I'm informed that we will be signing a forward today. I can't say it's reliable as I heard it in my hairdressers, but it did come from one of the club directors this morning so it may well happen. I don't have a name I'm afraid. I figure if my hairdresser knows so can you lot.

A titbit from a Club director via my hairdresser didn't seem a bad bet, but time is running out for a signing today so maybe it wasn't such a hot link. hey ho!

Anton Ferdinand has just started to follow @SUFCRootsHall on Twitter..... Why would he do that???

Good spot.

He is good friends with Simon Cox, and tweeted him the other day about his goal.

Think he'd be a cracking signing, but I don't think it's likely to happen. Love to be proved wrong however.

As the name 'Ferdinand' I thought I'd look... Kane still hasn't found a club since cancelling his contract at Daggers.

What went wrong there? Do you think there's a player that can be salvaged or is it too late?

I'm sure it could always be salvaged players have dropped out of the football league and then shot back again. But who knows? He was pretty decent for us and did alright for Peterborough at the start. Don't know if his attitude or off field antics changed how he was progressing. I don't know much about it, but I don't think we are the club to take the chance on him. He needs to rebuild lower down and build up his stock again.

This is another wind up surely? Anton Ferdinand surely be on too big a wage to drop to our level. Also isn't he around 6ft tall? Thought the aim was to get CB who is dominant in the air and taller I would think

I am always suspicious of players who are still 'Free Agents' this time of the season. The vast majority have been released by their former clubs last May and have missed all pre-season and are yet go find a club suitable to sign for after this lengthy period of time.
There are obviously valid reasons sometimes why but many others questions asking the opposite why they haven't....

Anton is only 31 but christ we can't afford his wages even if he wanted to come here!
I think he may of been on a similar wage to Cox. It's about juggling figures and deciding what our overriding priorities are. He has yet to sign for a club for whatever reason so he may have to compromise his wage demands.

It worth remembering sometimes players have been on a very very good wage for a while, been careful with their money and in their early thirties it stops being so much about the money but playing regularly for what is left of their career. Now they want to feel valued and therefore reasonably remunerated but its not impossible we could look attractive - and geographically we are probably very attractive. Let's see.

Maybe Anton is happy to just be playing and will take a lower wage to fit in? Perhaps instead of blowing our wad and remaining wage budget on Jay Simpson we'll split it with Anton and a CM with a striker on loan?

I share your concern, Taters123. I think we need a tall centre-back who is at least 6ft 2ins in height. Personally, I would much rather Southend invested in a centre-back like Rawson (Derby) rather than a smaller, more polished defender who will get out-muscled in the air.

I think he is a poor player, at any level. The amount of mistakes he has made.... Reminds me of Titus Bramble, ok when young..... Mugged a living for years somehow....

All this talk of Anton and his high wage demand expectations, but as far as i'm aware, I haven't heard any offers flooding in for him from similar size clubs or larger clubs (or even smaller clubs for that matter).
I wouldn't think he's wage demands would be too excessive, & if they were, there would be no way, we would still be in the running to sign him (if even we are..or ever actually if we ever was?)

After all he's 32 in 6 months, so perhaps he wants to stay local to his family and happily wind down his career, before he moves into armed robbery with Nile?

All jokes aside, I would welcome him to the club & think he would be a great signing on a loan basis until at least January, or perhaps better still until the end of the season. The thought of Ferdinand & barrett as our 2 quality & experienced cb's (also a replacement for each other in the case of injury.. or cover for a right back) which is most likely to happen within the next 40+ games) is definitely a risk worth taking.

However, I wouldn't be best pleased to wake up tomorrow & read in the Echo that Phil signed him on a 4 year contract!.. Don't get me wrong... he's good... but he's no Adam Barratt!!
