Just seen this, so sorry to hear Rob, the loss of a child is tragic to everyone concerned.
Kay - I've never experienced this before. It was a really short illness and they didn't get much warning. The sudden, shocking nature of it is what really stuns me - and then the awful reality/finality of it.

Seen it happen in schools Rob, absolutely devastates everyone concerned. It is, as you say, the finality of it....the thought that this shouldn't happen to a child.

My broken foot. Did it playing tennis last Thursday night, and I'm supposed to be going hiking in the Lake District starting Friday week.

It's currently strapped up (courtesy of the wife) as I don't want to go to hospital and have it put in a boot for 6 weeks. I reckon with another week's rest, a decent pair of hiking boots, more strapping, and some painkillers I'll be ok.

Here's hoping.

I have to ask, how did you manage to break a foot playing tennis LB?

I was wearing running shoes rather than tennis shoes and slipped on a very slightly wet surface during a cardio tennis session. (This is where the coach puts the ball anywhere on the court and you have to run after it and play the shot, whilst he's already launching the next ball. I chased a drop shot into the net and slipped. I pulled my groin at the same time, but that is OK now!) It's actually a tiny fracture that probably wouldn't even show up on an x-ray, so even though it should take up to 12 weeks to heal, it should be OK to hike on by the end of next week.

londonblue and the tennis adventure - A cautionary tale

How it all began..............

"I've decided to re-introduce myself to tennis. I haven't played for about 20 years so I spoke to the coach at the local tennis club (where a number of my friends are members) and had a knock up with him last Thursday. It went surprisingly well, and I ended up joining in a cardio-tennis session for an hour and a half, which left me blowing out my arse. All the work I do in the gym is endurance based, not short sharp sprints...

Anyway, after that I've got the bug again, so decided I needed to buy some tennis gear. I don't need a racket because mine is still pretty good even if it is 20 years old. I do, however, need a t-shirt and shorts so I went on the Addidas website and ordered one of each. I then saw a box that said "Enter promo code", so I searched the internet and found a code that gave me 10% off the more expensive of the 2 items.

That paid for the postage and packing. Happy days!"

And now, a bit further down the time line and tennis court

The moral of this tale? If you want to break your foot and re-arrange your groin after 2o years away from the sport, then tennis is for you!!

The moral of the story is really, if you're going to do it, do it properly, and buy the shoes first, not the rest of the gear!

Ha - this was lucky for me, having taken up tennis again a couple of years ago after having not played since the turn of the century. The club specified that white tennis shoes were required and as I only had old black football astro-turf boots, I had to go out and get a pair pronto. And shortly after this, the tennis legend 'Tubby Gazelle' was born > https://www.facebook.com/The-Grand-Tennis-Adventures-of-Tubby-Gazelle-547412552043238/< Hope your injury heals quickly, LB.

Not one but two pairs of carpet slippers lined in a row in the middle of Benfleet High Street this morning.

Why?

Things are going to go crazy when the 9/11 Truthers get hold of this.

Pulled a muscle in my back showing MK Jnr how to do head-over-heels...... must remember I'm not 10 anymore...:'(
Lol, when I worked at pre-school, part of my role was to do their "Persil Fun Fit" challenges with the children and the record keeping that involved....even if that meant demonstrating forward rolls or "walking like a crab"!

Cheers. It really serves me right for trying to save money, and not buying a proper pair of shoes. The reason I didn't was that if, after 20 years, I was no good it would have been money wasted. After the first session, which went surprisingly well, I really should have bitten the bullet.

More fool me.

Not hard I wouldn't have thought if you're doing it with nippers?
