Question What are you reading?

One Minute to Midnight by Michael Dobbs, an account of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Recently read his series on Churchill, and his stand alone book The Lord's Day. Would recommend them all, especially The Lord's Day which caused such a stir when it came out, the powers that be felt moved to review and change the security measures taken during the State Opening of Parliament.

Currently reading Cold Granite by Stuart Macbride.

Found some cracking freebies on the Kindle, including one that I'm eating up right now, Halloween Jack and the Devil's Gate by M. Todd Gallowglas. Takes some of the lore about Halloween and makes a crackingly funny and interesting story involving the Devil and his demons breaking out of Hell and taking over the world.

Next up is The Hobbit in prep for the film next month, then Harry Potter 2 and 3 as research for my dissertation, then back to the freebies, should be able to finish up a few before Christmas, when I take my annual excursion to literary Chicago and check in with my favourite Private Investigator Wizard, Harry Dresden.

Different Michael Dobbs (born in Belfast but now a US citizen), but will check out those books at some point!

Nearly at the end of the Game of Thrones series. Passage looks Interesting. The Stand is my fav book and I have seen them compared. Either that it might give The Girl With.... Books a go. Still waiting for the next Deaver Rhyme book to come out.

Somebody at her work gave Mrs Drastic all of the Twilight books :stunned:

She got halfway through the first one and promounced it shallow nonsense. I knew I found a good 'un.

Da ****? Please explain.

In other news, I've just started 'Rough Ride' by Paul Kimmage.

Doing a creative writing course for a start, and the actual topic is how much more adult YA fiction is becoming these days (see Hunger Games, Twi-*****, etc). As one of the most popular book series of recent times, I thought it'd be good to use as exemplars.

Drastic - as your missus presumably isn't a 21-year-old sad act that comprises most of that woman's fanbase, I should bloody well hope she didn't like it! How the films have done so well I've no idea...

Hmm. I'll let you off then. I think.

I'm your Man.The life of Leonard Cohen by Sylie Simmons.Supposed to be the best biography of LC on the market.Certainly the best one I've read.

Just finishing "A Century United" after owing it for a couple of years - Over the years apparently our club has suffered from a lack of funds , difficulty sorting out a decent stadium, dodgy chairmen and lack of consistent form - i'd never have guessed!.
It is however a great book with excellent season -by- season summaries and a brilliant page of Colin Murphy notes that will take a number of re-reads before you realise that he could have made his point in about 5 words.

Great read as you say.Met the author a few years back at our away cup game with Saints, IIRC(or was it the league cup game with Palace)?:cricko:Anyway let's hope we can make the third round this year.

Just picked up "Credo" by Nasally Congested , Spitting Image Stalwart Sir Melvyn Bragg. It's nearly 800 pages of small print. By the time I finish the Internet will probably have been usurped by some type of ESP thought process of communication. So you'll probably know what I think of it before I do.
