Transfer News, Gossip & Speculation Transfer Rumours Etc part 2.....2024/25

Transfer news
Any need to be concerned by the "lot of interest" around Tom Hopper from other clubs? Or is this just soundbites from Col U to push any potential ££ up a little bit more (if we're even offering money to Col U)
Surely we're not paying money for a 31 year old?
If Col U want him off their wage bill, that's one thing - but we can't be paying fees for older players like that.

Why not? If it is a permanent transfer and means he’d sign for us over a league rival then it’s not bad business paying £10k for him on an 18 month deal. (All hypothetical).

Supposedly we paid £10k for Danny Waldron and he was on an 18 month deal and has hardly set the world alight.

I don’t think there is any fee involved, we are just trying to help him find a new club before his contract runs out in the summer and of course take his salary off our pay role.

significant moves from Wealdstone over the past week:

  • Will Randall - winger - free agent
  • Taylor Clark - midfielder - loan from Wycombe
  • Connor McAvoy - defender - loan from Fulham
  • Harrison Sonha - midfielder - loan from Cheltenham
  • Alex Reid - striker - loan from Oldham - **Wages paid by crowd funding from section of fan base**
  • Luca Gunter - goalkeeper - loan from Spurs

I can't say for sure, but I would be somewhat surprised if Tom Hopper isn't in before tomorrow's match.

I think it could be a good signing. He's a real pro, a good personality and a hardworker. I think he'll replace some of the qualities that we lost through Cardwell, and I think he'll help the ball stick up top and help to bring more out of those around him.

Also wouldn't say he's "injury prone"!

For those underwhelmed by him, I repeat below what I said in the old thread:

"If the deal isn't right at this precise moment, they may wait until the summer and perhaps try for a short-term solution for the second half of this season. I guess that crossroads will come at some point where they may have to say "ok, we'll revisit the primary target in the summer because his club isn't playing ball, and we'll move onto this target to cover us for the second half of the season""

Doesn't necessarily mean that Hopper is 25th choice or only seen as a stop gap, but it's pretty obvious that he doesn't fit the age profile......but then we know that we've missed out on two striker targets to Shrewsbury and Harrogate in recent weeks.

I think there's a decent chance we'll still get another one or two in, but it's a difficult balancing act. There is a push on for "value for money". What does that mean? I think it just means making sure that signings are good fits (fit the style, culture and squad personality, maybe with the added bonus of age profile and resale value), but they don't want next season's budget ruined by panicking and making the wrong signings now in a desperate effort to turn this season around, and being lumbered with them beyond the end of the season. I imagine anybody we sign on deals that run beyond the end of the season must be players who are seen as ticking as many boxes as possible and being able to contribute beyond the end of the season.

I get all of that, so basically the club have given up any hope for this season and are now concentrating on Next season?

Nope, that's not the impression I get, and they'd be mad to. But I guess there isn't enough money to fritter any away, hence the push for "value for money". And regardless of whether anybody gives up hope, it's a cold, hard fact that value for money is very difficult to come by in January - certainly compared to the summer, anyway.

I suppose they're trying to decrease the element of risk. Remember Stan Collymore said the aim should be for 7 or 8 out of 10 signings to work out to varying extents? You'd have to imagine we're closer to 4 or 5 at the moment?

I don’t see it as giving up on this season, it’s more about giving us the most realistic chance to get promoted over the next 2 or 3 years.

No matter who we sign, we are unlikely to get the play offs this season anyway.

It may make the rest of this season a bit frustration. But if waiting until the summer to find a long term solution in certain areas means we have a better squad for next season, where we stand a much better chance of promotion, surely that’s worth it in the long run?

Other than Alex Reid, none of these are NL or EFL proven so it’s real easy to just sign anybody.

Would be underwhelmed if we signed all of those bar Reid.
