Post-Match Thread and Ratings Brentwood Town 3-5 Southend United F.A Trophy Rnd 3

For Bim to sign we would need to make the play-offs in L1 and then COSU would have to smash the wage structure. He is great lad but Zoners need to get real. If he was from our academy or signed from lower division last summer we would all be saying if not January then he will certainly be off in the summer.

He is great example of how the loan system can work for club in the NL......Enjoy it while it lasts because despite all the doom, gloom and Mayer out posts in the last month, we can still make the play-offs and have a great run in the trophy.
I think this is overstating the situation somewhat.
This is probably Bim's only successful loan move to date, and he has Morris, Woodrow, Brown and Adebayo to name but a few ahead of him at Luton. No chance he is ready for League 1, let alone that level of football.

Lets not get carried away lol..

The kids improving for sure and hes ok at this level, and hes saving our season, but for me he still has a long way to go.

Real grass roots football, not used to standing let alone out in the elements. We started slowly and Brentwood were pacey and took the lead from a set piece. That feeling of upset was in the air, but thankfully we got to grips with the game. They were not great at the back and time after time we broke the lines. I was in line with the goal line and Wind’s header was not even close to going over, it hit the underside of the bar and bounced back into play. We had lots of chances and probably 6-2 would have been a fairer reflection. I don’t care if Bonne does not score as long as we win and progress and continue to play as a unit. Bonne does a lot of hard work and allows space for Bim to excel. He had the ball for the second penalty but classily gave it to Bim to get his hat trick. I thought Wind struggled a bit and it was a game for Gus as he his a better attacker whereas Wind excelled at Rochdale where we needed a better defender. Disappointing to concede 2 more quite late, both good finishes from decent crosses. We are in the hat and that is all that matters today.

CAN 6.5
Taylor 7
Crowther 7
Ralph 7.5
Wind 6
KAF 7.5
Miley 7
Husin 6.5
Bridge 5.5
Pepple 9 MOTM
Bonnie 7

Waldron 5.5
Morton 6.5
Coker 5.5
Walker 6.5
Golding 5

Bim Pepple, easy MOTM pick and far too good for us, let’s enjoy whilst he is with us. Well done to Brentwood for hosting although they made it easy for themselves by limiting our numbers. Programme was a fiver, jeez, thought the pitch played really well for an artificial surface. Good to have some selection dilemmas for the squad going forward. Hartlepool at home will not be easy and we desperately need a home win before a tough trip to York. UTB

That header from Wind was over the line. You can tell by the backspin bounce and the reaction of their keeper. He also picked out Pepple for his first two goals. If that's struggling I can't wait till he has good game.

I was working yesterday so was unable to even listen in on the wireless to Auntie Beeb's commentary. So my sole view of the match has been through the occasional quick dip into the SZ Official Match Thread during the match and this thread.

So I'm in no position to give my opinion on peoples performances and the match overall. Instead I'll ask a question: Shouldn't we be concerned with the fact we conceded 3 goals against a Team, which with all due respect to Brentwood, are little more than a park team?

He did Rochdale away and yesterday. Not sure what he did wrong yesterday. Attacked well and got two assists and unlucky not score. He struggled a bit early doors but so did many in that first half. As you say can’t wait for him to play well 😂

Don't normally do ratings but some performances were on different levels for me...

CAN 5
Taylor 4 - tons of errors
Crowther 3 - struggled to cope
Ralph 7 - solid and good going forward
Wind 6 -
KAF 7 - lots of energy
Miley 7
Husin 6 - looks afraid in final 3rd
Bridge 6 - final ball needs improving
Pepple 9 - please sign him
Bonnie 4 - very poor

One of them games which we made hard work of. We are nowhere near good enough at either end of the pitch. Conceding soft goals and missing easy chances (apart from Pepple). Take him out and we could have easily lost that game. When he went off it changed the game.
I know football is all about opinions but how on earth does Bridge get a higher mark than Taylor, Crowther, Bonne, Collin and the same as Wind who got two assists. Bridge was dreadful. I love the lad but he is so far off his game at the moment and the penalty miss summed him up.

It’s a valid question but the memory of Aylesbury away is perpetually stashed in my brain.

You can see from the TV highlights that Brentwood were much better than a park team. Their striker Ogunleye is worthy of playing several divisions higher. They played some nice football, they weren't just a kick and rush outfit and were good value for their three goals.

Bear in mind that several National League teams lost to lower division opposition yesterday. Halifax lost to Basford, Fylde lost to Kidderminster, Maidenhead lost to Slough and Altrincham only beat Macclesfield on penalties.

Got to say watching Diversitys replay of the game Brentwood looked far better than any Sunday team, tried to play a good brand of football, And i think that young striker is well worth a look at, Give credit where its due they never at anytime gave up and the manager can rightly be very proud of his lads, they gave us a game was no walk in the park 10-1 this time .Good luck to them for the rest of the season hope they can clinch promotion .

I agree his way short of his best he can still do the basics right and showed for the ball linking up attacks. The guys which managed lower scores struggled to control the ball and pass. Crowther was second best against a striker levels below and I don't think he won 1 ball which went in our box.

Fighting hard - Brentwood Town ran Southend United close (Image: Daniel Hambury)

KEITH Rowland has spoken of his pride after Brentwood Town’s memorable FA Trophy run came to an end against Southend United.

Brentwood worked their way through to the third round of the competition before being beaten 5-3 by the Shrimpers.

And Rowland was full of praise for his players.

“We’ve played six games and it just came down to 45 minutes too much,” Rowland told Brentwood Town TV.
“They were strong and had good movement with the ball but overall it’s been a great run.

“We’ll enjoy the day and it’s been a terrific crowd too.

