Post-Match Thread and Ratings Brentwood Town 3-5 Southend United F.A Trophy Rnd 3

I wasn’t at the game and assumed you were from the comment and that you might have said he missed loads of passes or mi**** loads of shots but it’s now clear you just mean because he hasn’t scored yet.

My case that he isn’t a donkey is based on the intelligent football I’ve seen him play, the fact that at least two visiting managers have called him out for special praise after games and he has played at a higher level.

Your logic would make players like Ian Rush, Torres, Suarez, Rooney, Shearer all donkeys as I think you’ll find they went double digit games without scoring.

I predict that Bim will score more goals when Bonne is on the pitch that when not.

Give over we brought him in to score goals like he had previously at this level with orient. Currently he is failing at his job.

5-3 sounds quite close, but in truth we could’ve scored another four or five goals and, following a bright start, Brentwood faded once we got back onto level terms.

I was interested to see Wind having not been at Rochdale for his previous start. My impression was that he’s a fairly straight replacement for Scott-Morriss should he depart, although he needed a little more encouragement to push forwards.

The highlight in that respect was latching onto Appiah-Forson’s perfectly-weighted pass to centre for Pepple’s first goal, although it could easily have been his first half header, ghosting in to nod against the underside of the crossbar with the ball looking as though it may have crossed the line, although it wasn’t given. He also crossed for Bridge to fire into the side-netting early on.

Defensively I thought he conceded a number of unnecessary free-kicks (I think he was the culprit at the far end for the set-piece that Brentwood took the lead from) and he got caught out in behind (with the lowlight here being the move for Brentwood’s second goal.

Appiah-Forson was equally culpable for that second goal, and on balance he comes out with credit as well, albeit with the caveat that he probably didn’t do enough to suggest he should be starting at the moment. He had an early shot blocked and wasted a good chance to equalise when he was put through by Wind, dinking over the goalkeeper but wide.

Given Wind and Appiah-Forson have both had restricted game-time and have rarely been on the pitch together, I thought they linked up well on the right, and that’s testament to the work of the coaching staff on the training ground and making sure players understand systems to seamlessly step into the starting line-up.

Miley, of course, scored the equaliser after Brentwood had taken an early lead. It was good to see him get some minutes, but this match did little to dispel the sense that Morton and Coker are the future in midfield with Miley and Husin potentially reduced to a supporting role. Once they came on in the second half, you could sense how much crisper and incisive the passing was compared to the more pedestrian play of Miley and Husin in the middle, and Coker - playing on the left of the attacking midfield roles - linked up well with Ralph when he set up Walker for the fifth goal.

Bridge and Bonne probably didn’t get as much out of the game as they would’ve hoped. Ralph grabbed that late assist after moving into the wing-back role to accommodate Golding’s debut, and it was his cross for Wind’s header; Bridge by comparison created little and blasted a penalty over. Bonne couldn’t get off the mark, although he had few opportunities himself; Pepple was the man on the spot and got that little bit of luck with the second as it squirmed under the Brentwood goalkeeper.

That said, Pepple works so hard he earns his own luck. He has very quickly become the focal point of our attacks, and it was pleasing for him to grab a couple of more routine striker’s goals, plus a penalty, instead of having to create something from nothing, because we know he also has that in his locker.

The over-riding sense from this game is just how healthy the squad is starting to look as we begin to build some momentum. Whilst it’s hard to read too much into a comfortable victory over a spirited Step 4 side, Maher at least has options now, whether that’s up front (Pepple, Bonne, Walker, plus Waldron), out wide (Bridge or Ralph, GSM or Wind), in midfield (Morton, Coker, Miley, Husin, Appiah-Forson, plus Moncur) or in central defence with the addition of Golding.

We can now select players on form, to fit different systems or depending on the opponent or conditions as desired, and it feels like pretty much the first time this management team have had that luxury.

Listened to the game on the radio whilst putting up the decs. Paul Clark was happy with the result so I am too. Hat trick for Bim which again decreases the possibility of signing the guy permanently. I realised why I hate listening to radio commentary, it removes your chances of original opinion and your views are coloured by the commentators. That said, it's better than nothing. So, on to the next round and see who we get. A decent cup run has to be a bonus in terms of confidence etc, so bring it on.

Bottom line, we scored 5 and they didn't, so it was a good result.

I am happy to get through, especially I was standing in the home end, I didn’t enjoy it when we was 1-0 down 🤦🏻‍♂️

Remember Oldham lost 2-0 to a team similar level as Brentwood!

We must sign their striker who scored twice against us, he can play higher than NL, get him in!!

8 I think
Just hope we can keep him until the end of the season, great player, has been a long time since we have had a striker who gets you rising from your seat when he drives forward. Enjoy him while we can, as was said before on here, never fall in love with a loan player. Strikers like Bim are a rarity and he will undoubtedly already have other suitors from higher up the pyramid.

Would like to think Luton won't recall him in January, hopefully have him for his whole loan duration.

Aribusitamunoipirim Emmanuel Pepple - take a bow son 👏🏻

Such a tough one though as we obviously want him to do well whilst he’s here, but the better he does means he’s less and less likely to sign a permanent deal.

Kev will be disappointed to concede 3, but over the moon to score 5. Some much needed minutes and some good performances for a few, which can only be a good thing.

It just isn't working for Bonne here, he isn't a prolific or even regular scorer and it just doesn't look like coming any time soon. He doesn't create a lot and even when he does get a chance, he doesn't take it. If he isn't scoring often then he needs to be fulfilling the role of setting his partners up but he isn't doing that either. If we can move on from him in the January period, I would, get someone else in.

On the flip side, Pepple is fantastic. Exactly what this team has been missing. Someone with a bit of muscle who isn't afraid to get into it with the defenders. The referee today must not have had to referee someone like him before because a lot of times he seemed to go near their defenders he indicated for a foul.

On to the fourth round in, January? Some lower-league sides still in it, would very much like to get one of those and have a run in this cup before we have to face one of the other National League sides.
