Here's my scout report on the National League's top goal-scorer: Paul McCallum.
🔹 Technical, physical, tactical and mental profiles assessed
🔹 How he could fit into Southend United's system

A fantastic read, and I’m glad my only reservation about him is something you’ve highlighted.

We press with such intensity from the front, mainly through Cards, but his partner too. Be that Kanu, who really brought into that, Powell, Waldron or Wood.

IF we brought in McCallum, he won’t do that, that’s not his style. Now, if he bags 30 goals again next season, there is no issue. But he has outperformed his xG, so can we really expect him to hit 30 again? 20 would be good.

Would it mean a slight chance in approach? If it’s McCallum & Cards, it’s pointless Cards pressing if McCallum isn’t. Do we press if we play Cards and someone else, but not if McCallum is in the side?

It’s not enough to make me not want to sign him, but I think it’s food for thought at least.

Some serious names released by Wrexham. Could we get a tune out of Aaron Hayden or is he too injury prone to take a chance? Still only 27.

So next Monday Kensdale is with England C, would be a good opportunity to tap up some players lol, Charlie Ruff and Luke Jenkins from Chelmsford are both called up.

There is one comment in there that I believe is bang on the money.

"Feels like this story (like may others) is just looking at the last time and making a lazy assumption though, rather than having any current factual basis." - Mark GRS
Unfortunately not …..I know someone with inside access to Gills who told me that they wanted King Kev about two weeks ago before Clemence was even sacked!

Jack Payne would tear this league a new one
Without doubt the sort of creative midfielder we are missing. Would he drop to NL- I suspect we would be the only club he would for, and I don’t know he strong the pull is. And wages likely to be an issue and at 29 he is still too young to be in the finishing his career at his home club mode…

Played virtually every league game at MK Dons and may very well sign there- and will be not short of offers.

Would be a great signing.

I suspect Kevin wont make any decision until the sale is either finalised or not,, if again there is another wait off a month or two then i believe he will leave, and good luck to him this cannot go on much longer even the players will get tired off it, May 15th has been touted as the date of the final hand over thats 10 days from now lets hope it goes well and the Rat Family disappear down there rat hole never to darken RH again.

Thank you!

Fwiw, I don’t think that he can’t, or won’t press. But if he does, it will be interesting to see if this increase in workload will reduce the number of minutes that he can play, and subsequently the amount of goals he can score.

It may be that we go with two more athletic strikers against the sides where our press will need to be more effective (Gateshead, Rochdale and Barnet, for example).

But yeah I agree with you, really. If he scores enough goals so that there’s a net positive in terms of his goal return and lack of pressing intensity (and he should do, considering the amount of chances we create), then it’s still very worth it. Especially so, when we consider that up-front is the area where we need to improve the most urgently.