“It should give the players confidence going back into the league as well.”

Brentwood are currently just outside the play-off places in Isthmian North.

And Rowland took heart from how Town performed against Blues.

“The score-line was respectable and in the first half an hour we were very good,” said Rowland.

“We got under their skin a little bit, we moved the ball well and we were well worth our first goal.

“We switched off a little bit for theirs, they got back in the game and put us on the back foot.

“They’re a good team and they’re three leagues above us.

“I said to us to stay in the game and we did that for 45 minutes.

“But at 2-1 down against Southend it’s a mountain to climb.

Away victory - for Southend United at Brentwood Town (Image: FOCUS IMAGES)

By Chris Phillips@cjphillips1982Chief sports reporter.

SATURDAY’S all Essex FA Trophy tie started with Storm Darragh posing problems.

But, by the end of the encounter, it was very much Southend United striker Bim Pepple who had blown Brentwood Town away.

The on loan Luton Town forward scored a hat-trick in a 5-3 victory for the Shrimpers in an eventful third round clash.

And, in doing so, Pepple again proved how he is becoming a real force to be reckoned with.

The striker’s arrival was ridiculed in some quarters and questioned in others due to his goal to games ratio prior to coming to Roots Hall.

But that criticism now seems an awful long time ago and the only talk online nowadays centres around whether or not Pepple can be persuaded to stay longer.

Pepple was most definitely the main difference between the two teams at the weekend and showed the all-round game he now possesses.

The 21-year-old has the pace and power to hurt opposition defenders along with the close control to work his way past centre-backs in close proximity.

On top of that, the forward is capable of scoring with either foot and plays with an infectious level of enthusiasm which makes him impossible not to like.

Of course, Pepple has plenty to work on and will be referred to as raw in stereotypical football descriptions.

But the potential is certainly there for him to play higher than the National League.

The forward also displays a refreshing attitude, such as not wanting to keep the match-ball at the weekend.

The hat-trick was Pepple’s first in England.

But while many would have been quick to post their highlights onto social media alongside images of the signed match-ball, Pepple went the other way.

And, speaking in his after-match interview, the forward also revealed he was disappointed not to have scored more than four goals in his last two outings.

Alongside his hat-trick, Pepple also won two penalties at the weekend as Brentwood simply had no answers to his direct style, especially in the second half.

The first 45 minutes was less impressive but Brentwood deserve credit for the way they fought.

Sitting seventh in Isthmian North, 64 places behind the Shrimpers in the football pyramid, Town were definitely underdogs.

But, in Danny Ogunleye, Brentwood boast a dangerous striker of their own and he was again in the right place at the right time to fire them in front early on.

At this stage, it did not look good for Blues, especially with the game being played in horrific, freezing conditions.

The Shrimpers therefore deserve credit for the character shown to get back on top, whatever the level of their opposition and were deserved winners come the final whistle.

Cav Miley scoring his first goal of the season helped where that was concerned and was another plus point for Blues.

The midfielder is still looking to get back to his influential best amid a stop start season and will have been boosted by hitting the back of the net.

The same can also be said of substitute Josh Walker who scored after coming off the bench while Keenan Appiah-Forson and George Wind also did well on their return to the line-up.

But there were also areas of concern.

The Shrimpers conceded three sloppy goals against lower league opposition and will certainly need to improve where that is concerned if they are to kick on during the remainder of the National League campaign.

Other slight frustrations on Saturday were Macauley Bonne not being able to end his wait for his first Blues goal and Jack Bridge failing to score from the penalty spot as he also strives to get back to his creative best on a more consistent basis.

However, these were minor irritations on a day which was simply about avoiding an unwanted upset and getting the job done, whatever it took.

The Shrimpers did just that and will now want to build on that momentum when they get back to their main objective this season – winning more matches in the league.

Despite the weather (it was bad, but not as bad as I feared) it was an enjoyable day out. I thought the setup that Brentwood offered was actually decent and I don't actually think any segregation was really needed.

Onto the game. It's hard to fully unpick the game baring in mind the opposition and conditions. However, conceding 3 goals will really annoy Kev, especially how sloppy the goals were.

The positives were Pepple looking class and Appiah playing with intent. Morton still looked ahead of Miley even with only being on the field for a little while. At ground level, you could really see how good Ralph is. We'd be lost without him imo. He got Crowther out of jail a fair few times.

I thought Wind got done a few times in the first half and it was his foul that led to the first goal. If we are playing a game on the front foot, Gus is streets ahead of him. He looks a real prospect for sure, but he is not on Gus' level yet. That's no criticism as Gus is a top player at this level. Husin is so far away from where he was last season, I really don't know what's happened. I do wonder and fear where Bridge fits in with the current squad. With no Wes replacement, Bridge is looking so lost. Crowther is improving, but there is a difference from him to Kensdale. I think Kev will look to improve that area.

Overall, a good day out and good to be into the next round. I do think our starting 11 is starting to become more apparent the more we see the rest of the squad play. Roll on Saturday in the hope to make it 5 unbeaten.

He's had a calf problem for a while. I said this in the pre match thread...Noor has a slight calf problem that they are monitoring. So it would be sensible to rest him.... He's had it for a while, so in my opinion he needs to rest and recover, as it's clearly affecting his game. But what do I know, they're the professionals.

Bridge wasn’t at his best but still set up the equaliser, both penalties, and what would have been the assist for the assist had Wind’s goal been given.

It’s probably coincidence but both of his missed penalties have been on 4G pitches.

It makes zero sense to play him then. Plus, we have players ready to play instead of him whilst he recuperates. If it was last season, I would understand. We now have an array of midfielders that can slot in until he recovers. Makes it all the more baffling.
