Waste Of Money

I think you're memory's palying tricks. Weren't we pushing for promotion to the Prem with the post Collymore teams on more than one occassion (only to be derailed by Jobson)? Didn't we sell Otto for £800k? Didn't we sell some of the other post Collymore signings for big money and/or profit?

Quote[/b] (Murkey_Mouse @ Jan. 20 2006,10:15)]Dave Webb is one of the biggest wasters in 2000-01 season, paying £60K on Rawles, 40K on Belgrave, 36K on Pony Richard & finally 12K on Danny Webb (now giving him an route back to League One when playing in Ryman League was more likely for Danny after being one of Weymouth worst striker EVER! - Weymouth fans told me).  Webb was an great managers in SUFC history which I got repect for, but not in his 3rd spell.

Don't think Dudder was an waste of money, if not for his goals, we would not pick up wins over Cambridge, Macclefield & Kiddy in Feb 2004, if we picked just 1 win out of these lot & an tough March & April to come, we would be startling relegation in our face, so cross him off the list.  Oh, he make an different when coming on for Gray to turn the game around in our faviour Vs Lincoln at Cardiff.
Webb took an overpaid squad, cut the wages and still finished higher than Little or Martin ever did.

The fees paid for Belgrave, Rawle etc were nominal when you consider that they were probably on 500 a week and replacing players on 2000 a week.

Mind you he did sign Flahavan so he didn't get everythign right that spell.

Hold it.  I've arrived now!  Sorry I'm late

"How very dare you" undervalue Hop-a-long Jones.  We paid £10k for him IIRC & when has money been better spent!  That would only have been £500 a time for the 20 goal man.  25 years on (or so it seems) & 4 clubs later he still hasn't reached the 20 goals Rod Norman predicted, in fact the last 3 years have seen 10 league goals!

Personally I thought Marsh did as little as possible for us & managed to reduce his level of play as required.  I really didn't rate him at all.  Close call between him & Poole though for the higher value players, but I thought Poole had a few reasonable games when Fry was around.

So you're saying that Marsh didn't have any reasonable games?

Its all about opiniosn I suppose. IMO he's the best player I've ever seen wear the blue shirt - better than Whelan, better than Powell, better than Collymore.

Even better than Tes....

Incidentally, Flavs has been superb recently... as in playing like a proper goalie. His handling & anticipation against Brentford were top notch.

Surprisingly... no.

Happy to credit Flavs when it's due... and he has been sparkling, recently - no question.

Otto was a great signing I'm not denying that at all, as was the likes of Lapper, McNally, Byrne and Jonathan Hunt post-Collymore. What I am objecting to is the likes of Poole (in particular), Willis, Boere, Rammell, Gridelet, Howell, Dublin, Thomson, Jones etc over that period who were quite frankly awful signings for significant fees that culminated in eventual relegation to Division 2 and beyond. We got a massive fee for Collymore and (minus the £800k for the South Stand) if that money had been spent better we'd have done a lot better than we did post-Stanley. IMHO some of the signings Fry made were crap, yet Fry's management ability belied that and kept us fighting for promotion against the odds. This is given credence by the fact that as soon as he jumped ship for Birmingham and Taylor replaced him we slumped to 15th that season and only just survived the drop by the skin of our teeth the following year.

We know when Darryl's playing well by the absence of his fan club on here.

I just wish he'd stand up during a game occassionally.

I thought that compared with what I thought he should have been capable of given his pedigree he was a poor example, but like you say it's all about opinions.

Of course he's absolutely nowhere near the worst player I've seen at Southend, but I interpreted the thread as being about Value for Money.  If you think Marsh was better value than Lord Powell then I'd disagree, but then I'd also disagree about him being better overall as well.  Same with Sir Stan, as both of those improved the club and improved with the club.  Marsh I felt went through the motions & probably cost us a lot of money to boot in addition to the £1/2m.

And although perhaps a flawed barometer, given that Pointless Neville has more caps that for example Sir Geoff Hurst

, at least Lord Powell (overlooked for far too lomg) & Sir Stan got a few Engand caps between them.  Marsh to me is not even on the same planet!

Fully agree, Pete. Marsh is my MOST disliked player ever because in my opinion he just went through the motions and appeared contemptuous of both the club and the fans.
