Your first away game...

mine was pompey on opening game of season, 95 or 96. andy thomson scored the first goal in england that day, tilly scored before the break and we lost 4-2. unless west ham in the fa cup 3rd was before that. i really can't remember!!

Good Friday, 8th April 1977, lost at Brentford 1-0. We were rubbish and I was embarrassed to hear the Brentford fans talking about our side in a derogatory fashion. It was a strange experience as we were really bad and totally outnumbered.

It was some time before I actually saw us win away from home but my record away from home in the last 15 years or so is pretty good.

Think you were watching a different game statski, from where I was sitting we were diabolical all game and it could have been 7 or 8!! The only chance I remember us having was late in the game when our Dutch sub Peter Durson(?) put it wide, his only appearance in a Shrimpers shirt.
I agree it could of been 7 or 8 but we were all over em for a short period at the start of the game

after that we were diabolical

peter durson, I remember that shot of his that screamed across the box and went out for a throw in

Leyton Orient away

We ran out 2-0 winners

Who let the Abbey out!!!!!!
Ah yes. I remember that day well. You were a young little scalywag sitting in the back of the mini bus watching us lot get hammered whilst you were drinking your coke!

My first away game was Sheffield Wednesday in the cup in the Collymore years!

Orient away 82/83 and we drew 1-1 with Linford who was on loan from Ipswich scoring.

My boys first away game was hullbridge away in a friendly which we won 11-0.

We lost 9 bloody 1,

Still our record defeat.
.... but we did get a fine goal.

(and fortunately the referee didn't notice their 10th goal come out of the back of the net off the staunchions they used to have in those days!)

What a great debut - no wonder you were hooked !

That was about my fourth away game, the first being at Layer Road 40 and a half years ago. Frightening thought!

Oh and it's hardly changed a bit.
We had a keeper called Ray White and if memory serves the Brighton game was his first away game as well. I had forgotten about the "10th goal".

Memories of Brentford 1969? When Gary Moore "scored" and the ball slipped through a hole in the side netting and we ended up losing the match.

It is my masochistic streak that keeps me coming, though not many away games these days.

Maidstone away....double decker bus....Andy Ansah's debut....comedy own goal from Brushy....more sand on the pitch than grass.....a very temporary stand behind the goal (turns out they didn't have planning permission so it was taken down and never used again).....lost.....poll tax riots in London the same day.

That's about the extent of my memory of my first away game.

2-2 at Chester last year, Gower and Eastwood with the goals. Not exactly the best perfomance from the team, but still managed to snatch a point.

Maidstone on the double decker buses was a right laugh, ringing the bell like a bunch of 3 year olds for virtually the whole journey, and then Daisy (Wayne Day) trying to climb out the back to have a go at some Maidstone fans in the car behind... only problem being that we were on the top deck

It doesn't; it was his third away match.

It was unsurprisingly his last match for over two years, by which time he had recovered his confidence sufficiently to fill in competently for a few matches as cover for the absolutely first class Trevor Roberts. A better keeper than both Royce and Samsone.

Was telling Draft Shrimper about Brushy's og at Maidstone a little while ago - magnificent 30-yarder over Sammy's head.....OOPS!

Was only 9 at the time and found it incredibly funny despite our 3-0 defeat.

I always thought that the Brighton game was his debut, but bow to your knowledge there Mick.

Spot on about Trevor Roberts by the way, he was a terrific keeper, and died tragically young. Along with Cawston & Stannard probably the best keepers i have seen at Roots Hall.

I was there too and yes Tilly DID score before the break but if you remember it was (just like the first day the season before at Millwall) in OUR net!

Thommo got both our goals that day past Mart Poom who was making his debut in English football.

Better than Flavs too?

Wiggy Wiggy Wiggy Oi Oi Oi!

My first away game was Ipsh!t in the League Cup 2nd round, September 87 I think it was (may have been 88). I only remember 2 things about it. One was the free kick that they scored from - deflected up off Clarky in the wall and looped over the keeper, up the other end. The other thing I remember is a picture in the Evening Echo of Martin Ling in mid-air jumping over an unsuccessful tackle from the left back - I remember thinking 'if we were that good why didn't we win?'. How naive....

Best away game was Macca last year (I didn't go to THAT Bury game - Dad was mowing the lawn, still unforgiven for that one). Just for sheer adrenalin - all up for grabs, great fans, non-stop singing, outclassed them in every department off the pitch and the best way to win a game with a last minute winner. Best away support I've seen was Cambridge away last year, absolutely magnificent, felt like a home game.

Mine is the 2-0 loss to Oxford at the start of the 2003/2004 season. Embo was crap and we barely looked like having a shot on goal. However the atmosphere and passion strangely managed to create an addiction for me and I go away reasonably reguarly now days.

Leyton Orient in the FA Cup, 1990 I think. Lost 3-2 with Angell scoring both goals for us. If I remember rightly, all the goals were scored in a crazy 5 minute spell in the 2nd half !

i only started going to away games recently due to work commitments but first one would of been

the vetch back in 02/03 season
