Ok, a decent team being built here...

GK -
RB -
DF -
DF - Bobby Moore
LB - Gareth Bale
RW - Ray Parlour
CM - Nobby Stiles
CM - Bobby Charlton
LW - George Best
FW - Peter Beardsley
FW - Kevin Keegan

More nominations welcome; I imagine the 70s and early 80s could be a rich seam here.

Ronnie Whelan
Mike Marsh
Jeroen Boere
Gary Hooper
Freddy Eastwood
Frank Lampard Snr
Dean Austin
Justin Edinburgh
Spencer Prior
Stan Collymore
Peter Taylor

Don't forget we've had our own fair share.

Did David James (Watford) or Darren Anderton (Portsmouth) play at the hall in 1992?

I definitely saw James play against us in a League Cup game in August 1991. We then played them in the league the following February so there is every chance he was in goal for that game too.

Must have been a few in that Newcastle side we smashed to top the table

Former PNE forward Dave Nugent is prolific at International level, he averages a goal every three minutes for England :winking:

Neville Southall (unfortunately)
Roberto Martinez played for Swansea against us (don't know if he counts as a top footballer)

Am not convinced Bobby Moore played in a league fixture at Roots Hall? His Fulham days were in the old second division, while we were in 3rd/4th. Did Mooro actually play at Roots Hall?

Pele played against us.....no, not that one!!! This one who graced Roots Hall was for Southampton during our last Championship season.

Correct; I took that one on trust. We didn't play Fulham in the league between 1932 and 1982!

Moore out. Anderton replaces Parlour on the back of winning many more England caps and scoring that beauty against Colombia. Bale out as he was an unused sub, Pearce in.

David James in for the moment, pending confirmation (or otherwise) that Ray Clemence played at Roots Hall

Ha! I believe I saw his only England goal here against Andorra.:smiles:

Need an older head to confirm this, but Crewe played at Roots Hall a couple of times during David Platt's tenure there in the late 80's.

Bale started when we beat them 2-1 in 2006, but Pearce is still the better option for LB anyway.
