Mark Jones was a youth team product. Full-back IIRC. Think Michael Gonzague, Danny Foot, Scott Ashenden, Ron Fearon and all those youth team products in the 90s who'd appear in the team photo one year, maybe get a fleeting sub appearance and then never be heard of again.

ps I have no idea why you would have mentally blocked out Grimsby away that season.

Well thanks all for the history lesson on Jones and Smith ,but i thought this was a transfer rumour thread. Oh Mr Napster does your spreadsheet list the date i debut at Roots Hall for Southend United Colts , i can tell you it was 1961/62 against Arsenal youth team we lost 2-0.

How many more do we realistically think we need to bring in? I expect we’ll see some trialists during pre-season. But for me, we still need
A keeper. If Ralph and Elvis stay then we’re fine for fullbacks, perhaps one more centre half, a winger. If ANG and Holmes go I’d argue perhaps two more. A creative midfielder and two strikers (if akinola leaves)?
but that might be a bit overkill.

Certainly one permanently. Perhaps a loanee as well.

Obviously keeper is the main priority at the moment, other than that we'll probably end up getting youngsters on loan one at centre-half, one who can play up front or on the wing, maybe even a centre-mid as well. Maybe another experienced forward as well. How soon any more permanent signings come in my depend on how quickly any one departs.

It'll be interesting to see which of the out of contract players (Bwomono, Demetriou, Holmes, Halford and I suppose Oxley and Dieng although they would be a major surprise) report for pre-season in a week and a bit's time.

League clubs have already began reporting back so their options will be starting to get clearer.
