The Shrimperzone rule when discussing transfer targets is to speculate about any player who has previously played for us, before actually talking about realistic signings.

Don't think we have had a better defensive midfielder than Grant since he left. Would get in my League 1 team for what it's worth!

I like how he's tried to match his outfit with the scarf.

Without even a slightest doubt we knew he was available and Anthony's agent would have made sure of that. When he watched the game verses Stevenage he answered the question about are you coming back with a 'that's down to the chairman'

It not likely we would have been outbid materially by PV and there is a strong likelihood he would have preferred to be back in London and come back to us. Conclusion therefore is most likely no we were not interested. Personally I would have been but that's without seeing the target list we do have (and that's the problem- the answer depends on something we don't know & hence we would be choosing him over)

Anyone else bored of not signing anybody now? I know people will say there's loads of time and that, but I just feel like every time I load up Twitter a League 1 side has made yet another signing! Be interesting to see the number of signings each club in L1 have made!

I am and I was trying to look for a list of the league one clubs and see if we are the only one not made a signing?

I saw that Pompey signed Adam McGurk. Would have loved to of signed him.

Hi Lenny
Since 1st June 40 new players have been signed up to our league, just to confirm again how slow we are at ever doing anything
Leading the way is Shrewsbury with 6, then Blackpool 5, Burton 3, Bury 3, Port Vale 3 Oldham 3, Colchester 2, Gills 2, Barnsley 2, Millwall 2, Doncaster 2, Rochdale 2 Scunthorpe 2, Peterborough 1, Wigan 1 Chesterfield 1
Only 8 clubs not made a move? What do you think?

I'm pleased to see Swindon aren't in that list. As they are in the same boat as us and had the extra games to play.

Anyone else seen that Rory Fallon is on trial at Scunny with view to a deal.

Take the point about play offs, but even more annoying that the 3 other clubs gone up with us have snapped up 12 players between them, obviously getting ahead of the curve, lets hope none of em can match our signings to eventually come

I can see to an extent in certain positions why Brown is holding off. He needs to know who will be here regards Timlin, Thompson, Deegan and Prosser but not having signed a striker yet is worrying.

I can see that, and so totally blame Timlin for doing things all at the wrong time , like going to gaol and getting married!

More seriously we here about how difficult it is this time of year with people away etc, but if thats so, how come 40 have got signed up already? Also lets say we only made £400k from all the Sky money , the play off monies and going up money, couldnt we have sEttled just a couple more internal contracts by now?

Unless we were interested in any of those 40 then who cares?

It is of no impact whatsoever what any other club is doing. We have four or five players to sign and they have to be the right ones. We also have a huge amount of time. If we were playing tomorrow then I'd be worried.

Well they are 40 players we now have no chance of signing, regardless if we were interested or not. Theoretically, the better players are signed up earlier (or on pre-contractual agreements).

Hurry up Phillip!!

Is this the case? If I were an agent I'd advise my best players to hold off agreeing terms. If there is demand from multiple clubs then you can drive up the price by waiting. The second you sign is the second you can no longer negotiate.

There is obviously a point at which this ceases to be the case - when squads are settled etc - but I don't think we're at that stage that.

Not sure I can quite agree with that Beef. Most managers as the figures indicate want to get to shape and settle their squads as quickly as possible. They can then trade if needs be in any bargain buys later. Getting em in early can also help with fitness regimes, getting to know them, helping players settle down in the area etc.
I fully accept that if you suddenly pull off 5 great signings it wont make a difference to whatever other players have signed. I just think there is a bit of a concern Southend tend to leave it late and that can mean the pots smaller and it gets harder, unless you can get in on the loan market. Clearly throwing the dice later may give you an edge if you time it right?
Last year we left it late. Our key signing s were Barnard, Coulthirst and Weston who made it to the trials. We are more than halfway through to the seasons start and we cant even wrap up a couple more internal contracts.
I still think there is Time, and not pushing panic button at all, but B- could do better
