SATURDAY’S all Essex FA Trophy tie started with Storm Darragh posing problems.
But, by the end of the encounter, it was very much Southend United striker Bim Pepple who had blown Brentwood Town away.
The on loan Luton Town forward scored a hat-trick in a 5-3 victory for the Shrimpers in an eventful third round clash.
And, in doing so, Pepple again proved how he is becoming a real force to be reckoned with.
The striker’s arrival was ridiculed in some quarters and questioned in others due to his goal to games ratio prior to coming to Roots Hall.
But that criticism now seems an awful long time ago and the only talk online nowadays centres around whether or not Pepple can be persuaded to stay longer.
Pepple was most definitely the main difference between the two teams at the weekend and showed the all-round game he now possesses.
The 21-year-old has the pace and power to hurt opposition defenders along with the close control to work his way past centre-backs in close proximity.
On top of that, the forward is capable of scoring with either foot and plays with an infectious level of enthusiasm which makes him impossible not to like.
Of course, Pepple has plenty to work on and will be referred to as raw in stereotypical football descriptions.
But the potential is certainly there for him to play higher than the National League.
The forward also displays a refreshing attitude, such as not wanting to keep the match-ball at the weekend.
The hat-trick was Pepple’s first in England.
But while many would have been quick to post their highlights onto social media alongside images of the signed match-ball, Pepple went the other way.
And, speaking in his after-match interview, the forward also revealed he was disappointed not to have scored more than four goals in his last two outings.
Alongside his hat-trick, Pepple also won two penalties at the weekend as Brentwood simply had no answers to his direct style, especially in the second half.
The first 45 minutes was less impressive but Brentwood deserve credit for the way they fought.
Sitting seventh in Isthmian North, 64 places behind the Shrimpers in the football pyramid, Town were definitely underdogs.
But, in Danny Ogunleye, Brentwood boast a dangerous striker of their own and he was again in the right place at the right time to fire them in front early on.
At this stage, it did not look good for Blues, especially with the game being played in horrific, freezing conditions.
The Shrimpers therefore deserve credit for the character shown to get back on top, whatever the level of their opposition and were deserved winners come the final whistle.
Cav Miley scoring his first goal of the season helped where that was concerned and was another plus point for Blues.
The midfielder is still looking to get back to his influential best amid a stop start season and will have been boosted by hitting the back of the net.
The same can also be said of substitute Josh Walker who scored after coming off the bench while Keenan Appiah-Forson and George Wind also did well on their return to the line-up.
But there were also areas of concern.
The Shrimpers conceded three sloppy goals against lower league opposition and will certainly need to improve where that is concerned if they are to kick on during the remainder of the National League campaign.
Other slight frustrations on Saturday were Macauley Bonne not being able to end his wait for his first Blues goal and Jack Bridge failing to score from the penalty spot as he also strives to get back to his creative best on a more consistent basis.
However, these were minor irritations on a day which was simply about avoiding an unwanted upset and getting the job done, whatever it took.
The Shrimpers did just that and will now want to build on that momentum when they get back to their main objective this season – winning more matches in the league.
