A Bit of Fun Transfer Rumours Thread (Potential New Signings)

Akinde I would have thought
Why do people think it’s Akinde?
we went after him in January and he rejected us but that was MM going for him. what makes anyone think PB wants him or that he would decide to drop two divisions. Would be very surprised and disappointed if it is Akinde. Think his attitude in January was poor so wouldn’t want him now

There’s something about this whole Akinde saga that doesn’t sit well with me, so I’ll apologise for ****ing on everybody’s chips in advance.

Firstly, the wages would need to be sustainable for us, and secondly, it would depend on Akinde actually wanting to play for this club. Both of those factors seem unlikely, don’t they?

We already know that he wasn’t keen on playing for us back in January, and as the story goes, he really messed us about back then.

As for wages, he won’t be coming here on the cheap. Actually, it’d be interesting to know what we’ve offered him now compared to what the deal was in January. I can’t imagine the wages would have increased dramatically, but likely it’ll be a longer deal offering more security. Anything more than a two-year deal would worry me, considering our recent history with older players on lucrative/long term contracts.

I hope I’m wrong, and I hope that if it does come off, he’ll have the desire, hunger and ability to fire us up the league. But at the moment, this feels like we’re treading the same dangerous path we’ve been down time and time again, by throwing money at a player who is on a downward trajectory, in the hope of having one last hurrah.

Next transfer window - 'slyly smirking' signings, maybe jawdropping after that or a signing that will cause shrugging of shoulders. Hopefully nothing that gives a reaction like kentblues seemed to have towards the end of the Dartford match on Saturday.

Probably because it is reported that PB has had talks with a striker that played in Division 1 last season and that Steve Evans, the Gillingham manager, has indicated he will not stand in the way of John Akinde leaving.

Doesn’t mean anything, sure if he didn’t want to play for us in L2, I very much doubt he will jump at the chance of playing in the NL, plus wasn’t he earning around £4K a week, no way we are going to pay that or even half

Akinde does seem at the stage of his career where he will take the best offer which he can get (final payday springs to mind) I must admit I'm not sure he worth the gamble....... He 32 now, so is he going to have the hunger and desire to do well for us? I'm not so sure. If we going to bring akinde in, I would go for season long loan with us paying 50% of his wage. Permanent deal with the wage he would command, not so sure that would be very good business.

He had a last minute change of heart in the last transfer window and decided to give a side destined for relegation a swerve.

A fresh start in a side expected to be challenging is a different option.

GBJ, you raise some good points. We do not know who PB is negotiating with. But if it is John Akinde, I hope he would be on wages that the club can afford and that it does not compromise team building efforts elsewhere.

Personally, I think someone like Mike Fondop, a 27 year old 6'3" striker would be a better fit for a strike-force that included Murphy, Dalby and Rush.

Yep I think I first highlighted Fondop on here nearly a year ago and definitely reckon we should still be considering him. Akinde will probably be effective but I worry about shelling out a lot of wage on him & also the message it sends out when he screwed around with us before.

We offered him 3k a week in January terms were agreed he pulled out very late on

I can accept people having a change of heart, that’s life.

I just wonder how serious he was about signing for us in the first place. He was in discussions with Exeter at the same time, and who knows, maybe we were used as a bargaining chip to enhance the negotiations between them and himself?

The fact that Akinde did not go to Exeter - when they were challenging for promotion - suggests he does not want to move too far from where he is currently based. Apparently, Akinde had a fairly long commute when he played for Lincoln.

At the time I was more surprised at us than him. We were asking a L1 striker on a L1 contract to sign for a club at the foot of L2 for the same money (and even if a 2 year contract that was only 6 months longer than he had). So it can't have been a massive sunrise and we don't know the circumstance- was it more the player getting cold feet, more his agent telling him he was mad?

The problem was we had no plan B which should have been made easier by the fact we needed more than one striker anyway.

the flip side is he was close to coming to us DESPITE our league position in a league lower. If he was attracted to us as a club he wouldn't have even entertained it.

I've just left a prem side and will be dropping down to a team that finished third from bottom in Div 5 last season.

I know it's a very different level and money plays a huge part, but sometimes people just want to be playing regularly in an environment they can enjoy.

If the money is good enough for him, he may sign.
