Nearly as bad as Barnstoneworth United. But, that was only 8-1, 8 bloody 1.

I've got the shirt.

Barnstoneworth United

The classic line surrounds the fact that Gordon's son's name is Barnstoneworth.

His wife says, "fancy calling him Barnstoneworth."

Gordon replies, "he's got a middle name."

Wife: "Yes. United!"

Mine was Notts County away in about 1987. It was during the dizzy heights of Dick Bates first management and all the way to the game I told my Dad we would win - he advised that as we had been hammered by all and sundry that season not to get too excited.

We took the field with such stars as Chris Ramsay, Eric Steel, Paul Roberts and Richard Young - How could we lose ?

Game kicked off - Think they scored first we equliased soon after via Donut. I looked ay my Dad and told him it was our day.

We proceed to lose 6-2 and we got lost going back to the station which seems impossible looking back as it is one road.

Happy Days

My first game was Gillingham away in the old 1st or second division cant remember which. We won 2-1 after being 1-0 down and regis coulbalt scored the winner in the 90th minute to send the travelling army into a frenzy!

The '91 game away to Derby when we won 2-1. At least that's what I think, was it the last one we played at the Baseball Ground?

All I remember from it is looking up at the home end stands and seeing that massive black ram on top, and it's just a picture in my mind. (I would've been 4.) Proper glory hunter after us getting promotion.

vs QPR at Loftus Road in our 1996/97 relegation season from div one

we were all over the r's for the first 25mins, Andy Rammell missing a score of chances

after the opening exchanges the r's settled down and ended up trouncing us 4-0

andy harris managing to get on the score sheet with a fine header from 15yds past simon royce

ooops wrong net

We were all over Rangers for 25mins? Think you were watching a different game statski, from where I was sitting we were diabolical all game and it could have been 7 or 8!! The only chance I remember us having was late in the game when our Dutch sub Peter Durson(?) put it wide, his only appearance in a Shrimpers shirt.

Just for the record yes my first away game was a resounding 5-0 win at Aldershot in late 1989....my 2nd a few weeks later was a 5-0 DEFEAT at Gillingham

As we all know supporting Southend is a rollercaster ride!!

BluePartridge I believe the 2-1 win you were talking about at the Baseball Ground was the last away game in 94/95 when Steve Thompson (*and Gary Jones with his goals*) saved us from the drop - Ronnie Whelan signing from Liverpool also helped turn us around that season. I was standing down the side in the away support, fantastic old-fashioned ground that with a great atmosphere.

* think thats the first time I've ever said that!

.... but we did get a fine goal.

(and fortunately the referee didn't notice their 10th goal come out of the back of the net off the staunchions they used to have in those days!)

What a great debut - no wonder you were hooked !

That was about my fourth away game, the first being at Layer Road 40 and a half years ago. Frightening thought!

Oh and it's hardly changed a bit.

I vaguely remember my dad and grandad taking me to Bournemouth for an FA Cup game which, I think, we lost 2-0. I also seem to remember that Bill Garner was playing so it must have been in the 70s. Can anyone provide any further info?

1996 Tranmere away, lost 3-0 on a good friday. Was only 5 at the time, far away place for a wee kid. Reason for it is that my mum has family in Wrexham, so stayed there at the time

Cheltenham away. Last day of the 00/01 season, we lost 2-1 and I believe Mark Rawle scored our goal. I'll always remember being trampled on in the terrace by these big blokes behind me when we scored.

To be honest, i can't recall much about it. I was sitting in the home end but wearing my Southend shirt. I do remember constantly looking over at the away terrace and wishing i was in there. I also remember my Dad trying to explain to the guy behind us that the reason we were in the home end was because he lived in Ipswich and could only get home tickets.
Yeah the farmer boys home support are none too keen on away fans in with them.

I remember I took my ex's brother to an Ipswich v Leeds match the first year of the Premier League, 92-93 as he was a mad Leeds fan & despite being in the family enclosure we still got all manner of nasty abuse, despite him being about the age you must have been for your trip to Portman Rd.

It's almost as if you can hear their brains ticking "Ooo-aar, away supporter, ooo-aar in the home end.   Does Not Compute, Does Not Compute, must abuse alien entity not from roun'ere!!!"
That was like when I went to see Ipswich V West Ham last season. There were loads of WHU fans with us lot and that didnt go down very well when they won.

My first away game was Leyton Orient. Tuesday Night game many moons ago....
