Waste Of Money

Thought that was Boere?

Poole - biggest waste of money in terms of transfer fee paid.

Boere - biggest waste of money in terms of wages paid.

The thread was about the former...

Quote[/b] (statski77 @ Jan. 19 2006,21:17)]Following on from my post earlier about paying money for Tony Richards

Which player do you feel has been the worst for the transfer money we have paid for them

My Top 3

1: Gordon Connelly - £50k for 45mins work, oooh but what a 45mins they were

2: Tony Richards - £36k for 1 good game (Angell Delight called him god after that game against Halifax)
I believe when we went back to barnet for Mark Gower a couple of seasons later they felt that they had ripped us off once so gave us gower at a discount price
hmmm £25k for Gower and £36k for Richards?
rock.gif

3: Martyn Booty - can anyone quote the figure here I know it was something ridiculous, too much money for a left back playing in div 3, oh hang on a right footed left back in div 3!!

How we can only look back and laugh
laugh.gif
We only actually paid £25k for Booty so I don't think thats too bad personally.

Hands-down winner has to be Gary Poole, £350k for that waste of space - and for a RB as well! Outrageous waste of money.

Andy Rammell surely has to be up there too IMHO, I liked "Rambo" but when you consider he cost us £150k PLUS Dave Regis who I thought did extremely well for Southend United then for me thats a waste. Also I believe we paid Barnsley £150k for Phil Gridelet......oh dear.

For those who say Marshy was a waste at £500k though I think thats incredibly harsh. Marshy always gave 100% and consistently showed his quality for us bit I personally feel he was severely handicapped by the quite frankly awful players we had around him at that time. If Marsh had been in a decent side he'd have looked a snip at £500k, unfortunately for him he was always 2 or 3 moves ahead of everyone else in terms of footballing brain. Still easily the best passer of a ball I've seen in my 18 years as a Shrimper.

Gary Poole
Tony Richards
Graham Jones
Barry Conlon
Lars Unger
Graham Bressington (for THAT penalty miss alone)
Barrington Belgrave
Lee Nogan

Just a few that spring too mind, I think i may have made a list of potentially worst all time players instead though, never mind!.

Gary Poole actually looked alright in his first season. It was once Barry Fry left that he lost interest and was looking for a move away. That said, only Barry Fry would have paid 350,000 for him.

I'm amazed we were never investigated for bungs - Poole for 350,000, Jason lee 175,000, Tommy Mooney 100,000 Ricky Otto 100,000 all vastly inflated prices. Otto and Mooney at least had potential, but both were essentially reserve team players when we signed them.

Despite all that, the actual biggest waste of money is Keith Dublin.

We swapped future premier$hite player Tommy Mooney plus 100 grand for Keith bloody Dublin.

Just because he played up front once or twice (mainly to get him away from the defence) does not make him alright.

How Spud was ever let near the England manager's job after that transfer I'll never know.

OK letting Mooney go was a dire mistake, and I've banged on about it ever since it happened - but that wasn't Dublin's fault, and it didn't make him a bad player. He was only ever going to be an average squad player, but we have had so, so much worse over the years - he really doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as some of the leeches who have drained the precious blood of Southend.

But nice try, HKB!

Richard Young has to be one of the worst players I have ever seen in a Southend shirt, added to the fact that he was signed by Dick Bate. So he gets my vote.

Honourable mentions for Gary Poole, Tony Richards, Billy Kellock & Alan Foggon.

Perhaps not the biggest waste of money but I thought Andy Thomson was massively over rated whilst with us and didn't do nearly enough to justify the £250,000 transfer fee.

Controversial but there you go.

Did we pay any money for him ?

... and he ended up captain
sad.gif
Nah Hatter paid us, one i forgot from that era was Chris Turner ex Cambridge said it all really.

Dave Regis and Roger Willis. Swapped for our record signing and our most promising prospect (and future Premier$hite player). And they were both hopeless.

Yeah Regis scored a few goals, but they were all the same goal (Whelan hitting the ball over the top for Regis to run onto).

£350k+ for a posing gimp tw&t.

I hated him with a passion.
Spot on...

£350k I thought we were getting a future England right back.
So happy with signing I had "POOLE" on the back of my shirt.

As the season went on I realised he was sh!t and for a laugh my Leicester supporting brother decided to remove the L & E from my shirt. Hence couldnt wear that one again.

Hated him so much by the end.....Total sh!t...

Smiffy my son.

A) Lars Unger was a loan and didnt cost us money other than his wages

B) He wasnt that bad - Single handidly ran the midfield vs Orient in the 3-0 win.

C) Graham Bressington was a class player who scored a lot from the spot and was unlucky to miss at Notts Co.

I think your comments are a tad unfair....

I think you will find Orient fans were disgusted that Otto had been let go for so cheap, as IIRC they had just sold Whitbread (?) to West Ham and were told that would be the end of the sales....they werent too bothered about this as long as they kept Otto.

Mooney was one of the best prospects in the lower divisions and was regularly Scarboroughs top scorer.

Lee was massively overpriced, but then I dont think you can say it was the biggest waste of money as we sold him on (for a profit?) Likewise Barry Conlon went for a similar amount we paid for him.

Also with Marsh, we paid a huge outlay but got a class player....any debate about £300k for Fallon or Holt puts the price of guaranteed class for Marsh in perspective. Also we received an insurance pay out so didnt lose out any money on him.

From recent times, the £40k on Belgrave, who then went on a free, and to a lesser extent the £40k on Dudfield are the main purchases I can think of where we lost a fair amount of money on someone....

Also, Tes's wages for 4 years, being amongst the highest in the club, were a complete waste seeing the 'potential' never came to fruition..

Not just a profit, we practically doubled our money in less than a year.

Christ knows how or why.

And?

I liked Regis, can't believe we gave him to Barnsley PLUS cash for Andy Rammell.

Don't forget we also gave the Derek Payne as part of the deal!!

Not controversial at all, for £250k you'd expect a half-decent decent goalscorer and in truth Thommo wasn't much better than Gary Jones.

You see it is only now we realise how much of the massive final Collymore figure of £4.2m was thrown away on these players, the management teams of that 4 or 5 year period have a LOT to answer for
