The EU Referendum

How are you voting?

  • Leave

    Votes: 58 56.3%
  • Remain

    Votes: 45 43.7%

  • Total voters
    103
  • Poll closed .
Of course that is as bad as the £350 million Brexit figure.

The EU is only 9% of our trade. 80% of everything we make is sold in Britain and another 11% to the rest of the world.

Besides we spend £68 Billion more per year in the EU than they do with us. No Business would ever want to lose their biggest customer.

Credit to project fear they have fooled a lot of people. Many people are only voting remain because of fear not because they are happy with the EU.

Exactly. Britain shouldn't want to put barriers in between it and it's biggest customer and in any negotiations the EU will have the stronger hand.

Project Fear of Immigration may have fooled a lot of people, but fortunately people are rejecting it and instead are voting Remain because they realise that on balance the good outweighs the bad.

They are voting Remain because they recognise that we can and have achieved more working together. They realise how being in the EU enhances our influence in the world; they look at how scientists collaborate; the young see how the internet has brought the world closer together, how corporations cross countries and they look bemused at the dinosaurs who want to turn their back on it. The educated look at how the experts across numerous fields keep concluding that the EU is on balance a good thing and wonder why Leave have such an issue with experts? They realise that having a say in the EU is a great thing. They realise that the EU has done great work in workers right, in tackling pollution; they're broad minded enough to realise that freedom of movement across Europe for work and pleasure is a good thing; they realise that our economy has greatly benefited from the EU.

Above all they realise that there's nothing to fear in staying part of the EU and loads and loads to gain.

Sorry Callan.

It's too much effort to answer to cut and paste and format all your questions and it's not worth my time as you've already made your mind up anyway. I'd rather watch the football.

Maybe some time over a pint or two, but it's a really dry subject and you're not actually challenging the factual basis of any of his argument.

1. What the hell has that got to do with the EU

2. The educated huh!......Try being a little less patronizing fella. You come across as bit of a **** to be honest.

3. Something the government WE elect are quite capable of doing.

4. See above

5. Quite agree, it is good. Uncontrolled migration/immigration isn't. And that's exactly what we have. FACT!

6. And can continue to do so once we're out. Trade is trade and a business will ALWAYS go to where the best quality and price is. If you think a country like Germany would jeopardize £46.4 billion of import trade from the UK, or 10.4% of it's total imports, by putting up trade tariffs that would hurt itself then you're seriously misguided fella.

As a family we took the unusual step of on Fathers day of inviting the views of our Kids, so we could take into account their voting preferences in the Referendum.

On paper they are far better educated than us old dinosaurs, however I would question their common sense at times.

Out of 7 kids 2 had already voted by post one to leave and one to remain.

Another had left a postal vote with her Nan who had already posted it off as a vote leave despite the fact she was undecided!

Of the remaining 4 one hadn't bothered to register, and two prioritised going to Glastonbury and wouldn't be voting.

Leaving just the one....who can't vote as she's too young!

All parents and Grand Parents (6 votes), were voting out.

Funny old world, isn't it.

No problem Mate, and yes my mind was finally made up on Sunday.

One thing I can tell you is that despite voting leave, I will be relaxed if the outcome is Remain.

And I will sort out a trip to a Southend match next season, so we can have a beer.

There is a clear and positive association between higher education, and likelihood of voting to remain.

Excellent. Give me a bit of notice as I rarely bother with home games now so will need to make sure I don't make other plans.

Indeed. Age and Education are the two biggest demographic indicators.

The Betfair Remain/Leave market has just ticked over the £50m mark in terms of matched stakes.

Remain trading at around 1.25, Leave around 4.80.

Doesn't make it any the less patronizing

I can see where you're coming from. It's pretty patronising to hear a load of older people saying "don't worry young chap, we know what's best for you" and then voting in completely the opposite direction to you and most of your peers.

However, that doesn't take away from the point YB was making in his post. Younger people and more educated people are more likely to vote remain, and i think it's important to think about why. People who go through higher education spend much of their studies (and future careers) understanding and synthesising information and data, critically appraising and coming to sensible conclusions. Whether you're a scientist, doctor, journalist, historian etc. It seems really daft that both experts and educated people who listen to experts on complex areas such as global economics, immigration, trade law etc are dismissed as nerds/sheep/nazis (thanks Gove). However it's also ccrucial to respect the perspectives of everyone, and appreciate that being educated often comes from a position of privilege, and also to recognise that you aren't going to know everything.

Well its the eve of the vote and after watching dozens of moronic politicians and experts contradict each other and themselves with tired and poor arguments I have finally got to the position now of not having a clue which way to vote.

I was fairly decided most of the way through but the politicians on both sides have totally failed to convince me either way. Thats not really surprising as we have been given a basic choice of stay or leave and the issues involved make that far too simple a choice in a complex situation. I sat through the BBC debate yesterday just thinking both sides were dreadful.

For me neither option is a good one.

Stay and immigration never gets dealt with.
Leave and I just dont see how we wont be weaker as a nation.

Well at least it will be resolved tomorrow and we can move on either way.

Excuse my ignorance, but what does that mean?

Betfair uses decimal odds instead of fractions, you can make money purely by trading on a price rather than outcome if you wish, by laying the price at lower than you backed.

I generally make a couple of hundred quid a month on it.

Excuse my ignorance, but what does that mean?

Hopefully callan's explanation did the trick!

Latest odds are here:

https://www.betfair.com/exchange/plus/#/politics/market/1.118739911?lskey=bannerClicked

Odds at the time of writing:

Remain - 1.21 (83% chance)
Leave - 5.50 (18% chance)

Where it says 'Matched - GBP 53,000,000', that represents the amount of money 'matched' on the market. So if I placed £10 on Remain, then someone else has effectively played bookmaker and taken that £10 bet too. So a total of £20 has been 'matched' there.

Lots of folk play Betfair like our good friend callan does, backing something, then laying it when the odds shorten. So as a rule of thumb, the amount of actual money staked is usually around one fifth of that overall matched amount. Still a big sum!
