sell out if we get Arsenal or AC Milan then people aren't coming to celebrate 100 years of Southend United, they're coming to watch Arsenal or AC Milan.

Personally I couldn't care less who we play, or whether its a saturday, a wednesday or a monday morning for that matter, as long as the club makes the effort to make sure that the centenary kit is ready, that theres going to be a few old players/managers there and the other little things that make it a day about us and about whats great to be a Southend United fan, then I'll be happy..

Maybe we would enjoy seeing these big teams playing as well but it should be complementing the centenary celebrations not representing the centenary full stop. The centenary's about our club, not anyone else's.

It doesn't; we won't.

Quote[/b] (D62SUBOY @ June 05 2006,15:04)]ok, there is some merit in the argument for saying that perhaps a 'big' club wouldn't have sent their first team down but ... and this is  just my opinion ... even if it had cost 50k - 60k to perhaps get the Bermudan nation squad over here I for one would have been more than happy for the club to have shelled out that kinda dosh for what is a very special occasion for the club (£1.5 million made on season tickets alone so far). It would have certainly filled Roots Hall to capacity (something I seriously doubt will happen now) and just perhaps we would have seen The Goat back at The Hall for one last occasion.
IF.... this rumour, and it hasn't been officially announced yet, is true I think the club have seriously underestimated what exactly the Centenary means to the supporters of our beloved Southend United and the club in general.

The Club havn't made many mistakes in the last 5 years but this could be one they may live to regret. We shall see!
Agree 100% with this post!

Portsmouth is a let down for our centenary game!

SUFC should have taken it a bit more seriously!

Bermuda to play at Roots Hall would have been fantastic!

A european team would have been good too, i see someone mentioned Torino (Also formed in 1906) would also have been good.

NO, but we get the skate of Pompey, how thrilling!

Agreed. Couldn't give a toss who we play pre-season as long as we're ready for the big boys in the league.

I don't class our Centenary Match, the celebration of the club reaching 100 years old, as a preseason friendly.
Its much more than that... Its a once in a lifetime event that needed to be planned, done and settled months ago. A friendly against relegation battlers on a wednesday night during preseason, not on the day of the actual Centenary, to me shows the club havent prepared for this well at all and now we're faced with a lacklustre event.

I will be going. I will be celebrating our Centenary together with thousands of others on the night and waiting with baited breath the start of the season but!.....the fact I will be celebrating does and will not detract from the dissapointment I feel at the way in which the whole episode has been handled.

It will be interesting to see what other events the club have planned to coinside with our Centenary year.

I had booked a holiday making sure that I was back in time for the Centenary Match that was as we were told was going to be on the 22nd or 29th July.  I was not to bothered about missing the Portsmouth midweek friendly.  So no Centenary celebrations for me then!!

I could however go along to the inevitable 'Centenary Ball' that the club will arrange.  Which rather than actually celebrating the event will probably be another money making opportunity (more money for players then!!).
