A Bit of Fun Transfer Rumours Thread (Potential New Signings)

He is the boss, it's he who makes the calls . If in the end it goes pear-shaped it's he who will carry the can. I would think that, at the very least, play-offs will be needed otherwise I doubt he'll be around for his second year.

This early summer heat has got to a few already. Older players earning more is a total Zone myth. Oxley was offered £1000 per week, which is what AB was on in L1.

As for Brentford signing local talent. They did away with their academy but just like Peterborough they sign other peoples talent. Brentford have about 6 or 7 English players in their squad. I'm sure they have more Danish players as thats there owners other interest.

Trying to claim we went 7 games at home without scoring because PB signed X,
Y or Z five years ago is of course nonsense. Others had a bigger budget and CP was of course unlucky with his record injuries.....None of which were age related.

You all cried for Ron to do something. So come on, us fans need to do our bit. Or are you just going to sit and moan all summer about every last detail?

26 is the average age of he top 4 sides finishing in the National League
And ours will be very similar - as mentioned in addition to the mid 20s players we already have, and the u23s who are 20-24 next season who we will certainly use- possibly the likes of Clifford, Egbri, Walsh, Kinali and Rush quite regularly - there are those in their mid 20s we are looking to bring in - this really is only an issue if we are desperate to try and make it one- and even then when we look again at the comparative age of our squad at the beginning of the season it will be demonstrated to be a non-issue all along.
Let’s just wait and see where we end up

Of these Jack Bridge has just hit 25, Cordner is 22, Hart is 24, Hobson is 22

So just one in mid twenties then

You need to be a little careful with your facts

Only 3 players aged between 25 and 28 currently.

Nobody has suggested their is an endless reservoir of talent in local non league, although Steve Tilson certainly thinks its the way to go and their are a few, but got to admire your desperate attempt to make and exaggerate the point
So we are now saying Bridge, Cordner, Hart and Hobson don’t count because they are too young?
It is absolutely PB won’t win whoever we sign- everyone is going to be too young or too old- I don’t really care what age they are 19, 22, 25, 28, 32, 35 if they are good enough? Who cares really? The pre-occupation with age is not mine. In the end we will have a balanced squad with an average age similar to the top teams this year- a fact important to some but not to me. I would rather have a good 22 year or a good 31 year old over a bang average 26 year old every day of the week? Why does it matter so much?

Whilst he can talk bollox (can't we all) PB has achieved more as a player, coach and manager in professional football than the last lot put together. RD has for years overseen the most successful youth programme in the clubs history including spotting and developing other clubs cast offs. We have for the first time in years a CEO with league experience. We are in the National League. The new management team looks beyond what we could reasonably have expected.

Is there any evidence to suggest that a squad top heavy with players aged over thirty does well in the Conference, or, this is a way to gain promotion?
I suspect not otherwise the average age of teams listed here would likely be far higher.
We cannot ignore the fact that there are risks involved in signing older players. Decline in performance (which can sometimes be very steep and sudden) would be the greatest risk followed followed by injury proneness. It also tends to take older players longer to recover from injury.
It is entirely possible to sign players over thirty who are able to maintain a good standard of performance and avoid injury. Possible but not easy.
The more older players you sign the greater the chances will be that one or more of them will find their age suddenly catching up with them. This increases the chances of bad outcomes.
In recent years we have this seen this happen at Southend more than once.
My other concern is the cost of signing older players, as, if we are to believe what we read, they are often the highest paid. If they play less and their performance drops this seems to be poor business.
At the height of what I call 'Stan Fever' I did watch the zoom call. I seem to remember Tilly commenting he was amazed at some of the salaries we had paid in recent years and he followed this by saying something to the effect he thought there was no shortage of local players of a good standard available and they could be signed at a lesser cost than the 'names'.
Do others believe that to be true? What effort do we make to scout local non league players with a view to finding new recruits?
When PB was reappointed as manager I was not impressed. This is because I believed that long after he left following his original stint with us some the Club's ongoing problems could be traced back to the cost and quality of the signings he made.
He is now our manager and I wish him the best of success although I believe his preference for 'Dad's Army' types is not the best way forward. I hope I am wrong. And if older players are to join us please let their salaries reflect the risks involved in signing them.
And lastly, please not too many. Can we not sign at least one two players in their early to mid twenties?

I thought I'd take a quick look at the main players for the team that won the National League this season - Sutton United. Here's their top XI by league appearances.

GK - Bouzanis 42 league appearances, Australian, age 30
Midfielder - Eastmond - 41 league appearances, ex Col U, age 30
Midfielder - Beautyman - 39 league appearances, ex Posh and Stevenage, age 29
Forward - Ajiboye - 38+1 league appearances, age 22
Defender - Barden - 36+2 league appearances, age 28
Forward - Olaofe - 35+2 league appearances, age 21
Midfielder - Milsom - 35+1 league appearances, age 34
Defender - John - 35 league appearances, age 27
Forward - Bugiel - 34+3 league appearances, age 27
Defender - Goodliffe - 33 league appearances, age 21
Midfielder - Randall-Hurren - 22+2 league appearances, age 24

It strikes me that they had a pretty settled side, only a couple of kids in their main starting XI and only one (Milson) seriously the wrong side of 30. Most are in their mid-late 20s.

So 3 30 and sbove
4 20-24 (or u23s as we call them)
And 4 25-29
Let’s set that benchmark and the compare our starting elevens next year and see how different it is
In the end of course it the results that matter.

Injuries are what you want to avoid. Most successful sides are settled sides. Of course we have had our share of bad luck with injuries in recent years but we loaded the dice with our recruitment.

I'm fairly happy with the names being bandied about right now and the activity of the club since the season ended.

It is very, very, very early days. Most decent players out of contract will be sitting back waiting for the best offers to come in. No decisions yet. Some players will be moving now but it will be later in the summer when things really get moving.

Someone like Joe Martin (released by Stevenage) might fit the bill, as would Josh Coulson and Jamie Turley (released by Leyton Orient).

No inside knowledge, just looking at localish players from League 2 who have been released.

Turley is 31 and Coulson is 32 so if 30 is correct it’s not them.

Coulson was superb for the Os in the Conference but was injured for a lot of last season and his legs appear to have gone.

Turley is big and tough but prone to mistakes.

If we bring in as many newbies as has been suggested by some, I would have big doubts about our team gelling early enough to mount a realistic challenge in the National League. It would interesting to see how many of the Bristol Rovers team that escaped first time were from their existing players. I can't be arsed to check but I'm sure someone on here could. Teams take time to bed in so getting a good balance is absolutely vital.
