you are spot on. Think what is being discussed is now that we have a bigger squad if he was to be rested then could for example Ralph fill that role. For whats its worth i dont think he will be rested and his stats suggest he shouldnt be. Its going to be interesting to see how kevs uses the squad now and if he is able to change the pattern of play if requried. Something he hasnt been able to do all season. Exciting times ahead
Indeed. Thing is, Ralph is never a central defender and has played his best football imo in midfield.
I'd like to see Bridge tried out as a floating attacking central midfielder set up behind the front two. Cant persist with 3 defensive central midfielders. If Husin cant attack from there, maybe try Bridge or even Cav. Someone has to break the lines, we wont be playing Chesterfield every week and we will have a lot of possession. Players in key areas to find the space to shoot, and having the mentality to shoot.
How much space did Freddy Eastwood need to get a shot off?
One side step and BANG !

The one thing we seem to lack is pace.

None of our side are lightening quick.

Waldron seemed quite mobile and Cardwell isnt a slouch but that rapid sort of pace that creates chances, especially away from home is sadly lacking.

I would say Cardwell is pretty quick. Early season he was chasing long balls down that he had no right to get to
He certainly isn't slow but it's a different kind of runner that I think we need. We don't have a runner who runs with the ball at speed. Players like Amaluzor of Altrincham (who tore us apart) or Sousa of Borehamwood are quick and direct players that go at the fullback with speed and can chop in when needed. We don't have players like that because we play the wingback system but it would be nice to have a player like that on the bench to turn to.

It will be interesting to see the starting XI v Gateshead. A 3-0 defeat provides all the opportunity Kev could need to justify changing up the starting XI. Still, that's a conversation for the Pre-Match Thread when it opens. Agree re: Morton, but I'd probably also start Crowther and Waldron too....
Definately.
We lost on Saturday because we did not attack through mid field.

I guess we hoped that Mooney would be that type of player.

Think Saturday was a one off in many ways. Chesterfield are such a good team and so strong in all areas that it was always going to be tough just like Wrexham and Notts county last season. Games like this Saturday are where our season will be defined. For me our season starts Saturday. 18 cup finals and all that. We’ve recruited well in Crowther, Moreton and Waldron. Each I’m sure will have a part to play. Crowther is a decent size and looked composed when he came on Saturday, Waldron seems pacey and made some good runs and we’ve seen enough of Moreton to know he has lots to offer. With Cardwell and Coker back Kev has some good options and a few headaches. Don’t think we need anymore signings unless a real gem is found

When we sign new players the one thing l think we are all agreed on is they have got to be an improvement on what we have.

The respect for the squad that has got us to where we are this season is unrelenting, but after Saturday for me the one glaring gap we need to fill for next season is a creative player with strength on the ball in midfield. We have several who are close, but not that complete type of player.

We have Cav who is a great ball winner and can recycle possession once it is won and feed a playmaker.

Husin who again can win a ball, and distribute, got a good shot when he decides to use it, but not for me that midfielder who demands the ball enough and takes the game by the scruff of the neck.

Coker who is learning the game and again can lurk unmarked on the edge of the box or ghost into the box and does get goals.

Wes who has the creative edge, and vision, but lacks strength and stamina and is pushed off the ball too easily.

So for me we want a combination of the above, who can dominate from the off, or change a game if introduced from the bench.

I know it's a big ask and even does such a player exist?

Chesterfield have such a player, found in Ipswich's U21 set up.

If we can find out own version Dobra, that'd do for me and improve on what we have in the middle of the park. Yes at the expense of someone, but successful teams evolve and that is where we are now, but not forgetting those who are here and the gratitude for what they have achieved.

100% spot on

We need someone like Callum Powell

Even though loads of you seem to not like him 😏

Hopefully we see him back fully for the whole of next season
We certainly miss his high press , forcing teams to go long from the back , creating a 50/50 ball for us to turn over and get on the front foot.

Might have upset Chesterfields play , but they all looked comfortable on the ball

Absolutely what I have been saying.
After 10 minutes on Saturday Husin went forward to 25yds and instead of shooting he passed it left.
Why can't our guys shoot from a reasonable distance?
We are guilty of this for a couple of seasons.
Tonight, Blackburn fed everything through mid field. So good to watch.

IMO you cannot assemble a squad of young talented players from the leagues below us and expect them to be pushing for promotion in a league where you can probably lose no more than 5-6 games in the whole season.

Perhaps Kev and Co think they can, in which case I trust their judgement 100%, but we are short of experience and squad depth in certain areas. If we want to be the next Chesterfield in terms of performance and competitiveness across the pitch, then IMO you must add some experienced heads for when you hit a difficult patch during the season and need those players who have experienced that pressure before to guide and help the others.

The type of player Shaun Goater was for us, worth their weight in gold for more than one reason.

It's not deviating from any sort of model, it's just makes good footballing sense.
Exactly, its not just what the old heads bring to the 11 on the pitch but what they add on the training pitch and in the dressing room even if they are not selected in the starting line up. We only have Demetriou in that respect.

Nothing wrong with a good old fashioned center half to lead the back line, Someone that gets his head on everything. He may lose his legs a bit but with a mobile CB either side of him will help.

I wonder if we might think about loaning Liam McAlinden in. Can't get a game at Wrexham, and could cover a wide variety of positions including in theory both wing-back slots. Different profile to our current signing philosophy but would add strength in depth.

I think we are two players short of being sorted.

We need a set piece specialist - CP tweeted the other day that we havent scored directly from a free kick in almost 3 years, Thats a bit concerning.

We also need a poacher which I am hoping Waldron will be but not seen him play yet and know very little about him.

Don’t think many direct freekicks will be scored at this level. How many have we conceded from direct freekicks during that time frame?

What is another experienced head going to add that Demi or Dave Martin can’t?

I’m not sure I even buy that this is a young squad. All but a handful are mid 20s and older. Players like Cav Miley and Harry Taylor, Nathan Ralph etc are experienced. Players like Noor and Kensdale may have been somewhat inexperienced two years ago but have played a lot of football since then.

With the exception of Collin, the youngsters (Wood, Coker, Kabongolo, Sandat, Crowther(?)) aren’t starting any more and are limited to occasional sub appearances anyway.
