A right sided midfielder, can none of our midfielders play there? can wood play there..
The new lad and Taylor would be ok as a centre 2 ..

Your right midfielder is supposed to be the one supplying your forwards from the right. Ideally some pace to get by their full back, maybe some trickery, or even just a decent delivery like Beckham used to do.

Do any of our midfielders have those attributes? Not in my eyes. We haven’t ever recruited a right midfielder or winger in that mould for years, as we’ve never played that type of football.

Taylor would be bullied in a two. Fantastic in a three. No one here has seen enough of the new guy to know.

Who plays wide right in a midfield 4? I really hope your solution isn’t Gus…

Who plays as the two at centre back in either of those formations? I don’t think any combination of our centre backs are strong enough to play as a two.

Having a front three is more “suitable” than a midfielder four that’s for sure.
Whilst I understand the constraints that KM has been working under, your comment (which I agree with) does highlight the fact that imho our recruitment has been pretty poor in that the balance of the squad does not allow different formations to be tried.

To me this suggests inflexability in our approach.

I know that KM is after another CB, unless that is Golding, and appears to acknowledge the lack of pace in our squad.

The lack of creativity, lack of pace and lack of adventure in this squad results in the sterile play that is being served up at the moment.

Will our approach change if we had different players? Who knows?

However I would suggest that the current squad balance and current tactics employed are not good enough for us to get promotion this season which given the lack of a 'stand out' team in our division may prove to be a real missed opportunity.

This was taken from a Southampton FC Facebook post about Russel Martin`s dismissal;

" There is culpability throughout the club. Why was Martin's contract extended last season? Why stick to a style of play to which we are clearly unsuited? Why keep picking the inferior players? Some players are not good enough as you say. Some are good enough to help us achieve a seventeenth position. That is all we have to do in this first season back in the Premier League, but I suggest we will do so with a variety of tactics, including the longer game. Not with a predictable and pedestrian game in the defensive third. It is the insistence on this, that has ultimately led to Martin's dismissal ".

Sound familiar?

But if you plan to play 3-5-2, you would recruit specialist full backs, wingers or wide midfielders. That would be poor recruitment in my eyes.

For me, we do lack pace, creativity and guile in our side. We haven’t been able to select the same back three that hasn’t helped, having players out of form hasn’t helped, but for me it’s getting that midfield three right. We haven’t quite got the balance right.

Maher needs to move on from Husin and Miley. Loyalty is all very well but not at the expense of performances and results. They have both peaked, have slipped back and need a new challenge elsewhere. Our midfield, apart from the much maligned Moncur, who looks up and sees no movement ahead from the other midfielders, is totally devoid of creativity and there is no movement off the ball, no anticipation and no one prepared to gamble. If they occasionally do, the reaction from the bench is sadly predictable with arm waving, cursing and other histrionics. They seem to believe possession is everything but so often it leads nowhere. Now we see Man C's dominance unravelling at an alarming rate perhaps there will be a change of style in the PL which might trickle down to the wannabe Guardiolas in the lower leagues.

I know it's off topic, but a lot of top teams are now changing the way they play including some of the less fashionable clubs, like Forest, Bournemouth,Brighton etc and IMO it is brilliant they are getting back to the old style of fast attacking and it seems it is paying off. I long for the day we ditch the possesion/boring type fiasco we play and get back to real pace football. The top clubs in our league are already there.

We need to be honest with some of the players. Despite their loyalty and past heroics, some are just not at the standard that most fans expect. I genuinely don't believe Maher is the issue

With the exception of Crowther who I think has been great this season I agree with your evaluation of the squad. Frankly I think we are where we deserve to be with this squad.

Moncur is a passenger every time he walks onto the pitch, bad passes, delayed shots and a lack of mobility is evident for all to see. Never have I seen someone live off of their dad’s name like him and I say that with a heavy heart as I loved watching his dad in the past. Bridge for me I love but for him to elevate his performances he needs to play on the right side, I would play him on the right side of midfield, go back to 442 or 4411 and play Walker on the left as when he runs at people they cannot cope with his pace.

Coker and Morton have great potential but they are always looking backwards rather than forwards a killer pass to Pepple who has the beating of most defences at this level.

Bristol Rovers need a new manager as they just sacked Matt Taylor.

Links to KM - will there be interest from either Bristol or KM applying?

Sounds ungrateful, he got them promoted last year.

Clean sheets are worth more than goals. If we want to climb the table, we will do it by being tight at the back. Look at the GA columns for any recent winners of any division in any country. You won't find many that don't have Top 5 defences.

The much vaunted 'clean sheets' philosophy only works if you can score goals at the other end. For example, NL champions Chesterfield conceded 19 more goals than we did but scored 36 more. Of the top 4 division champions last season only Leiceste had the fewest goals conceded.

It's not a philosophy, it's a statically proven fact. You cannot lose games if you do not concede.
Indeed and you cannot win games that you don't score in.

We need a balance of a strong defence which is offset and complimented by attacking flair.

We seem to have one but not the other.

Both are needed for success.

And last season, all of the eight teams that finished above us, scored more goals than we did. Stats bandying often deceives.

I did think this yesterday as I watched the City v United game. First half especially was dull and neither team showed any energy or attacking flair. Maybe the much vaunted 'Guardiola style' has finally had its' day. All this pass-pass-pass play it safe does my head in.

A lot of teams at our level have big physical players and get it forward quickly, we've been caught out numerous times at home. Not saying our 'brand' of football doesn't always work - sometimes it does - I also think yes we've not been helped by out of form players/injuries/chopping & changing.

Sometimes I think you've got to just clear your lines, or take risks and show some invention. Especially in front of your own fans. Charlton game and the change of formation vs FGR shows we CAN up the pace/intensity .. I just wish we did it more. We're far too easily intimidated by these teams.
