A Bit of Fun Transfer Rumours Thread (Potential New Signings)

So a 30 year old is a “senior citizen”
28 is “peak”
I don’t care how old- I dare suggest that Murphy at 30 might, just might, deliver more than 26 year old Brandon Goodship
In fact I would be very confident a 34 year old Cox would as well.
This obsession with age is bizarre- I assume the guy from FGR at 30 is a senior citizen to be avoided at all costs too?
I would not doubt that Murphy will likely have much more impact that Goodship had.
Having seen Cox on TV playing in Australia I would not be so confident about his ability to contribute over a season.
And of course, as I said in my original post, there are some players who age better than others. And I would agree that some positions are kinder to older players than others.
There is a reason why there are fewer players playing professional football in their thirties than in their twenties and why there are few playing in their forties. This is undeniable.
Decline in a player is not always easy to predict and the danger is you might not end up with the player you thought you had signed. Not a good situation, especially if the player is on high wages.
Perhaps all of older brigade we have signed will all have injury free seasons, play regularly and be super effective on the field as we storm back into the Football League. But that will not change the fact that there are risks attached to signing older players.

You need experience, you need leaders, you need to sprinkle in some youth with fearlessness that can be guided but can come up with some goods over a 45 game season.

Most of all, and someone mentioned gelling earlier in the thread you need to be willing to die for each on the field. Getting them signed early, getting them put through a bastatd of a pre season together will allhelp build that siege mentality from day one for promotion.

Who cares if more are 30 than 23.

If you're good enough you're old enough or in the case of a couple of early signings and some rumoured interest if you're good enough you're young enough

I think thats a fair and well reasoned response, however on the BALANCE OF Probabilities weighing up all the research about age do you think it wise to significantly pack your squad with a large troupe of older players? to build for the future ?

I am arguing for balance and fear another relegation battle unless we can bring in some more energy at dare I say that peak level and build on that
Is our aim to build for the future, or to build a side capable of getting out the National League in 1 or 2 seasons? Surely it has to be the latter.

I’m not too bothered about age but admit to being a bit disheartened if I see lack of games and injuries in their recent CV. I can’t think of a player where taking that risk has worked for us. I’m sure there are though.

Yes this is the sticking point for me as well on reflection, if we were signing older players that hadn't played much over the last 2 or 3 years then it would be bad flashbacks of the the mess that brown left behind first time round.

The names so far seem to have played decent amounts of football and are each bringing things to the table

Interesting that Ron said one of our targets was due at the ground yesterday to negotiate terms, but "we were let down" - wonder which one that was? Murphy, Dunne, Bridge or one of the others?
