The Essex CCC Thread

I guess we can take heart that maybe the wicket is doing something! A few wickets this evening and you never know. Main thing is it's at the very least a very good draw against the best team in the country.

Mickleburgh has increased his FC career average by 10 now! Has he shown much promise before? I see he played for England U-19's, be nice to have a player suddenly blossom into a decent bat for us.

A Warwickshire fan I know was absolutely raving about him, after he made a 70 odd against Warwicks on, I think, his Championship debut. He watches a lot of cricket and reckons he's the best young batsman (or it might have been the best innings by a young batsman) he's seen since Bell was coming through the ranks of Edgbaston.

He lost his way a little after that, not helped by picking up an injury in the latter half of the year.

Durham without Harmy (and Onions) aren't quite the same prospect, but that attack includes two bowlers who were on England duty last winter in Plunkett and Davies, and even without Harmy that is still one of the best attacks in the country. To score 174 against that attack is no mean feat. I thought he might contribute this season, but I didn't expect him to take on a main role like that. Let's hope this isn't an one-off but a sign of things to come.

Sadly, di Venuto has (predictably) come out fighting. Durham 25/0 after 9 ov.

As for batsmen to watch out for, I still think Sam Northeast - now on Kent's books - is an extraordinary prospect. I hope he manages to establish himself in Kent's first XI soon.

Rob Key has said that Northeast will get his chance early this season. He's certainly been talked up as hot prospect.

Durham just lost 3 quick wickets and are now 233-5. Phillips gets Di Venuto for 99 Benkenstein for 98 so they trail by 53 and have just 5 wickets left. Advantage Essex.

The next round of Championship games start today with Essex hosting Lancashire boasting Jimmy Anderson in their ranks. Chambers for Napier is the only change for Essex. Chris Martin is still in NZ waiting for both visa and volcanic ash to clear.

Essex are batting and Godleman is already back in the hutch 7/1.
