Advice on where to live in Essex?????

All depends what you want, the most beautiful parts of Essex, as I'm sure you know, are generally in the north of the county, Thaxted, Debden etc. There are nice parts in most of the areas around the south and equally there are the less desirable areas. Personally, I've always liked Hadleigh, Ashingdon and West Horndon, all still have that "village" feel, not sure on prices though. Shenfield is also nice but quite pricey. As a general prices are fairly static I think, or even falling a little, but again that depends on size of property. Suggest you chuck some figures into Rightmove.co.uk and see what comes up.

My "village" has closed for half day today.....lol

My wife like the idea of Billericay....Might have to put it on the top 5 list

I would also put Rayeligh on the top 5 list. If you want to work in London you have to consider this massively in relation to trains as they aint cheap either! I live in between Benfleet and Ralyeigh and wish I was closer to Benfleet to go on the C2C line so you may want to look into Benfleet for that reason too plus it is a nice area and close to everything.

See when i'm not in exile in Eastbourne i live just round the corner from Golden Cross in Ashingdon, which is now Hockley apparently. or Hawkwell, they really can't make their minds up.

I loved living where I did. I walked 2 minutes to school, I walked less to the park (Magnolia) and you didn't get much trouble at all. Rochford though was another ball game... Always be trouble at some point and The Rec just seems to be a magnet for scum these days.

In terms of prices in Ashingdon at the moment I think you're looking around the 200-225 mark for a 3/4 bed 1 bathroom semi with a garden.

The Golden Cross is in Ashingdon...don’t let them tell you otherwise....I Take it you went to King Edmunds School...Me to, i left in 84…I was in Swaynes.

I heard that the bottom Rec was converted in to a housing estate...where on earth do they hold the firework display now???

It is a matter of where you work, to me, Being city based Nr fenchurch Street , being 5 minutes walk from Thorpe Bay station is ideal.
Mrs FS, however has to drive to Dagenham every day to being East of cuckoo corner is a pain.

A lot of it depends on what sort of property you want and then how much you can pay.

I was raised in Billericay and it was really nice, but I could not afford to live there when I got married. Now I wouldn't leave Southend

Only because the last train has just left. Next one is on Friday :p

Trains don’t run through Vange do they???

they used to thought but once stopped at the station it was then hard to pull out of the station on a pile of bricks!!!

Yep, KES for me...

As for the Rec, Yes it got converted into a housing estate which isn't exactly the nicest place in the world by any stretch of the imagination... and, what Firework display?

Wouldn't recommend Benfleet at all at the moment, it's becoming a kind of ex-East end side of London takeover, and there's massive road improvements planned which are going to bring the whole area to a standstill and there are building plans in addition to every plot of any size being immediately covered with blocks of flats. If we could afford to, we'd be moving out.

When i was growing up in Rochford...every Guy Forks night there would be a Fire work display on Romley Marsh (Bottom Rec)...just outside the entrance to Doggett’s Primary School......

fir about a week before hand folk would take up all there old rubbish and the pile for the fire would get bigger and bigger leading up to the night.

Can someone please confirm this so i don’t think i am going mad!!

Cheers for the heads up Kay

Nothing wrong with Thundersley, I grew up there when it was a village, and it was great place to live.

*awaits usual howls of derision about being an old fart* :cricko:

Benfleet's just dull, really. Typical commuter town.

Thundersley's ok it does still have village tendencies, but there's a lot of kids that just hang around either on the Common or by the shops by the Hart. There's quite often windows smashed at Dark Lane school too. However, it does have one of the best Indian restaurants around in the Tandoori Parlour, still prefer Hadleigh myself locally. Having said that, my sister is perfectly happy on Canvey, so it's all about personal taste. Parts of Eastwood are worth a look too.

That was my first school I was born in Leigh but moved to The Dale at a very young age...I used to love the Glen etc before the builders came in...Now in Hadleigh which is definitely an up and coming area with the Masa Indian Restaurant ..The new Cafe Noir , but still kids hang around the local church at night ...I feel quite sorry for them actually...they have no Youth centres or cheap places to go these days ..the nearest cinema is about 15 miles away.

Having just noticed you live in G69, I'm not surprised! Whereabouts are you there. I used to live in Baillieston/Swinton and still go up there regularly enough to know the area?

Gartcosh, so we're actually out of Glasgow City boundary, (just, we're North Lanarkshire & Council Tax is about 70% of what it would be if the house was 1/4m down the road). Baillieston & Swinton are now reasonably OK, it's Easterhouse & Garthamlock that are the mankier parts of our local area, for some reason Persimmon have bought a huge piece of land plus a large part of Garthamlock & are trying to build an estate of detached 3/4/5 bedroom houses on it (I guess they're gambling on the regeneration the Glasgow Fort shopping complex is having on everything).

Used to also live next to Baillieston in Bargeddie (our doctors/nearest shops were in Baillieston).

cannot believe no one has mentioned Wickford....u can still buy a 3 bed semi for under 200K....

u will feel at home A Wickford has above the average Southend United support as well.....
